Interesting to see that they decided against bringing in the Mueller findings.

I was listening to an interview with Neil Katyal today and he was more optimistic about the Senate than others have been.

Hmm Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived at the White House. He pulled up in a car with State Department plates, and entered through the front door of the West Wing.

An hour later, he left.

Yep.

If Putin, the former head of the KGB, wanted to use that background to make a very public statement to the world on his hold over the US, what better way then to send his envoy to a closed door meeting in the WH, amid impeachment over the leader of Ukraine being denied the same.

I'm getting flashbacks to that scene in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, where they panic Gerald the Mole into calling a crash meeting with his handler and he demands Karla gets him out.Grin

YouretheChristmasCarcass · 10/12/2019 23:47

My DH said he has heard the same thing about the Senate lion. I'm not so sanguine.

TheClaws · 11/12/2019 00:28

If you’d like the read the articles of impeachment for yourself, here they are:

NPR Politics @NPRPolitics 4mins

House Democrats announced they will bring two articles of impeachment against President Trump: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Read those articles:

lionheart · 11/12/2019 00:41

The way the Republicans have acted so far doesn't give much cause for hope, that's for sure.

TheClaws · 11/12/2019 00:55

No, lion. There would need to be an incredible revelation (or many) in the Senate hearings for that to occur. Do you think he is paying them off? Or has kompromat on some of them? I simply can’t find any other reason for their overly-partisan behaviour for this treasonous oaf.

lionheart · 11/12/2019 01:03

Yes, I do. Graham for starters.

But some will do whatever they think they need to do to get re-elected.

lionheart · 11/12/2019 01:09

But the trial will demand that they argue the case on substance rather than bleating about conspiracies etc.

From what I remember Katyal said it is possible that some names that have not yet featured under oath might make an impact (Pompeo, for example).

YouretheChristmasCarcass · 11/12/2019 01:37

I think that those banking on senators actually voting to remove from office are thinking of those GOP senators who are not running for reelection in 2020 (or who expect to retire in a few years at the end of their term). But there are aren't enough of those to change a party line vote in the Senate. They need 22 senators to 'cross the aisle' for the needed 67 majority and I just don't see that happening.

There are 19 GOP House Reps retiring, but we already have the numbers to impeach even if the vote went along straight party lines (which I think it will).

Claws I think it's a combination of Kompromat, promise of 'favours', and pandering to their Trumpkin constituents to stay in office. No one in their right mind would actually believe the shit that comes out of Scrotus' mouth or approve of his actions.

TheClaws · 11/12/2019 05:19

What a sorry excuse of a political party the GOP has become. Sadly, it’s most manic supporters don’t see it, but instead repeat the party line of ‘Democrats are evil’, ‘Libs hate the US’, etc. The White House twitter feed is nothing more than GOP/Trump propaganda promoting this same Democrat spite.

Sergey Lavrov held a press conference with Sec. Pompeo at the WH today. He stated that Russia didn’t interfere with the 2016 election. (Despite all evidence to the contrary, refuting US intelligence agencies and the Mueller Report, and decrying knowledge of 12 Russian intelligence officers that have been charged so far).

Aaron Rupar @atrupar 6hr

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: "We have highlighted once again that all speculation about our alleged interference in domestic processes in the US are baseless. There are no facts that would support that ...no one has given us this proof because it simply does not exist"

TheClaws · 11/12/2019 07:12

At his rally today, he went where no POTUS has gone before - he called FBI investigators “scum”.

MSNBC @MSNBC 4hr

At rally in Pennsylvania, Trump repeats disproven claim that his campaign was spied upon, then called FBI investigators "scum."

I've lost track with this... basically because of being embroiled in UK GE shitshow, whatever happens thank fuck there is an end to campaigning tonight. I'm not optimistic, I think it will probably be a Tory win (FFS) or at best a hung parlt. Please cheer me up and tell me that this is the beginning of the end for the orange one?

YouretheChristmasCarcass · 11/12/2019 19:30

Your election is tomorrow and it's not a referendum, it's to elect MPs, right?

And the importance of it is that it could 'swing' control of Parliament from the right (Tories/Conservatives) to the left (Labour/Lib Dem) which in turn will affect how Brexit is being handled. If it does, could the new majority party call for another referendum vote? Could they decide to just 'table' Brexit and pretend it doesn't exist?

Sorry, I try to keep up since our UK posters keep up with all the goings-on here.

YouretheChristmasCarcass · 11/12/2019 19:33

yolo Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but 'general wisdom' is that there is no way they'll get enough votes in the Senate to remove him from office. He will be impeached, but not removed.

What happens after that is anyone's guess. I feel it will embolden him even further as he'll regard it as a 'victory', that he's 'won'. And 'winning' is all he cares about.

As far as the effect of an impeachment on his 're-electability', I have not a clue.

PerkingFaintly · 11/12/2019 21:10

Bang on, Carcase.

Although if Labour do get in, and call another referendum, it won't be Generic Leave vs Remain, but This Specific Leave Deal vs Remain (and third option?).

There's a strong possibility of a hung parliament, and then it will come down to which party or coalition can form a government.
