I can't ever imagine being so financially well off that...

... I would pay £49 for a toddler puddle suit from Mountain Warehouse when I could buy a second hand MW one on eBay or fb for £3.

There's a few of these like this.

Same goes for buying things such as Bumbos brand new. Jumperoos or vtech walkers.

Who actually buys these brand new when they can constantly be found for a fraction of the price in immaculate condition elsewhere.

It never occurred to me to look on eBay or the like! But good point raised I will from now on

Cathnip · 30/10/2019 21:29

Convenience. I mostly shop online. I could hypothetically spend an hour or two shopping around and then drive to collect said second hand item and save a half of the retail cost . Or I could work those 2 hours and earn multiples of what I save. Economics.

Princessconzuela · 30/10/2019 21:29

Well for that price I would rather get one from Jojomamanbebe but if you want to pay less for mountain warehouse stuff you can become a member and it reduces their prices drastically. I also like to buy items a size bigger and get two years out of them.

NarwhalsNarwhals · 30/10/2019 21:32

Mountain Warehouse have fantastic sales, and I get a discount, so my DD's current coat from there is online at £50 I paid £20 similarly my work coat is on there as £70, I paid £30.

I could have bought them second hand a bit cheaper but they've usually been washed and not re-waterproofed properly/re-waterproofed at all and as we walk everywhere (don't have a car) work part of the day outdoors, do forest school, hiking, camping etc coats are worth getting new - I'm outside on average 4 hours a day whatever the weather, up to 9 hours on a forest school day, so coats, waterproofs and shoes I always buy new, rest of our clothes are often second hand.

JoanieCash · 30/10/2019 21:37

C’mon, you must be able to ‘imagine’ how or why some people buy stuff new.

MrsGrindah · 30/10/2019 21:39

What a horrible thread. Nobody should care whether anyone else buys brand new or second hand. I’m not sure what you were hoping to achieve with this OP

A lot of people do.

I do love some narrow minded posting on mumsnet to remind me how open minded I am. Thanks OP!

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 30/10/2019 21:40

You could say the same thing about a lot of things you can buy. I'm not rich but I buy a lot of expensive makeup. Some people would balk at the thought of paying £29 for a lippie.

PookieDo · 30/10/2019 21:43

My Dsis bought everything brand new and sold it all and made a fair amount of her money back to be honest

Fair dos

middlemuddle · 30/10/2019 21:55

I have 3 kids aged 7,5 and 3 so sometimes I will buy good quality new because I try to make it last for all 3. :)

LeveeOHsaNotLeveoSAH · 30/10/2019 21:57

I don't buy a lot of toys as DC tires of them so quickly yet will play with spoons for ages. However, I did buy a junperoo. I got it in the sale and it wasn't much more expensive new than secondhand. I think the gap between second hand and new isn't big enough to justify the faffing about, having to collect, awkward dealings with people for example if you get there and the item is smelly, full of cat hair and you have to explain you don't want it. Whenever I sell things second hand, i sell them dirt cheap as I want someone to use them and for them not to go to landfill, but I think a lot of second hand items are too expensive for used goods.

Loveislandaddict · 30/10/2019 21:58

MW toddler rain suits

Good news, they are all reduced, so no-one has to pay £49!

Goodnightseamer · 30/10/2019 22:03

God I can't imagine being so well off that I don't Google and find out how much things cost 👏👌😳

Celebelly · 30/10/2019 22:05

Hands up who has now bought a new MW puddlesuit?

I joke, I joke...

QuestionableMouse · 30/10/2019 22:06

I bought my nephews new coats recently. I saw them, knew they'd like them and bought them.

Goodnightseamer · 30/10/2019 22:09

They've just sold out! I got one but I didn't pay £16.99. I took a fifty pound note and burned it instead because I'm so fucking thick. I do wish I could be more like the OP.

sophiekitten92 · 30/10/2019 22:13

It’s not unreasonable that some people buy things for new. Different people have different means and different priorities. A secondhand item is unlikely to match the condition of a brand new equivalent, so it’s hardly comparing like for like.

Me.

I'm not even going to offer a "made up excuse" as a pp put it. I bought (and still buy) everything for DS new because I want to and can afford to. Buying him second hand just doesn't even enter my thinking.

I'm not ick about it or anything, and I have bought things for myself from eBay, it's just not my go to way of buying things.

Everything is sold on, given to friends in need of donated to charity.

Crazycrazylady · 30/10/2019 22:16

I take hand me downs from my sister , neighbour and cousins but would never buy second hand from a website where I didn't know who had them before me.. not sure why really.. I just wouldn't

Ragwort · 30/10/2019 22:20

MrsT Happy to say my teenage DS is as frugal as me & loves nothing more than a charity shop bargain, or happily buys and sells for himself on DePop Grin.

AdoraBell · 30/10/2019 22:29

If you don’t want buy things new then don’t OP

When my DC were young we had no choice of buying clothes new or second hand. That was in Latin America. You either bought new items for your DC, or accept donated clothes from the church. There was no second hand market.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/10/2019 22:29

This is a bit ridiculous, somebody has to buy it first for somebody else to benefit. It’s not about being well off. I bought everything new for my firstborn and ended up passing it all on as I didn’t want another baby. I regretted that 13 years later when DS came along but was rather more knowledgeable and savvy then and bought loads second hand knowing the short shelf life. I wasn’t well off with either birth but you know, you have to get stuff!

bridgetreilly · 30/10/2019 22:48

Because sometimes time and effort is at a much higher premium than money. This is such an obvious thing, OP. Sometimes people have the time to go searching for second-hand, sometimes they don't have money and so they have to buy second-hand, but if you don't have the time and you do have the money, then you buy new because it's so much easier. Mostly what your post demonstrates is a lack of imagination, tbh.

AgentJohnson · 30/10/2019 22:53

If finding things in good condition and for pennies was as easy as you made out, more people would be doing it. I love a bargain but don’t have much patience so I bought most of my baby stuff new.

AJPTaylor · 30/10/2019 22:55

Well. If everyone starts buying 2nd hand, demand will go up and you won't be able to buy it for 3 quid for a start....
