Apple won’t replace 3 month old charging cable no longer working properly

M0nsterpumpk1n · 26/10/2019 14:30

Had a new phone 3 months ago, cable in box and it seems to have a faulty connection. Intermittent charging.

Dh just taken it back and they’ve said it must be user error/ mishandling as no manufacturing fault on the outside they can see ie I must have broken it. They couldn’t say how I must have broken it or in what way but just that must be the reason. Hmm

I am very careful with anything electrical and have kept said cable in box, nobody else has used it.

Mild mannered DJ stormed out as said they were just being utterly ridiculous. He works in IT and is adamant there is something wrong with it not caused by use.We honestly can’t believe how crap their customer service is.

I know it’s only a cable but they’re not cheap and it’s the principle and they were so arrogant.Any ideas where to go from here?

Yeah I get through Apple cables like nothing on this earth. It's a running joke that I always get like 6 in my Christmas stocking to try to see out the year Grin The braided ones are the most resilient I've found.

SleepyKat · 26/10/2019 17:55

I think Apple is shit quality when it comes to chargers and phones. I love my iPad and have an amazon charger for it which is much better quality than the shit apple one it came with.

I know so many people with Apple phones with major battery issues on fairly new phones that I’ll never buy one.

DonnaDarko · 26/10/2019 17:59

I've been through so many Apple charges in the past. In the end, I just got the Amazon basics ones and they are still working after a couple of years.

PookieDo · 26/10/2019 20:33

@heartsonacake

No it was some time ago
They just offered me money off a new 5S, not that it was obsolete they just refused to tell me what had caused it - I didn’t want to buy another 5S for the same update to brick it did I Hmm

Jimdandy · 26/10/2019 20:45

Apple customer service is atrocious in general I think.

I have an iPhone and an iPad and I could do with a new phone. After the way they treated me last time I think I’ll be deflecting to Android

ActualHornist · 26/10/2019 20:51

I’m with you. My charger cable is at least a year old, I use it daily at work and at home and it’s fine? What are some of you doing that your cables are breaking so regularly?!

I would get online and raise a dispute with them, I think they have a Chat function. If not, definitely email. Say you expect a replacement of the faulty cable at the least.

GeneHuntLover · 26/10/2019 20:54

Apple chargers are shit, we have iPhones as work phones, IT are constantly replacing charger cables

Lemons1571 · 26/10/2019 21:03

I thought you were supposed to have a compatible charger to the phone. So that when the mobile is fully charged, the charger knows to power down and not keep charging and charging.
Don’t know how it knows this, but the fire service told us it was good advice. So we only use the original chargers with 2 yo handsets.

greypetex · 26/10/2019 21:05

There is a serial number on the cable to match it to the very expensive phone we bought

This is not a thing.

BlackCatSleeping · 26/10/2019 21:13

Apple chargers are not covered by the warrantee so they won’t replace them. It doesn’t matter how angry you get at the shop workers, there’s nothing they can do.

SisyphusDad · 26/10/2019 21:44

@BlackCatSleeping

Incorrect. Apple's (or anyone else's) Ts&Cs do not override statutory rights. "A contract does not make the illegal legal." Apple's shop workers Geniuses have been lied to by their managers.

Tolleshunt · 26/10/2019 21:54

I’m with you, OP. They’re majorly taking the piss. The law is on your side, so keep pushing.

Also, I am agog at the number of people on here who will happily let themselves be taken for a mug, and willingly trot off to spend more time and money sorting out a problem that legally lies with the manufacturer. Shock

Apolloanddaphne · 26/10/2019 21:58

My Apple charging cables last forever. What do people do with them that makes them break?

BlackCatSleeping · 26/10/2019 22:31

@SisyphusDad

The warranty only covers faults with the cable not damage due to misuse. Apple will always argue that their cables are made to a high standard so any fault is due to misuse. They are not allowed to replace the cable as if they do it for one person, there will be an outpouring of people claiming cable refunds. The OP cannot win this fight. Many, many people have tried. No one has ever been able to get Apple to replace a cable for free. They just won't do it.

SerenDippitty · 26/10/2019 22:45

I’ve gone through loads of cables for my iPad too.

FrangipaniBlue · 26/10/2019 23:29

I've never ever broken an Apple cable and I have an iPad, 2xiPhones an Apple Watch and in the past I've had an iPod touch, an older iPad, an iPod and a nano!

DS has DHs old iPhone 6..... it's 5 years old and still has the original cable.

Wtf are you all doing with them if they only last 3 months Confused

ohgetyou · 26/10/2019 23:39

I agree with you OP they produce shit expensive cables and they should replace them if they don't last more than a few months, or charge a cheaper price. Either or but the price of them indicates a sturdier and better product which clearly it isn't.

heartsonacake · 27/10/2019 03:27

Apple customer service is atrocious in general I think.

Jimdandy Actually Apple frequently tops the charts as having the best customer service around. It is exceptionally highly rated and they have an excellent reputation for their customer service.

TwiddleMuff · 27/10/2019 03:47

YANBU

My Apple chargers have lasted years. And when I have bought Poundland ones (as spares) I’ve noticed they don’t charge the same way (slower and inconsistently).

Keep bothering them for a replacement.

Bibijayne · 27/10/2019 03:50

If it's under six months old, the retailer needs to repair or replace the cable under the consumer rights act 2015.

RingtheBells · 27/10/2019 04:04

The ones that come with the products look like they are the £19 1m ones, the 2m ones are £29, I have about 6 and they all seem fine, some I have had for years and never had a problem. DS seems to go through a lot of cables though.

Palaver1 · 27/10/2019 04:06

OP get in touch with customer services.
It doesn’t matter that she can get a 10 pence cable. Her original cable is not fit for purpose after 3 months usage that’s not good enough.

RingtheBells · 27/10/2019 04:06

Where is the serial no. on the cable?

Tojigornot · 27/10/2019 04:27

Yeah, I’m not buying the serial number tying it to the phone story. I have plenty of Apple cables that were supplied with hardware, they don’t have serial numbers on them.

I have plenty of them because they don’t fail, in my experience anyway. I’ve got ones that have been going for years. I’m careful with them though, and only use them at home. For the backup battery that I carry around with me in my bag, or often shoved in a pocket, I use an Anker flexicable. They will take a shed load of abuse that I wouldn’t expect the Apple cable to cope with. You do have to employ some common sense.

M0nsterpumpk1n · 27/10/2019 06:15

support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204566

Serial number 👆

And I did look after it. I haven’t had issues with Apple cables before ie they’ve lasted for much longer which is why I wanted it replaced. Apple and Anker cables last much longer, there is something wrong with this one.
