Refusal of a council house

TitcHt48 · 02/11/2019 11:42

The housing association refused us a house 🏡. We pay all our own rent/council tax never been in arrears. Want a house due to my health problems the main one insomnia. I "feel we are the butt of someone who works in the local office" to much to put on here but at our pension age they are treating us very unfairly. Anyone can anyone help please

You would have to meet the same eligibility criteria as anyone else. I'm not entirely sure whether insomnia would ever count as a relevent medical problem.

If you don't meet the criteria you won't get one, even people who do meet the criteria struggle to actually get offered properties.

Basketofkittens · 02/11/2019 11:46

I feel for you OP but there simply aren’t houses spare. I’m not sure what else the HA can do. Where I am, 12,000 families are on the waiting list for housing.

LIZS · 02/11/2019 11:48

Did you post the other day? If you are a couple you probably will only ever get a one bed, most of which are flats.

SmileCheese · 02/11/2019 11:49

You will be being assessed against the same criteria as everyone else so its not a personal vendetta.

If you don't meet the criteria which it doesn't sound like you do if you can afford to rent and that your main health complaint is insomnia then you wont get a house.

Try to remember there are thousands of people who do meet the criteria and who are struggling a heck of a lot more than you who are waiting to get a property.

Girlsmummy30 · 02/11/2019 11:51

I don't think insomnia counts as a health issue. And if it's a couple you should only be entitled to a flat or one bed. There are thousands of families who need houses with 3 or more bedrooms

MyDcAreMarvel · 02/11/2019 11:52

I don’t see the relevance of insomnia and a house? Or do you mean you want to bedrooms as you keep your partner awake? The answer to that is good quality sofa bed in the lounge the same as over crowded families have to do.
You aren’t priority sorry.

TitcHt48 · 02/11/2019 11:52

Aww thanks all for replying I also have several illnesses . Insomnia being just tip iceberg we live in a flat and I disturbed my hubby most nghts. Due to this we are on one level. I "try" not to disturb him . No worries it is just one of them things. Everyone take care

Is there more detail? Are you on the list or is it just a house you are not eligible for? What are you in now?

Oh and paying rent/CT should just be a given.

LoveNote · 02/11/2019 11:53

What are you in at the moment?

gamerchick · 02/11/2019 11:55

Why insomnia? Are you wanting more bedrooms that you're entitled? Just got a good sofa bed and put it in the lounge.

codenameduchess · 02/11/2019 11:56

I assume you have been added to a waiting list rather than refused. If insomnia is your main health complaint that is not something that would increase your eligibility.

As PPs have said there are thousands of families, couples and individuals waiting for housing, many is desperate situations, but there are not enough properties for all of them and many will wait years.

As a couple without disabilities you would be looking at a 1 bed flat, some HAs have hard to let properties (usually flats or smaller properties in less desirable locations) you may stand a better chance of getting if you are willing but you would be better off looking at private renting if you don't want to wait.

MyRaGaiaStarFishPieA · 02/11/2019 11:56

With my council you are only eligible for a house if you have children under 16. Otherwise it's a house or maisonette. And that's the way it should be!

raspberryk · 02/11/2019 11:57

If you're paying your own private rent they won't see you as in need, you're housed and managing fine.

They wouldn't help me as a single parent on unpaid maternity with 2 kids struggling to find a private rent when my marriage broke down as I had deposit money. Despite no landlords accepting housing benefit/any benefits as a means to pay the monthly rent and not having enough income to pay the rent. They said if I sold my house which I couldn't afford the mortgage on before the bank took it away I was making myself intentionally homeless.

So if they wouldn't help me, why would they help you?

LoveNote · 02/11/2019 11:58

Op are you saying you are already adequately housed?

You can private rent?

Fishcakey · 02/11/2019 11:59

You will still have to bid, medical issues or not, you won't just get one given to you. That's not how it works these days. As a single mum in unheated accommodation I waited two years to get to the top of the list years ago and I think it's even harder nowadays.

HowlinProwlin · 02/11/2019 12:01

Hang on, in your first post, your main issue is insomnia, in your second post it's only the tip of the iceberg suggesting other health issues are more serious.

Make your mind up?

If your home is unsuitable due to your health you need to speak to your GP and arrange a visit from OT who will assess your home and see if it meets your needs.

If it does NOT then.. changes can be made including moving you to a more suitable property.

Don't hold your breath though, I can't always get up my own stairs to the toilet and my bathroom isn't accessible when I do and I've been waiting 3 years for a stair lift and an accessible bathroom.

TitcHt48 · 02/11/2019 12:01

I am sorry for youraspberryk I hope you get sorted soon good luck

PumpkinP · 02/11/2019 12:03

Same in my council only people with a child under 16 are given houses. FLats for everyone else. Not quite clear on why you think you should be given a house though?

rainbowconfetti · 02/11/2019 12:06

What council? I always understood that when you applied for a council house you were placed on a waiting list. I mean you can be on it for 20 years because there will always be people who have priority for various reasons, but a point blank no is something I have never heard of. Maybe contact your local MP

Sunsoottitsoot · 02/11/2019 12:06

Given the lack of housing stock, it's about needs not wants.

SmileCheese · 02/11/2019 12:12

letters from several medical people been submitted still no joy.

I'm not sure why a doctor would write a supporting letter if your main issue is insomnia. I could understand it if it was for mobility reasons e.g. you were in a wheelchair in a third floor flat with no lift but not for insomnia.

Have you tried sleeping separately one of you in the bedroom and the other in the living room? Surely this would be a more realistic solution?

user1471449295 · 02/11/2019 12:14

OP I think you need to read you local housing allocation policy and fully understand the eligibility criteria. The information you have provided does not automatically mean you have a housing need. Authorities house people with a housing need only.
Paying your rent and council tax and suffering from insomnia is not going to meet eligibility criteria, nor give you a right to a property.
There are 1000’s and 1000’s of people awaiting a property, often due to homelessness, disability which is negatively affected by current housing, or fleeing life threatening dangerous situations. These are priorities.

You say the main issue is insomnia, then you go on to say it’s the tip of the iceberg.

If you suffer insomnia and pay your rent, think yourself lucky compared to many people waiting years and years for a property. There isn’t enough housing.

KitKat1985 · 02/11/2019 12:14

So you have a flat already? Then (unless you've left out some massive details) you are adequately housed. Sorry but the demand for council houses is huge, with some waiting lists several years long. You would need severe medical needs or similar to need a change in accommodation.

Theresnobslikeshowbs · 02/11/2019 12:18

You’ve just said- you can pay your own rent and council tax.
Social housing is for those that can’t afford that. So need cheaper housing (though it isn’t cheaper by much). You will only be entitled to one bed- there simply is not enough homes to go around, hence you have 5 children and two adults in a two bed, they aren’t going to give two adults a two bed over that- can you not see the issues?
