Apple won’t replace 3 month old charging cable no longer working properly

Had a new phone 3 months ago, cable in box and it seems to have a faulty connection. Intermittent charging.

Dh just taken it back and they’ve said it must be user error/ mishandling as no manufacturing fault on the outside they can see ie I must have broken it. They couldn’t say how I must have broken it or in what way but just that must be the reason. Hmm

I am very careful with anything electrical and have kept said cable in box, nobody else has used it.

Mild mannered DJ stormed out as said they were just being utterly ridiculous. He works in IT and is adamant there is something wrong with it not caused by use.We honestly can’t believe how crap their customer service is.

I know it’s only a cable but they’re not cheap and it’s the principle and they were so arrogant.Any ideas where to go from here?

The act doesn't cover breakage due to misuse. iPhone will simply say that all their cables are produced to an excellent standard and they have proof of quality control. It's impossible for the OP to prove that the cable was not fit for purpose as it was working fine for 3 months. It would be impossible for her to prove that she didn't break the cable herself.

It's Apple we're talking about, iPhone is a product.

For the sake of a cable and with reputational harm at stake I'm certain Apple will not accuse the OP of misuse leading to damage, particularly if the OP discusses it with someone in a position of seniority like the duty manager who has decision making powers.

And a point of technical detail, the law states the onus is on the manufacturer of the goods to prove evidence of misuse, it is not the customer (the OP) who needs to defend this point. The Consumer Rights Act (2015) is on the side of the Consumer, otherwise giant behemoth companies like Apple would just push back on every complaint and blame the customer.

The principle of faulty goods, in law, is:

Any faults discovered within six months of delivery / purchase are regarded to have been there from the outset and it’s down to the retailer to prove otherwise – not you

YANBU OP but it's hardly a shock to find Tax-dodging make your own laws and rules US corporations don't care about pesky piffle like UK law.

I don't understand your point @Hingeandbracket - fine if it's your opinion, you're welcome to that, but it certainly isn't fact that Apple will flout U.K. legislation. As previously stated upthread, you start in the store where the purchase was made, then if they fail to give customer satisfaction (new cable, or repair), then its small claims court, but it will never get to that stage. It's a cable £15 at most, Apple don't mess about with that sort of transaction, they sortit.

The trouble is the front line staff are not well-versed in UK consumer rights so they just make stuff up as they go along. If you point it out, 99.999% of the time they go off, speak to their manager then return with a new cable in hand and jobs a good'un.

It's not up to OP to prove that the cable was not fit for purpose. Its up to manufacturer to prove that it WAS... Consumer law is on the buyers side in this case.

@Daddystilllost Hmm Simply pointing out to the numerous people saying apple cables never last more than a few months that it isn’t always the case.
