Ryanair check-in

Hi
Dh, dd and myself were supposed to be traveling to Spain next week.
Unfortunately dh has been really ill and has decided not to go.

I have read on Ryanair's website that customers don't need to tell them if they don't turn up
But I'm confused about check in

If he doesn't check in they can resell the seat (he had a priority seat)

If he does check in and the flight is delayed over 2 hours he can get a Refund (it could happen!!)

Wwyd check in or not

Can you pay the admin fee and change the name and a friend come with you?

Soontobe60 · 27/10/2019 16:17

Why aren't you claiming back on his travel insurance?

user1471504234 · 27/10/2019 16:18

They won’t care either way. But it’s unlikely he would be able to get a refund if the plane was delayed and he wasn’t actually there. If there’s still a chance he might go, then check him in, but otherwise I’d just leave it. Or as pp suggests, see if you can get someone else to come and change the name on the ticket

greypetex · 27/10/2019 16:20

Well it would be odd to check in for a flight you are not taking. What's wrong with simply cancelling his flight?

Northernsoullover · 27/10/2019 16:25

This actually happened to my ex partner. Recently but its my children who told the story so it might not be 100% correct. Basically he checked in but couldn't go due to work or something. The flight was cancelled and he got compensation. More than he paid for the flight.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/10/2019 16:25

With Ryanair it will probably cost so much to change or refund the ticket it won't be worth doing. I'd probably just leave it rather than going to the effort of cancelling, especially if that would involve their call centre.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/10/2019 16:27

Maybe it is worth checking in on the off chance of a long delay?

Also is his illness something he can claim for on his travel insurance?

Ticktocksaystheclock · 27/10/2019 16:37

He had an operation and ended up with an infection.

the flight only cost £190 for all of us. and because he was in hospital I didn't bother with insurance
I haven't even booked the hotel yet!

The holiday is literally 2.5 days in Spain.
If I had insurance, the charge would have been more than the flight!

If I check him in I will also have an empty seat next me.

greypetex · 27/10/2019 16:40

Baffled. He is not travelling. No need to check him in. None.

DontLookBackIntoTheSun · 27/10/2019 16:40

How on earth could insurance for a short trip to Spain cost more than £190? I get multi trip annual insurance for a family for less than half of that cost!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/10/2019 16:43

That's very poor logic. Insurance covers more than cancellation this end. What if you had an accident or fell ill abroad? Could you cover the extra costs before you could fly home? And if it were so serious that you needed to be repatriated? Your body flown home?

Janek · 27/10/2019 16:47

If you cancel the ticket I think you can get the taxes back.

Ticktocksaystheclock · 27/10/2019 16:50

I've obviously not explained myself very well

I booked flights for a 2.5 day trip to Spain months ago
The flights were £190 for all 3 of us
I haven't YET bought insurance
I haven't even booked the hotel as I have been waiting for DH to maybe come if he got better

I WILL have insurance for me a dd I will book it tomorrow when I book a hotel

Ticktocksaystheclock · 27/10/2019 16:53

Thanks Janek I will do that

This happened to a friend of mine and I'm fairly certain that if he's not physically there to board the delayed plane, his compensation would be rejected. They rejected her fathers, and he was there but went home due to illness.

I'd cancel his ticket for the taxes back, if he's sure. If he's not, I'd not check him in. I'd book insurance tonight; the longer you leave it, the less valuable it is.

greypetex · 27/10/2019 17:00

No, you have not.

Why do you want to check him in for a flight he isn't boarding?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/10/2019 17:01

I'll get off me lectern then Grin

Cryalot2 · 27/10/2019 17:01

Sorry about things. I would ring up and explain and take it from there. You should get something back.
Recently flew with them again and despite the awful reports I have only had good experiences.
Have a good time .

Whistle73 · 27/10/2019 17:05

You could check him in online but they'll know he isn't at the airport because you'd have to print his boarding pass and zap it through the machine as you get on the plane - the staff would see he wasn't there!

You would get a seat next to you spare but no compensation if flight is delayed.

TheSecretJeven · 28/10/2019 04:29

I wouldn't bother checking him in. Let it go and try to get the taxes back.

pinkstripeycat · 28/10/2019 07:42

If he was awaiting surgery or waiting to be discharged from post op follow ups travel insurance wouldn’t cover cancellation for pre-existing medical anyway.

bohemia14 · 28/10/2019 07:49

You don't get compensation for a flight delay if you haven't travelled. Cancel the flight and you will get the tax back.

AmIThough · 28/10/2019 07:49

If his flight cost just over £60 return why would you even be bothered about checking him in just in case of a refund?

KennDodd · 28/10/2019 07:58

It's also worth pointing out that you can check in online and print boarding passes about a month before the flight, in case posters don't know. I'd check him in just in case he feels better.
