I can't ever imagine being so financially well off that...

... I would pay £49 for a toddler puddle suit from Mountain Warehouse when I could buy a second hand MW one on eBay or fb for £3.

There's a few of these like this.

Same goes for buying things such as Bumbos brand new. Jumperoos or vtech walkers.

Who actually buys these brand new when they can constantly be found for a fraction of the price in immaculate condition elsewhere.

Dimblebimble · 30/10/2019 19:45

Well, if no one ever buys them new there will never be any second hand ones to buy...

Drizzzle · 30/10/2019 19:45

Well, someone needs to buy them new or there wouldn't be any second hand ones around ;)

honeylulu · 30/10/2019 19:46

Precious people who will only buy brand new/ the best for their little darlings.

araiwa · 30/10/2019 19:46

Then you must have a very limited imagination

CallMeOnMyCell · 30/10/2019 19:46

YABU, if you buy something new, you can return it if doesn’t fit or is poor quality.

Waiting1987 · 30/10/2019 19:47

I like having new things and don't see what is wrong with that. It meant everything was in fairly good condition still for baby 2. Equally I couldn't care less if people buy second hand. Each to their own!

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 30/10/2019 19:48

I have a family member with this logic and I had to point out that it's people (like me) who buy new things and replace BEFORE its completely worn out that allows her to buy second hand bargains.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 30/10/2019 19:48

I bought some stuff new as I didn't have the time or inclination to trawl charity shops looking for things. I don't do ebay and buying stuff off fb always seems to involve going to some random place with no parking and no doorbell! I like my amazon delivery.

Celebelly · 30/10/2019 19:49

I've bought some things second-hand but I have bought DD some nice clothes that might be deemed more expensive than necessary. But I can afford it and it gives me pleasure 🤷‍♀️ We aren't rich but now I have her I don't spend as much money on some stuff I used to do pre-baby and I like to spend it on her. £49 if it's something that will be used frequently isn't too horrendous if you can get six months of winter out of it and then re-use it for another DC or just sell it on, IMO.

instanaan · 30/10/2019 19:49

YABU. Sometimes you need something asap and they aren't readily available second hand in the size/colour you want. Some people feel weird getting second hand stuff due to germs/chemicals/pets/whatever. Some people just buy everything new because they can and some people get pretty much everything second hand so are happy to spend some cash on a few items as they've had freebies for everything else. Loads of reasons why you'd buy new.

Ragwort · 30/10/2019 19:50

Loads of people won’t buy second hand, even if they struggle to afford ‘new’ prices. I don’t know why, I think it’s a combination of believing they will look like cheapskates if they buy second hand, for some reason genuinely think ‘new’ is best, want to be seen buying designer labels etc etc.

I manage a charity shop, we frequently have the most amazing donations (often unused)
but particularly with children's items we really struggle to sell them, at very cheap prices. We receive brand new school uniform from a high street retailer, all in immaculate condition with tags on, I can’t even sell them for £1 each yet everyone moans at the cost of uniform Confused.

TulipCat · 30/10/2019 19:50

I buy new for my first child, hand down to subsequent ones, then sell on in used condition. That way I get to have new things but recoup much of their cost when I'm finished with it.

Celebelly · 30/10/2019 19:51

Also partly convenience. I don't want to spend time trawling FB groups or driving about to pick stuff up/trying to arrange things with flaky FB sellers unless it's the bargain of the century. I'm generally happy to pay more for convenience of being able to go online and choose exactly what I want and have it delivered to my door.

Elmer2028 · 30/10/2019 19:51

I'm with you! I raise my DC on secondhand!

goodtoseeyou · 30/10/2019 19:52

I buy a mix of new and used but YABU to be so judgemental about how people spend their own money.

Elmer2028 · 30/10/2019 19:52

Also the thrill of the bargain is far more fun than spending a fortune in my experience

SoyDora · 30/10/2019 19:53

I bought new for DC1. DC3 is now using it all and as he grows out of it all I’m selling it on, recouping a lot of the cost. Not sure why that’s so insane? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Grandparents

Thecazelets · 30/10/2019 19:54

I was cash rich (relatively) and time poor when dc were small (working ft) so no time to hunt for second hand bargains. Plenty of people in similar positions.

Northhome · 30/10/2019 19:56

I tend to buy new things. Nothing against second hand, but I find people often want way too much for some second hand stuff, for example certain sought after toys, people want nearly as much as they cost new.

I tend to buy things when they're on an offer, so again this tends to even out with second hand.

I like the security of being able to return something if it breaks or is faulty.

I haven't always got time to trawl the Internet for a second hand bargain, that's local, that I can get to.

SerafinaPekkalasbroomstick · 30/10/2019 19:56

Totally happy to get second hand stuff but I have the following problems
1 - can never find the size I need
2 - round here second hand is asking for £5 less than new so hardly a saving given it will be worn or could wear out quicker.
3 - charity shops have basically no children's clothes in

tigger001 · 30/10/2019 19:56

I buy all new for my DS. If i didn't people wouldn't be able to get if for a steal once I'm finished with it.

I can afford what we buy and then someone else gets a bargain, where the harm?

user1487194234 · 30/10/2019 19:56

Each to their own
As I work full time I don't really have time to look for decent second half stuff
Also you don't get the full range
Suits me better to buy new,but I don't judge anyone who doesn't

Pimmsypimms · 30/10/2019 19:57

I'm like you op. I recently went to a car boot sale and couldn't believe that some of the sellers were selling high street (fat face, oasis, white stuff etc) immaculate clothes for £2 each, they clearly had hardly been worn. I just thought, who can afford to buy this many clothes and hardly wear them, not only that, then sell them off so cheap!
I feel like there will never be a time that I can just go in to the higher end high street stores and just pick clothes off the racks that aren't in the sale and just buy them. Sad
