Ryanair check-in

Ticktocksaystheclock · 27/10/2019 16:12

Hi
Dh, dd and myself were supposed to be traveling to Spain next week.
Unfortunately dh has been really ill and has decided not to go.

I have read on Ryanair's website that customers don't need to tell them if they don't turn up
But I'm confused about check in

If he doesn't check in they can resell the seat (he had a priority seat)

If he does check in and the flight is delayed over 2 hours he can get a Refund (it could happen!!)

Wwyd check in or not

But if he’s checked in & not physically there, won’t the plane be held up while they wait for him? Or are you going to tell the staff what’s going on?

SoundsAboutRight · 28/10/2019 08:06

Don't check him in if he's not going to be there, that will be a real nuisance and a time waster for the airline...

coffeeforone · 28/10/2019 08:07

I would just check him in and you'll have an empty seat next to you!

coffeeforone · 28/10/2019 08:08

I don't think the airline will care. People check in and miss flights all the time.

MLMhun · 28/10/2019 08:11

And we wonder why Thomas Cook went bust when we have CFs checking in for flights they aren’t going to take and rubbing their hands at the hope of a delay and compo.

GPatz · 28/10/2019 08:11

'Why do you want to check him in for a flight he isn't boarding?'

She says in the thread.

TheSecretJeven · 28/10/2019 08:12

Not if he hasn't gone through security where the boarding pass is scanned for the first time, telling the airport that you've gone airside. The boarding pass is scanned again at the gate to remove you from the count of people airside and onto the plane. If it's not scanned, he'll go down as a No Show. The plane won't wait.

SoundsAboutRight · 28/10/2019 08:17

The airline WILL care, if people have checked in then they can't resell the seat as they will assume the person will be in it. And yes I know that the ticket will have been paid for anyway but there will be no food or duty free bought by that empty seat. And yes, I know they may not have bought anything anyway, but that's not the point. They will also be expecting X number of passengers. They will have done load balance and fuel loading for that amount of passengers.

greypetex · 28/10/2019 08:18

@GPatz

Really?

I didn't think anyone could genuinely expect to get compensated for a no show.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2019 08:19

It's only a nuisance for the airline if he checked in luggage and didn't board because they have to remove it from the hold.

Even if he checks in and scans in at the airport but doesn't physically get on board, they'll just go without him.

Whether or not the OP gets an empty seat next to her will depend on the pot luck of the Ryanair seat selection system, and we all know how that goes.

LynetteScavo · 28/10/2019 08:22

So you want to check him in the off chance of getting £63 back?

Let it go. Don't check him in and hope you're not delayed.

Mascarponeandwine · 28/10/2019 08:24

Don’t check in and write off the cost of his flight.

And remember to declare any gp visits that you and your daughter have had, to the travel insurance company (they often ask for everything on your medical records in the past 2 years even if it’s just a cold, antibiotics for an infection etc).

crazyhairbear · 28/10/2019 08:26

A lot of the time airlines oversell their seats and passengers go onto standby. If there are any standby passengers for that flight they will be offered your DH seat regardless of whether or not he checks in as they wait at the gate until the plane has boarded and then they are given any spare seats.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2019 08:51

Budget airlines, with the exception of Easyjet, don't oversell, so that's not a consideration here.

sugarbum · 28/10/2019 09:59

Honestly, in this instance, check yourself and DD in online I wouldn't apply for tax refund based on the admin fee.

From Ryanair website:

All Ryanair flights are changeable but they cannot be cancelled.

You don't need to notify us if you are unable to travel and if you can’t use your outbound flight you can still use your return flight.

Flight dates/times/routes/names can be changed up to 2.5 hours before the flight departure time via My Bookings unless you have already checked in, in which case please contact our call centre.

If you do not travel on your booked flight the air fare, fees and charges are non-refundable but you may apply in writing within one month of the date of travel for a refund of the Government Tax paid. Government tax refunds are subject to an administration fee. click here for fee details.(€20/£17 per passenger) If the refund amount is less than the applicable administration fee, no refund will be made.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 28/10/2019 10:09

Don't check him in, there's no value to it because they'll know he isn't travelling when he doesn't go through the airport security gates.

The seat next to you will be released when they see he has not arrived at the airport. It may or may not get taken, for a short flight it doesn't matter.

Always book insurance as soon as you book the flight. It doesn't cost any more, and it covers you for exactly this situation (unless you've taken a policy with a very high excess).

Have a lovely trip.

Ticktocksaystheclock · 28/10/2019 15:31

@MLMhun

**And we wonder why Thomas Cook went bust when we have CFs checking in for flights they aren’t going to take and rubbing their hands at the hope of a delay and compo.

Lol
He's paid for a flight a seat and priority

The airline will resell the seat and make more profit

If the flight is delayed we can claim compensation for it

That's not CF it's the law.

Thomas Cook went kapoot due to bad management

OP posts:
greypetex · 28/10/2019 15:59

Don't be bloody stupid.

Lol

How the fuck do you expect to be able to claim compensation for a seat they have sold to someone else Confused

Honestly OP you are being ridiculous now.

The idea that you check in someone who isn't intending to travel is batshit in itself, but to think an airline would resell the seat AND you could get compensation shows a real basic lack of understanding.

Just cancel his flight. Or don't cancel it. Don't check someone in who isn't intending to travel - it's really bloody stupid.

HariboLecter · 28/10/2019 16:13

A bit late now but www.which.co.uk/news/2018/11/millions-pre-book-2019-summer-holidays-but-is-your-trip-protected/

Also if he's checked in online, won't they do all the boarding calls etc... for him. Would this potentially delay the flight for others?

HariboLecter · 28/10/2019 16:15

Wish we could edit posts - just seen about the scanning of boarding cards/no shows.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 28/10/2019 17:16

Lol SoundsAboutRight and OP should care thatyhe airline loses out on the chance of selling food/duty free because? The same airline that takes every single opportunity to make money out of passengers even when it doesn’t cost them anything (changing a typo on a reservation name) or spoiling people’s holidays to maximize profits (overbooking) 😂

FWIW OP I would check him as you have spent the money anyway, just to have a free seat next to me

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/10/2019 17:24

Can’t believe how many people still don’t buy insurance the day they book. It’s pretty stupid.

SoundsAboutRight · 29/10/2019 07:34

"LOL" @PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks

And your reply is what's wrong with the world today - selfishness personified... The airline is a business, they are there to make money. If customers are willing to put up with the underhand way they make that money then who is the fool? The airline who knows they are making a quick buck anyway they legally can, or the customer who moans about them but still pays because they know in the end they are still getting a cheap deal? If people stopped flying with them because of those extra charges, then they would either go out of business or start doing things more fairly.

Ticktocksaystheclock · 29/10/2019 09:00

Totally agree with insurance

My DH quote for travel insurance because of his medical history was £124 for 3 nights in Spain

The flight cost £60 for him

The excess of the insurance was £100

No hotels / excursions / transfers have been booked

Today I will be booking all the above for me and my dd

OP posts:
BadLad · 29/10/2019 09:08

there will be no food or duty free bought by that empty seat.

I won't sleep tonight for worrying about that.
