Thinking Gumtree attracts CFs?

I'm selling some 'brand' furniture. Great condition, hardly used, selling for £80.

First email: "I can only afford £30. When can I collect?"
Second email: "I'd need to travel from X and this will cost me £25 in fuel so can I buy for £55?"

Uh, no.

I don't go to Tesco and tell them I'll buy my weekly shopping for 50p because that's all I've got and I had to drive 20 miles to get there.

There is something about gumtree that attracts chancers.

SafetyAdvice0FeedWhenAgitated · 28/10/2019 19:01

And scammers. God the rental scams are horrible

Thistle23 · 28/10/2019 19:03

I will never use gum tree again , too many craziesConfused

Walkerbean16 · 28/10/2019 19:05

It's not just gumtree.

I recently saw a post on FB asking for a free timer cheap as possible item, someone said I've got one you can have for free. The asker then said great can you deliver it to here.

No pleases or thank yous!

Argh!

Walkerbean16 · 28/10/2019 19:06

Timer = or!

MyView2 · 28/10/2019 19:08

Yes! I have given things away on the freebies section and always get several people asking if I will deliver it for them so not only do they get my item for free it costs me time and fuel! That’ll be a no! I’ve also given away things for free and had the person advertise it for money the same day Angry

hidinginthenightgarden · 28/10/2019 19:11

God yes! Not just on gumtree though. There is something about freebies that make people even more entitled!

inwood · 28/10/2019 19:13

It's gumtree. CFs expect something for nothing.

MyView2 · 28/10/2019 19:16

Oh and people getting in touch for a freebie saying ‘I’ll have it’ like they are doing you a favour. No please or thank you, ‘I’d like to be considered for this.’ I always start out thinking this will be nice, I’ll be able to help someone out and end up losing faith in humanity Confused

lyingwanker · 28/10/2019 19:18

Ooo stuff like that really annoys me! Sometimes it makes me feel that I'd rather throw it away then let people take the piss!

I had that the first time I used Freecycle! Gave away a good bicycle and was happy to let it go to a good home, somewhere needed. Lady messaged to say her daughter needed a bike to get to school. I thought it a bit odd when bloke turned up, without daughter, to try it out.

The next day I saw it on FB Marketplace for £100! I wouldn't have minded much but I left the good gel seat on it too, thinking of the non-existent daughter's comfort. Angry

I may go on gumtree Hawaii and ask for air fair to collect random items.

OneHanded · 28/10/2019 19:29

God yes! Over twenty offers of asking price of £100 plus additional postage as they couldn’t collect then one CF who asked to have it £20 all in! Tempting mate but, no.

Doormat247 · 28/10/2019 19:33

My DP has this too when the buyers went to the wrong address on the other side of town - so the CFs said they would reduce the price to account for the fuel they spent driving to the wrong address despite ignoring the postcode my DP gave them.

He said no and they got offended as they had 'travelled so much'. They then spent over 30mins poring over every inch trying to find a fault to get a price reduction.

misspiggy19 · 28/10/2019 19:37

I have never had a problem with selling on Gumtree. Facebook on the other hand is full of time wasters

timshelthechoice · 28/10/2019 19:38

Worse is when they show up and try to swizz you: I only have 40p. That's too bad. Off you fuck then.

imiss · 28/10/2019 19:39

No word of a lie saw a Facebook post from a student on a local area board yesterday asking if anyone with a van was free today or tomorrow to help move him to his new place, furniture and all. He couldn't afford to pay anyone anything as he was only a student, and they should be aware he'd broken his foot last weekend so couldn't help with lifting. His profile photo was him pissed in fancy dress drinking straight out of a tequila bottle.
