Apple won’t replace 3 month old charging cable no longer working properly

M0nsterpumpk1n · 26/10/2019 14:30

Had a new phone 3 months ago, cable in box and it seems to have a faulty connection. Intermittent charging.

Dh just taken it back and they’ve said it must be user error/ mishandling as no manufacturing fault on the outside they can see ie I must have broken it. They couldn’t say how I must have broken it or in what way but just that must be the reason. Hmm

I am very careful with anything electrical and have kept said cable in box, nobody else has used it.

Mild mannered DJ stormed out as said they were just being utterly ridiculous. He works in IT and is adamant there is something wrong with it not caused by use.We honestly can’t believe how crap their customer service is.

I know it’s only a cable but they’re not cheap and it’s the principle and they were so arrogant.Any ideas where to go from here?

Apple chargers break, apple earphones break. I buy cheaper alternatives and have found them better. Iphone warranties are only 12 months which tells you something.

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/10/2019 15:27

This surprises me too, their customer service is normally excellent. The cables don’t last long though.

ArsenicGreen · 26/10/2019 15:31

We are a totally Apple house, and neither myself, DH, or three teens have ever had a cable break. We have also always had fantastic customer service. I would try again.

blindmansbluff · 26/10/2019 15:33

Under 6 months it is assumed that the item is faulty due to an issue with the product and they have to prove otherwise.

Lolwhat · 26/10/2019 15:34

Absolute non issue, chargers break, should of taken it back sooner not 3 months of use later

M0nsterpumpk1n · 26/10/2019 15:36

You just plug a charger in. It should be able to with stand plugging it in, how can you misuse that?Confused

The final straw was when the very young shop assistant asked Dh to show how he’d plug it in.😂Dh was like “I know how to plug in a cable, I’m in my 50s with an MSc and have worked in IT for years, I know how to plug in a cable“.Blush He then left.

He has emailed them and they’re ringing back. He doesn’t normally get wrangled.😬It is the principle. Dh leaving an angry review.

Apple are shit.

We bought a laptop a few years back and developed a fault. Took it back and explained the situation and they exchanged immediately.

Terrible, terrible service. Has they looked and confirmed the fault, I'd have been happy, but the fact that the guy immediately knew of the fault and that it was to be exchanged showed clearly that they were selling computers they knew were faulty.

DP loves their stuff, but I wont go near them as i like innovative tech.

SirGawain · 26/10/2019 15:42

Why would you pay a fortune for a phone and the expect a crap cable from Poundland to work well for any length of time. Buy a Belkin or a Juice cable, a little cheaper than apple but still good quality.

littleducks · 26/10/2019 15:55

Apple products are high quality which is what you pay for when you buy the phone package. GrinGrin

It annoys me how badly these cables are made and you are expected to endlessly replace such a waste of resources

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/10/2019 15:56

Return the whole phone as under 12 months, get a refund, and then if you want buy a new one

SisyphusDad · 26/10/2019 16:01

Quote from the Which? website:

The first six months
If you discover the fault within the first six months of having the product, it is presumed to have been there since the time you took ownership of it - unless the retailer can prove otherwise.

During this time, it's up to the retailer to prove that the fault wasn't there when you bought it - it's not up to you to prove that it was.

Give them hell.

SmileyGiraffe · 26/10/2019 16:01

High price does not mean high quality. It just means high demand.

MitziK · 26/10/2019 16:03

He's fortunate that they accepted his ability to even identify a cable.

I had the dubious pleasure of an Apple 'Genius' inform me absolutely seriously that I needed to go home and bring them my laptop and charger so they could make sure I 'hadn't got confused' and asked for the incorrect replacement.

I might have pointed out that I was running an authorised Apple Service Workshop in the mid 1990s and was more than competent to identify the correct charger cable (which was shit) correctly. But they saw Female in Her Thirties, Obviously Incompetent and refused to sell me anything because I would Be Unhappy When I Made A Mistake.

Fucking tossers. I use windows laptops now. And buy, repair and upgrade the fuckers myself.

I'm just glad they're pricks to middleaged men as well

dreamyflower · 26/10/2019 16:07

I think that's so bad. If it's only 3 months old they should replace it. I've read that it is not recommended to purchase budget ones as they can be faulty. Although I know we all buy them (myself included) but Apple should really be giving you another one!

LazyFace · 26/10/2019 16:07

Hmm... I don't understand why most of posters are just happy to put up with crap and expensive products.
I'd be complaining too, OP.
Btw: your DH complaining... great photo of him.

Tellmetruth4 · 26/10/2019 16:15

This is why Apple are one of the richest companies in the world. They have more money stored in offshore accounts than the GDP of many countries.

Their quality has really gone downhill and soon people will start to realise they just release the same thing over and over again with minor tweaks for a ridiculous price. Since Steve Jobs died, they’ve just focused on sucking money from customers via massive ad spends. There’s no cache in having Apple products anymore, there’s no innovation, quality has dropped and it’s not about the end user experience anymore. I say this typing on my last iPhone.

TheDarkPassenger · 26/10/2019 16:16

If you’ve been putting it back in the box every time then you’ve probably been bending it too much.

Amazon ones are way better anyway. I can’t imagine getting so upset over this!

Tellmetruth4 · 26/10/2019 16:17

I forgot to say that one of the reasons I’m done with Apple is the lack of thought regarding the new headphone jack. If you want a decent headphone and not one of their shitty ones that come with the phone, you have to buy an adaptor. Every five minutes the adaptor becomes loose so you have to buy a new one. I shouldn’t have to keep doing that for such an expensive product.

adaline · 26/10/2019 16:21

High price doesn't necessarily mean high quality.

That being said I've had Apple charging cables that I've been using for years and there's nothing wrong with them.

Alsohuman · 26/10/2019 16:21

Tweet Apple, nothing sorts shoddy service out faster. It’s easy to see why they get away with it when you read this thread.

PookieDo · 26/10/2019 16:21

My DD had an iPhone 5S 2 weeks out or warranty and one of the IOS updates bricked her phone completely
I spent hours in the shop refusing to move until they tried everything to revive the phone. I complained and complained because it was their fucking update
I got nowhere and they offered me a very slight discount off a new phone 😡

wineisnecessary · 26/10/2019 16:21

Poundland charger cable works fine .
I get that they won't replace its wear and tear in future just buy cheap . I don't think any have a long life span .

motherheroic · 26/10/2019 17:12

iPhone chargers are notoriously shit when I had one whenever I tried to use a third party charger with a sturdy cable it either charged incredibly slowly or not at all. It's apples way or nothing apparently.

heartsonacake · 26/10/2019 17:45

The final straw was when the very young shop assistant

What’s his age got to do with it, OP? Being young doesn’t mean he isn’t an expert in the field he works in. He may not even be that young; he may just have a youthful face.

heartsonacake · 26/10/2019 17:48

My DD had an iPhone 5S 2 weeks out or warranty and one of the IOS updates bricked her phone completely

PookieDo If this was in the last year then I’m not surprised. The onus is on you to do your research, not buy an obsolete phone that Apple no longer support and expect them to replace.
