To ask for help with my Cornwall holiday

IABU for having to ask for help I know, but with our new DD, we have completely neglected our Cornwall holiday which we depart on Saturday for.

So! We have a cottage in St Agnes, a 3 month old and a car and will be there for a week (Saturday to Saturday). Our air bnb host has given some lovely recommendations for the local area, but what else is in Cornwall that we must not miss? We're fairly mobile with DD, though not big hikers but happy for a bimble if there's a nice view somewhere.

We plan on heading to Padstow for some food one day, and imagine most of our main meals to be lunch/late lunch out and then back at the cottage for the evenings (wood burner, cheese and red wine). Any lovely food recommendations ANYWHERE in Cornwall? Food shops with local treats? Things we must see? Places we must go? We will wing it and research a bit more when we get there but always love to hear people's recommendations.

Sadly the weather looks a bit crap but that won't stop up heading out!

Healeys Cyder Farm is about 10-15 minutes from St Agnes. Good place to visit if the weather is dire. You can go on a tour around the distillery, and there's also a cafe and shop.

reefedsail · 01/11/2019 16:25

We were quite disappointed by the Cyder farm. I love Rattler and thought I'd drop in and pick up a bargain crate to last me the week. It was more expensive than in my non-Cornish Sainsbury's.

Cyder outlet it is not!!

4cats2kids · 01/11/2019 16:28

Prepare for indoor stuff, it’s been pouring with rain all day all week down here!

Rowgtfc72 · 01/11/2019 17:20

We had our honeymoon day at Healeys, we got married in St Austell while staying at Pentewan sands.Grin
Llanhydrock is brilliant, as is Glendurgan gardens. It has lovely maze.
Minack well worth a look but is steep and a bit unfriendly in bad weather.
National maritime museum in falmouth is worth a look on a wet day.
Boscastle is very pretty and the food in The Riverside very good. We did Tintagel but stayed by the beach for Merlins cave.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2019 18:03

Get your Rattler in the supermarket not in a tourist outlet!

Rowgtfc72 · 01/11/2019 19:15

Bulk buy from bargain boozeGrin

Come to Wadebridge! If your going to Padstow then it's only 20 minutes further on. We've got a fab little high street, with one of the highest levels of independent shops in the country. Bar fish and chips, mentioned above, we've got great pubs - The Bear Bar is good, and I think there is one in St Agnes too. If the weather is ok, you could cycle along the Camel Trail, a disused railway line closed by Beeching in the 60s, which follows the river from Padstow. Bikes, with kiddy seats can be hired at either Padstow or Wadebridge.

longearedbat · 01/11/2019 19:40

Yes, some of these places suggested are bloody miles apart!
There is a fairly new brewery near Tintagel that is well worth a visit if you are beer lovers. Also, just outside (above) Boscastle is a lovely farm shop with an excellent restaurant and views.
St Nectans Glen is just a tourist trap. If you like trees covered in plastic tat and 'mementoes', fill your boots. Plus the parking is downright dangerous at times.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2019 19:43

Yes to Boscastle Farm Shop. Their Homity Pie is fabulous. As are their puddings.

user1480880826 · 01/11/2019 19:49

Cornwall is big and the roads are extremely slow. Without knowing where you’re staying it’s he’s to advise but you have received suggestions for places that are over an hour apart. I really would try to limit how much time you spend driving since it’s meant to be a holiday.

demelza82 · 01/11/2019 19:49

Padstow is massively overrated. St Ives all the way.

I am never less than amused by the fact that Padstow was rough as fuck.when I grew up near .there in the 90s

demelza82 · 01/11/2019 19:50

Also Wadebridge is a big fat waste of time, the poster above must be smoking something.....

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2019 20:04

I like Wadebridge. For me, St Ives is the overrated place (because it is so crowded). Good job we don't all like the same thing.

Littlebelina · 01/11/2019 20:06

Another vote for the Rum and Crab shack in st Ives. Also Eden project, megavissey, Fowey and Marazion. Quite jealous of you been able to do Cornwall in term time, DS is school age so haven't braved it in school hols yet.

Don't go to Cornish market world!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/11/2019 20:07

The A30 is a marvellous road. Very fast and direct. However as soon as you get off things slow down.

Lost gardens are probably better in the spring, we went last week and it’s good, but not amazing. Loads of walking. Tea rooms at the halfway stop. Better in the spring.

Lanhydrock was ok, parking is miles from house so make sure you have everything you need.

Avoid Jamaica Inn, it’s a coach park and tourist trap.

Beaches are amazing.

demelza82 · 01/11/2019 20:17

Clearly never been in Wadebridge when the amateur cyclists are around then . Love how defensive the Bridgers get in spite of a wealth of evidence to the opposite . Lol

NearlyGranny · 01/11/2019 20:19

Trerice (NT) is a pocket Elizabethan Manor house near Newquay, but only open on weekends now it's November. Mevagissey has lots of interesting little independent shops, including a soap shop, and Liz Hurley's bookshop which is a treasure trove.

The Blue Peter Inn at Polperro is rather special, too.

demelza82 · 01/11/2019 20:22

OP - if you do do beautiful, cultured, plenty of things to see and do place that is St Ives - I strongly recommend you do the park and ride. The only negative thing about it is the cars that go through the narrow streets. Despite that it's totally worth it on many levels

BarrenFieldofFucks · 01/11/2019 20:23

Avoid Newquay. Rough.b

crosstalk · 01/11/2019 20:35

Another one saying Rick Stein's fish and chips is overpriced and disappointing. However there if open is the lovely Prideaux Place at the top of Padstow.

summersun0191 · 01/11/2019 20:38

We stayed in Bude in the summer. Visited Boscastle, Tintagel, Bodmin, Jamaica Inn. All of which were brilliant but it depends what your interests are.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2019 20:43

demelza82 I don't live in Wadebridge. I still like it, cyclists notwithstanding!

Dominoz · 01/11/2019 20:51

We stay in St Agnes most years. Love it there! Agree that the pizza place is great If YOU fancy a night in. The Taphouse does good food. I like the Pentonville Arms too. Genki cafe is great and it's on the walk to the beach. Good for breakfast. On the way to the beach is a fantastic silver jewellery shop too, he makes it all on site. The old post office coffee shop in the village for good cake! Healeys Cyder Farm is definitely worth a visit and I think your little one might like the Seal Sanctuary. My 10 month old did but he was a bit older.

Dominoz · 01/11/2019 20:52

Haha, not sure why the caps on you 😁

transformandriseup · 01/11/2019 21:17

Wadebridge? Camborne is where it's at!!

On a serious note, the road to St Ives can get very busy even at this time of year and you may want to head straight for the park and ride as it's often impossible to find a parking space. Or you could take the train from St Erth.
