To ask what age did your DC start playing in their room alone?

I bought DD(5) a little playmobil set on eBay and she's happily playing with it upstairs in her bedroom. It's just struck me that she has never done that before.

She has some developmental delays and until very recently didn't pretend play so it might be why she hasn't previously done that.

I don't really know what to do with myself so am enjoying a nice quiet cuppa :)

What age did your children start to play alone? Just curious and a little bored! Grin

mine were about 2, but I'd be on the same floor and the door open with a gate.
It was also child proofed so the only thing they could hurt themselves on were their toys and this can happen when you are with them.

Fairylea · 29/10/2019 17:04

Never Grin Mine always followed me about like I had magnets in my feet. Hmm They used to bring toys downstairs and play with them in the living room.

I used to play upstairs on my own a lot as a child and used to love it.

As long as they’re happy either way! Grin

Mine is 3 and it's hit and miss, most days she can wake up before us and stays quiet playing in her room, other times she shouts for us to come sit with her/let her come into out bed, she's been doing this since around 2yr old.
In an evening/at weekend she'll wander off upstairs taking dolls/teddies with her and set up a den on the floor for them, but the doors are closed to stop the cats getting in the bedrooms, would love her to have access to her room at all times but not sure how i can do that and keep the cats out :-(

My older two never did. They're teens now and spend some time in their rooms on time restricted computers, and 14 year old reads in her room. DD1 never played alone but they're close in age and she played with dc2 as soon as it was possible - more the way you'd play with a puppy initially Grin from when they were nearly 3 and nearly 1. I'd be on the same floor though.

Dc3 is the only one of my children who played alone in his room while still of the playing with toys age, probably from about 5.

Usually pretend play involved all of them taking over the living room with complex and sprawling pretend worlds built of brio, Duplo, books (as building materials), Playmobil and toy cars...

Mine have always played alone, even just on the same floor, since they were crawling, but actually going upstairs to play in their room was more like 5-6.

My 2yo does and has for a while, most of this year (he’s almost three) but I wouldn’t leave him upstairs unsupervised. It’s nice to be able to get on with something at the same time, and so cute to listen to the make believe conversations!

Around 4 which is when the My Little Pony phase began. Thank f**k that's over.

Now at 7 its Lego and Playmobil and she's in her room for hours. We're not allowed to listen/watch as she gets embarrassed if we hear her making different character voices.

The other half the time she's bouncing round listening to Taylor Swift so its nice she can still be a kid really.

Never .. dd is 8 and hardly ever plays in her room by herself , always brings stuff into the front room

Barbie222 · 29/10/2019 17:39

Never, unless it's Lego.

ChaoticKate · 29/10/2019 17:47

My 20 month old will get play with her kitchen or her pretend tools for a while on her own. I don’t leave her too long because then she’ll play at decorating the living room wall with her colouring pens.

Camomila · 29/10/2019 18:09

Mine is 3.5 and will happily play in the living room while I'm in another room. He's done so since 2.5 but we live in a flat.

At my mums house (with stairs) he panics if I go up or downstairs without him, even if I literally say 'I'm just going to get a jumper/glass of water'

Camomila · 29/10/2019 18:11

His bedroom is a box room so most toys are in the living room.

ButteryGarlic · 29/10/2019 18:13

My dd was 5 when she started playing on her own in her bedroom. My ds has just turned 2 and will happily by himself with his dinosaurs for a long period of time each day.

JacquesHammer · 29/10/2019 18:13

Never but she quite regularly played in her playroom.

We’ve never had toys (apart from cuddly!) in her bedroom.

Bythebeach · 29/10/2019 18:15

DC1 about 4 reluctantly, DC2 at 2 and DC3 is 7 and never has - refuses to play alone ever...thankfully he likes to read so that has given me/his brothers a peaceful hour most days the last 6 months!!

BuxbyFree · 29/10/2019 19:07

My DD is 5 in january and has started playing in her room on her own the past 2-3 months maybe
