To ask for help with my Cornwall holiday

notsosummerwinterholiday · 31/10/2019 17:02

IABU for having to ask for help I know, but with our new DD, we have completely neglected our Cornwall holiday which we depart on Saturday for.

So! We have a cottage in St Agnes, a 3 month old and a car and will be there for a week (Saturday to Saturday). Our air bnb host has given some lovely recommendations for the local area, but what else is in Cornwall that we must not miss? We're fairly mobile with DD, though not big hikers but happy for a bimble if there's a nice view somewhere.

We plan on heading to Padstow for some food one day, and imagine most of our main meals to be lunch/late lunch out and then back at the cottage for the evenings (wood burner, cheese and red wine). Any lovely food recommendations ANYWHERE in Cornwall? Food shops with local treats? Things we must see? Places we must go? We will wing it and research a bit more when we get there but always love to hear people's recommendations.

Sadly the weather looks a bit crap but that won't stop up heading out!

Definitely head for St Ives, beautiful place.

GrapefruitGin · 31/10/2019 17:12

In Padstow, you MUST head to rick steins for fish and chips!

FuzzyPuffling · 31/10/2019 17:14

Head north, not where the majority of tourists go.

I recommend the Port William Inn at Trebarwith Strand. Pub right above the beach, child friendly, decent food and if it rains you can sit and admire the view through the big windows.

SurferRona · 31/10/2019 17:17

Scarlet hotel! Second St Ives, also Falmouth, Marazion and St Michaels Mount walk. Gurnards head a nice pub and food in a beautifully bleakish setting. Smile

The Minnak theatre is worth visiting. Check it's open though! There won't be a play on, but it's still worth going to.
Eden Project (plenty indoors there if the weather's not so good)
Nice beaches (and cafe - theunicornonthebeach.com) round Porthtowan
There are a few Nat Trust houses around - can't go wrong with those.

15 - Jamie Oliver's restaurant just outside Newquay is perfect for a nice lunch, and a stroll along the beach afterwards. There are lovely beaches around Newquay too.

I'm a huge fan of Tintagel and Boscastle.

Bodmin Moor with a stop at Jamaica Inn (never been, but heard good things)

You'll have no trouble filling a week - especially if you don't mind being out in all weathers.

ReviewingTheSituation · 31/10/2019 17:25

And if you're buying cheese to eat at home, make sure you get some Cornish Yarg. It's wrapped in nettles, which are delicious.

ReviewingTheSituation · 31/10/2019 17:27

Final tip... If your journey there takes you down the M5, you MUST stop at Gloucester services. The farm shop is amazing. You can pick up all sorts of tasty treats for your cottage.

Brakebackcyclebot · 31/10/2019 17:28

Another vote for Tintagel - it's magic there. And Boscastle.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 31/10/2019 17:29

We go to Perranporth every year, love it.

Beveren · 31/10/2019 17:33

For Saint Ives, it's a good idea to park at St Erth and take the train to St Ives. It goes down the coast and the views are beautiful. You can easily plan to spend a day there, there's a lot to do even in winter.

Mousehole is lovely. I'd avoid Padstow and rock though.

Love st mawes, bit of a drive though

OvertiredandConfused · 31/10/2019 17:41

Landhydrock is a fab National Trust place near Bodmin.

Mariners pub in Rock is good, as is Rojanos in the Square in Padstow. Bin Two is a little wine bar in Padstow good for picking up a local bottle or two. If you go to Truro, there is a great Cornish food shop attached to the out of town Waitrose.

Eden Project is definitely worth a trip, as are the Lost Gardens of
Heligan. Both have great places to eat too.

FionaCorkesWardrobebyKamizole · 31/10/2019 18:03

Bring an Ark, it's been chucking it down here all week (apart from this morning). In St Agnes itself, you must try the Driftwood Spars for a meal or drink. If you are staying next week, you'll be here for their big fireworks display on Tuesday night at the drifty. It might be too noisy for your 3 month old but hopefully you will be able to see the display from your cottage or from a bit further away. The main road will be closed though down from the village to the pub that afternoon/evening so bear this in mind if your cottage is nearer the cove than the village.

A walk up over the cliffs from St Agnes towards Chapel Porth is amazing if you have the weather for it (and a good sling for DD, not buggy friendly at all). Otherwise a walk around the cove is always good whatever the weather.

The St Agnes Hotel up in the village used to do great food & is apparently reopening this weekend as well, might be worth checking it out. The bakery in the village does fab pasties for lunchtimes too.

There are loads of NT places nearby, my favourites are the gardens at Trelissick and also Trebah.

notsosummerwinterholiday · 31/10/2019 18:13

Oh thank you all so much! I cant tag you all so if you see my post thank you!

Yes we will be headed to Padstow for Rick Steins fish and chips - he has a couple of restaurants, is there a standard fish n chip shop that is still delicious?

I had forgotten about the Eden Project, that's an excellent one. Are there any other indoor activities I'm not thinking of? I will look at National trust houses also. The Lost Gardens sounds wonderful!

Thank you for the tip on St Ives and the train, honestly things like that can make such a difference. I will look into Tintagel and Trebarwith also.

I'm worried a week isn't enough!!!! We are definitely able to go out in the rain (have wellies and waterproof jackets) so it won't stop us too much unless it's exceptionally heavy - but then DD can go in a sling and a waterproof cover with a brolly if it's a town.

I will be buying cheese to eat in the car, the cottage, on the motorway and at home. I'm most excited about local food and produce - the wine shop sounds excellent. We went the Bakewell earlier this year and I had just the nicest food time with the Bakewell tarts 😁I will be driving from the M4 and then down so I will look at the service station definitely!

@FionaCorkesWardrobebyKamizole that is a very helpful tip about the roads as we'll be conscious of that when out. Maybe on Tuesday we'll stay local for the day and walk places. With 2 dogs in tow we will be staying in for fireworks night (always do). They're small old dogs and sleep most of the day and aren't bothered by them at all, but we've always stayed in for fireworks night and will do so this year also.

St Michaels Mount is amazing and NT.
Perranporth has the best beach and the Tywarnhayle pub is lovely.
Eden is great really interesting.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 31/10/2019 18:18

Yes, both Eden and heligan are two of my favourite places ever

Whatthefoxgoingon · 31/10/2019 18:23

You’ll need a timed ticket for the new Tintagel Bridge. It won’t be so busy now, so shouldn’t be a problem. It’s lovely there (though many steps!)

reefedsail · 31/10/2019 18:29

I'd say:

St Ives- buy some Cornish gin and potter the local shops
Marazion & St Michael's Mount- boat ride and look round the house
Tintagel & Boscastle- castle at TT and potter in B

Fcukthisshit · 31/10/2019 18:31

If you go to the lost gardens of heligan, try and stop off at mevagissey for a walk round. It’s a really lovely little place! Tea on the quay do amazing cream teas!

isseywith4vampirecats · 31/10/2019 18:32

and look out for philps cornish pasties they are the best pasties ever my OH orders them online to go in the freezer

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/10/2019 18:36

Cotehele - both the Tudor house and the Quay down in the deep Tamar valley.

Lifesagreatbalancingact · 31/10/2019 18:44

Another vote for Falmouth - bustling student town so lots to do all year round. Lots of restaurants on the high st that are worth a visit. Get chips from Gylly beach cafe and wander along the coast path to swanpool. Lanhydrock has been mentioned already also but take a picnic and eat it in the gardens. Charlestown near St Austell is a favourite of mine. Gorgeous georgian harbour where they filmed Poldark. Eat at either the Boathouse or the Longstore (get the sweet potato wedges). You can walk from here to Carlyon Bay, it is fairly flat and takes half an hour or so.

fairydustandpixies · 31/10/2019 18:52

Tintagel, Boscastle, Eden Project.
Enough said!
