... I would pay £49 for a toddler puddle suit from Mountain Warehouse when I could buy a second hand MW one on eBay or fb for £3.

There's a few of these like this.

Same goes for buying things such as Bumbos brand new. Jumperoos or vtech walkers.

Who actually buys these brand new when they can constantly be found for a fraction of the price in immaculate condition elsewhere.

As an early adopter who loves a gadget, I bought a lot of things new because that was the only way to get them. But I could often sell them on afterwards for at least half what I paid, so it wasn’t really full price in the end.

I didn't want to buy any of the big stuff second hand because, he's my first child, so I wanted him to get his pram and cot new because it's the only time I'll have a first child, I'll be keeping them for our next one(s)

But clothes and bouncers and travel cot, they're all currently doing the rounds in my family, he's the 7th great grand child, but the 9th to have some of the stuff as I have cousins who are only a few years older than him 😂. Some of it my friends have given me as they've all had children too.

I once bought a sleep suit for my D.C. off eBay. When it arrived I decided to resell it. I just couldn't bare to buy her something second hand. It's a psychological thing that the sellers home isn't as clean as mine even though a good wash is all that was needed

My ex didn't want second hand things in the house - I would have to say I binned the packaging already or couldnt find receipts as he always demanded proof. When my daughter was born she wasn't allowed anything second hand and anything used he binned (even my son's from a previous relationship) he never actually bought her anything, no nappies, clothes, furniture not a thing but i was to single handedly buy everything new. Needless to say, he is long gone now! And second hand all the way. Good for the environment and the pocket!

You do realise that the warehouse, shop, shipping containers and factory are many many times more dirty than anybody's home? It's not as though clothing is made in a hermatically sealed vacuum before it is presented for sale in a shop Confused

In fact clothing is often sprayed with extremely strong pesticides before selling, in order to prevent infestations of tropical insects eating the shipment.

I buy underwear new, and washing machines, simply because the water here is so awful that any second hand machines close enough for collection are already ruined. Car seat had to be new, riding hats and cycle helmets too. Chicken coops and rabbit hutches are tricky, if they've been well used they're likely to be infested with red mites, or soiled or chewed beyond redemption. Anything else I buy second hand and have never wished I'd spent more on a new one, be it clothes, appliances, furniture, books, toys. As long as it's safe, there's not much that can't be cleaned, and someone else's dirt isn't going to be much dirtier than mine!

PixieDustt · 02/11/2019 00:44

I buy my DS new stuff.
I do plan on having more children so DS's toys/bumboo/jumperroo and high chair etc will all be used again.

JenniferM1989 · 02/11/2019 01:00

I don't buy second hand and never have (apart from houses and cars). I do however donate anything in decent shape and working order once it's time to go.

If people like me and I'm sure many, many others never bought new stuff, the economy would be on it's arse, there would be thousands if not millions of people unemployed and you'd not have anything second hand to buy would you?

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 13/11/2019 21:11

You do realise the expensive shops use the same labour as the cheap ones? H&M and Arcadia score better on worker welfare than Gap and Boden

Yep, and I'd never buy from those shops either (Ethical Consumer website is quite helpful if you want to look up a company's credentials if you must buy new).

We've enough items of clothing in the UK to give every single man, woman and child on the entire planet two items of clothing. We don't need this constant stream of new stuff. It's incredibly bad for the environment and for workers rights/modern slavery.

Aridane · 12/01/2020 12:35

Honestly? I never find these 2nd hand, immaculate condition bargains everyone on mnet claims their DC are clothed in.

Ditto!

Butchyrestingface · 12/01/2020 12:36

Well, this fair takes me back, @aridane! Wink

Pardonwhat · 12/01/2020 12:42

I’ll never understand this reverse snobbery.
My baby things were a mixture of new and second hand.
But if we were all as morally superior to only buy big things second hand then there would be nothing to buy... if people can afford it then I can’t imagine having an opinion on it!

avocadotofu · 12/01/2020 12:52

I don't have time to spend ages looking for second hand things so I tend to buy my little one new thing from JoJo etc. We can afford it so I don't see the problem.

Sparklingplasters · 12/01/2020 12:53

Time, I’m too short on time to trawl for second hand stuff. I will pop into a charity shop if I’m in town and have some free time but rarely find anything decent

karencantobe · 12/01/2020 13:19

In my family, grandparents. All the gifts they bought for our kids are new. We bought second-hand.

Urkiddingright · 12/01/2020 13:20

Obviously someone has to buy new things in order for them to ever be available second hand.

I know what you mean though, I can’t bring myself to spend more than £20 on one piece of children’s clothing when they grow out of them so quickly and usually end up ruining them anyway.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 12/01/2020 13:23

You don’t get a guarantee with being second hand, also when you get the product you know it’s in good condition and not unseen damage... if it is you can’t return it.

I also want my goods this from a smoke and pet free environment.

You also need to have time to buy second hand (searching and collection, as most don’t deliver)

icannotremember · 12/01/2020 13:24

I wouldn't. It doesn't seem remotely worth it to me. But if that's what floats your boat, whatever, enjoy. I'm sure there are plenty of choices I make which seem mad to others.
