WIBU to ask cleaner to use new snazzy vac & mop?

First World Problem Klaxon

A few weeks ago I bought a steam mop and vacuum combined. It's quite nice, as these things go.

I've noticed that my cleaner does not use it, however. I would like her to, as I think it's a bit more hygienic than our old manual mop, plus as the floors only need going over once as opposed to twice with separate hoover and mop, it would save her time and thus potentially increase the amount she can do.

I hoover a few times a week, so it's not as if they need significant dust and crumb removal on cleaning day, so vac and mop should be fine!

Should I ask her to use it, or should I respect her professionalism and her choice to be able to use which ever implement she sees fit?

Sadly, it's not a case of having a quick chat; she only speaks Polish, meaning that I have to get DH to communicate with her and he isn't hugely interested in the floors so I'd have to explain to him first, meaning the information is third hand!

I know there truly are more important things in the world, but I'd be interested in your opinions.

I love my steam mop and my Shark vac, but my cleaner doesn't. She feels the floor is not really clean unless she has washed it with a mop and bucket and she prefers to vac with a really heavy Vax. She has also told me she is worried about breaking expensive equipment. I just go along with her because I don't want to micromanage.

BillHadersNewWife · 01/11/2019 09:52

YABU. That's like hiring a plumber and insisting he uses your wrench...because you prefer to use it yourself.

Psychologika · 01/11/2019 11:33

@BillHadersNewWife well not quite; she's not bringing her own, preferred equipment. She's using a (very past it's best) mop that is in my kitchen. I don't really want to replace it as it's yet more plastic that doesn't need to be used

Hide the old mop and leave your fancy pants steam mop in its place?

Greatorb · 01/11/2019 11:58

Does she actually know how to use it, and does she know that she's allowed to use it?

Psychologika · 01/11/2019 12:31

Both good points!

Teach her how to use it. She probably doesn't know.

Jesuisclaude · 01/11/2019 12:33

Can I just chime in and ask what is this miraculous machine?????? Is it really good?

gamerchick · 01/11/2019 12:34

I wouldn't because breaking a customer's stuff can get awkward. Nothing stopping you giving it a steam afterwards.. as it's so quick.

@gamerchick but that would be besides the point - I want her to use it so she doesn't do the floor twice, meaning she can fit more into the time she's with us. Additionally, if I then steamed it, the same bit of floor will have been gone over three times, which is bonkers when I have a machine that will do it in one pass

Psychologika · 01/11/2019 12:45

@gamerchick but I take your point about being worried about breaking someone's stuff

If you already vacuum a couple of times a week why don't you use the mop thing to do that and ask the cleaner to leave the floors completely and do other stuff.

TheFlis12345 · 01/11/2019 12:53

I used to hide our cordless vacuum when the cleaner came round as I wanted her to use the more powerful corded one for a thorough clean. I would advise checking she knows how to use the steam mop then doing the same!

Chunkers · 01/11/2019 12:55

The instructions probably came in Polish too, might be easier to give her these than try to explain?

Dino44 · 01/11/2019 13:01

This machine looks great. What sort of floor do you have? We have high shine times (not my choice) which are a nightmare to keep clean/streak free and wondering if this might do the trick! I currently have to hoover, mop then buff over quite a large area so an annoying chore

Psychologika · 01/11/2019 13:07

@Dino44 these are the three types of floor I. My flat!

@Itsallpetetong yeah, I could, but I want her to use the steam mop. I don't want to buy additional stuff!
