To be fascinated by this creepy house mystery? (NZ)

MN! I need theories, this is doing my brain in!

I moved to a new neighbourhood in a largeish city (I'm in New Zealand fyi) recently, and was having an evening walk to stretch my legs when I came across the weirdest place. It was dark, so it might have looked a bit creepier than it was buuuuttt....

It was an oldish house, that was completely empty, and the curtains were up, nothing in it at all. The lawn was unmown and it looked vacant. No furniture.

BUT- all over the windows were pages and PAGEs of handwritten messages. Usually on A4, some were A3. All in adult cursive, pasted against ALL the windows - usually at the top, but some in the middle too. Easily 30-50 notes, going right to the bottom of the page in this scrawl. I couldn't read them because the lounge was lit up by a GIANT red LED alarm clock on the wall (think one of these) which had about 4 different times listed on it- the only thing in the house.

Obviously, I was freaked out by the empty house with all the red glowing and the strange written notes on all the windows, so I booked it home after that!

So then I went onto Google Maps (because I couldn't stop thinking about it!), and found something really weird- the house is censored out on Google Maps. There's just a blur on the space it should be. There's a house behind it that looks normal, and that was listed in Maps fine, but this house and its letterbox were censored. And I actually can't find any record of it anywhere- not in council valuations or plots, anything. It's weird. The plot shows up, but there's no number against the house or any proof there was a house there.

It's been driving me mad! I want to go for another walk to take a look, but I don't want to be a total creeper. I've been trying to think of what it could be....

Squatters maybe? Maybe someone is reclusive and doesn't like their details online? Is this some trend the young'uns are doing now? Something more sinister? Please, theories! (Mostly for fun! Grin

No clue but that is weird

PotterHead1985 · 03/11/2019 07:59

You need to go back for another look for us for science like Grin

Wherearemycrayons · 03/11/2019 07:59

Don’t they usually censor houses when someone’s been murdered?

FrankenCat · 03/11/2019 08:03

I wish you'd name changed and linked us to the google maps image! Talk about doing thing half arsed. GrinWink

TheTrollFairy · 03/11/2019 08:03

Just had a google online as to why and usually it’s because it’s a notable house (like home alone), others are because a famous person lives there and some are because horrible crimes we’re committed in the house.
Apparently it’s easy to get your house blurred by google maps if you wanted (although I would advise doing this)

Jayaywhynot · 03/11/2019 08:13

Go back and take some photos for us, this is too interesting Grin

mnahmnah · 03/11/2019 08:17

Have you googled the address, not in maps, to see if there are any news stories linked to it?

itsgettingweird · 03/11/2019 08:38

I didn't know google could blur houses.

I'm also interested as to what's going on. There's an empty property falling apart down the road from me. Nothing sinister afaik! I'm now going to search google maps!

CastleCrasher · 03/11/2019 09:01

You can ask Google to blur it your property for any reason, but they do it for houses that have a serious crime associated with it too. If you search the address, doors anything come up?

meg70 · 03/11/2019 09:07

Possibly occupied by person with schizophrenia. The paper in the windows and having it blurred on maps makes me think that (paranoia).

LampLighterInn · 03/11/2019 09:07

I was recently looking at houses on Rightmove and came across a blurred out censored house. I remember thinking at the time 'they must've contacted Google to ask to be removed'. Your strange house is a mystery, though, OP. Do see if you can take any photos Smile

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/11/2019 09:08

The person living there is mentally unstable and you will probably find that the messages on the windows are about how they are been followed by the police/FBI/government/milkman etc. They will have contacted google to get the house removed from street view. If they have owned the house for a long time or if they inherited it then there might not be any record of it having been bought or sold.

I had a neighbour like this, but she was in a rented flat. I lived on a corner and her flat was on the next street but her back garden was next to mine.
Her windows were right on the street and they were covered in hand written messages about how the ambulance men were out to get her and the only ones who were real were the ones from Essex. All other ambulance crew were fakes.
She would stand in the back garden and shout her theories for hours on end.

BettysLeftTentacle · 03/11/2019 09:15
  1. google the address.
  2. take another walk over there in daylight.
  3. take pictures and upload to MN so that we can have a proper look and advise think of much more specific crazy theories
SeaSidePebbles · 03/11/2019 09:15

Smacks me of mental health issues. Is NZ still pretty lax with gun ownership? Stay away. Next time you go to the post office or the corner shop, ask somebody. I’m sure someone would know something.

Macandcheeseplease · 03/11/2019 09:24

What's the surrounding neighbourhood like? If it's a bit hipster-ish maybe the house could be a weird art installation or something like that?

YouJustDoYou · 03/11/2019 09:30

Are you in aucklnd?

AnuvvaMuvva · 03/11/2019 09:31

Oh this is fascinating! I wonder if the clocks are counting down to something, like the end of the world...

MsJaneAusten · 03/11/2019 09:34

You HAVE to go back OP. In fact, we probably need to crowdfund for a group of us to be able to fly to NZ to support you.

HoppingPavlova · 03/11/2019 09:39

Possibly occupied by person with schizophrenia. The paper in the windows and having it blurred on maps makes me think that (paranoia).

That was my first thought. Usually some form of aluminium foil over windows but paper where they have written in a psychotic state would not be surprising.

FenellaVelour · 03/11/2019 09:49

Well I’m fascinated now too, and I’ve not even seen it.

Mammylamb · 03/11/2019 09:54

@meg70 that was my thoughts too

user1493423934 · 03/11/2019 10:03

What town In NZ are you?

hairyheadphones · 03/11/2019 10:08

Another theory, could it be being used as a film set?

Lj8893 · 03/11/2019 10:13

How fascinating! You need to go back OP!
