To ask for help with my Cornwall holiday

IABU for having to ask for help I know, but with our new DD, we have completely neglected our Cornwall holiday which we depart on Saturday for.

So! We have a cottage in St Agnes, a 3 month old and a car and will be there for a week (Saturday to Saturday). Our air bnb host has given some lovely recommendations for the local area, but what else is in Cornwall that we must not miss? We're fairly mobile with DD, though not big hikers but happy for a bimble if there's a nice view somewhere.

We plan on heading to Padstow for some food one day, and imagine most of our main meals to be lunch/late lunch out and then back at the cottage for the evenings (wood burner, cheese and red wine). Any lovely food recommendations ANYWHERE in Cornwall? Food shops with local treats? Things we must see? Places we must go? We will wing it and research a bit more when we get there but always love to hear people's recommendations.

Sadly the weather looks a bit crap but that won't stop up heading out!

Heligan is lovely and very dog friendly. Lanhydrock is also fantastic.

Another vote for Heligan. I like sitting in the bird hide when the weather’s crap (mercifully warm and dry at this time of year) and watching the birds on the feeders. The cafe is decent and Lobbs farm shop in the car park sells some great local produce. I used to think it was expensive until I stopped at Gloucester services earlier this year (Shock).

You don’t have to cycle the Camel Trail from Wadebridge to Padstow. You can walk it & it’s paved so you could put your baby in her buggy. You would have to keep your dogs on the lead though, as people cycle quite fast along the trail and its not that wide in places. It’s 5 miles each way. Wadebridge has a fabulous retro independent cinema - we saw Ready Player One there and it was the perfect setting, just like going to the cinemas I remember from the 80s (but with modern sound/display equipment).

Falmouth is good for a wet day. The Maritime Museum is good and there’s a decent selection of places to eat and shops to mooch in.

Another unsung gem is the Cornwall County Museum in Truro, which has a great art supplies shop and cafe attached.

I now want to be in Cornwall!

TwattingDog · 01/11/2019 22:20

We're due a good storm tonight and tomorrow, so make sure you take that in to account! Lots of events this weekend have already been cancelled.

IScreamForIceCreams · 02/11/2019 08:26

@transformandriseup wahahaha Camborne!! Drinks in Tyacks it is then! Followed by some pints in Wetherspoons? Please tell me you're in Camborne! We should have a coffee in Camborne's finest next time I'm over ;-)))

transformandriseup · 02/11/2019 09:35

@IScreamForIceCreams I'm down near St Ives now but still go there often. I lived there for seven years and still have a flat there. It's a great town. I do Weatherspoons before Tyacks (only because I can't drink on an empty stomach).

Writersblock2 · 02/11/2019 09:37

My favourite place in Cornwall is the Witchcraft Museum at Boscastle.

Disclaimer: I live in Cornwall.

IScreamForIceCreams · 02/11/2019 10:00

@transformandriseup my inlaws live and had a business in Camborne for many years- we still have many old friends there and extended family. DH spent all of his youth riding bikes to Gwithian. Best beach.

TheABC · 02/11/2019 10:05

You've had some great advice and recommendations on this thread already!

Don't forget to allow a lazy morning at the cottage. With a three-month-old to look after, you bloody deserve it.

Pantalaimon88 · 02/11/2019 10:07

I second Landhydrock, best national trust place in the SW.

YouDoYou18 · 02/11/2019 11:14

I adore almost every part of Cornwall but my top faves are;

St Michaels Mount
Trebah Gardens
Pendennis Castle
Healys Cornish Cyder Farm
Cornish Gold!

Have a great time, it’s my favourite place in the whole country Smile

MoaningMinniee · 02/11/2019 11:31

Philps for pasties. They're based in Hayle but I think they have some other shops too.

Rick Stein's takeaway fish and chips are overpriced.

For Eden Project be prepared to strip down to tropical level layers when you go in the big dome. At the top it's steaming hot! It is amazing though.

TwattingDog · 02/11/2019 19:48

Philps are the ONLY pasty anyone should eat. Fact. Grin

They are in Hayle, but also Marazion and they used to have a small outlet in St Ives - not sure if it's still there.

IScreamForIceCreams · 03/11/2019 07:55

Another vote for Philps! Buy it from Hayle shop and eat on Hayle beach. And free parking along the harbour bit.

Smoothyloopy · 03/11/2019 08:54

Actually Rows pasties are superior to Philps, more pepper,

BikeRunSki · 03/11/2019 09:03

I’m currently in Cornwall and we went to Cotehele yesterday. There us currently very little to see if the house, as the upstairs is closed for winter, and much if the downstairs is covered in dust sheets and scaffold in prep for Christmas. There was a craft fair on in most of the rooms which were open. However, the quayside, mill and grounds are well worth an explore, and the pasties in the barn cafe were delicious.

TwattingDog · 03/11/2019 11:47

Christ no, Roses pasties are awful - the pastry is dreadful. Grin

FuzzyPuffling · 03/11/2019 18:48

I like Polmorla pasties. (I eat cheese and onion pasties and they do good ones)

Londonmummy66 · 03/11/2019 18:59

Bedruthen Steps Hotel has a nice spa where you can book the little one into their childcare and have a treatment and then lunch or dinner in their baby friendly restaurant

notsosummerwinterholiday · 03/11/2019 21:01

Many thanks to all! Sorry I hadn't been back.

Drive down was fine, no bother at all! We spent today hanging out and resting up, it took 6 hours to get her by time we stopped for DD twice. Tomorrow we're going to Falmouth, then Tuesday we will stay in St Agnes for the afternoon. We may head for a walk but as others have said, it's not the best weather for costal walks and the winds look horrific so we won't be risking it if it looks awful. The rest of this week we have St Ives, the Eden project and maybe Padstow. Tintagel looks amazing but again, weather. Between DD and the dogs we have enough on our list to do an outing a day - happy enough to be back by 4ish in front of the wood burner and a film. We aren't going to do it all in this short week so will just have to come back in the summer!

National maritime museum in Falmouth- great for kids, and Seal Sanctuary in Gweek. Falmouth also has Pendennis Castle. Lands end ? And the aquarium at Newquay is also good for a rainy day.

notsosummerwinterholiday · 03/11/2019 21:26

Oh and last nights dinner was fab - pizza from the pizza place in st Agnes, did not disappoint!!

transformandriseup · 03/11/2019 21:34

If you're not going far on Tuesday the Blue Bar at Porthtowan is open throughout winter now but closes at 5pm.
