I hate sweet potatoes. AIBU

I don't like sweet potatoes. There was a time that I could tolerate them, but that was before they got everywhere. Before sweet potato fries and sweet potato mash and all the rest. I could swallow the odd sweet potato. Occasionally.

My husband likes them to a ridiculous degree and cooks them with everything. Roasts them with roasts. Mashes them with mash. Includes them in his turn to cook (4 nights a week). And that's not a problem because they are separate and I obviously don't have to have any, which I don't. He KNOWS I fucking hate them! He KNOWS I never eat them! Because I don't bloody like them.

So. For the the past 3 Fridays he has made a lovely stew for supper.
Chicken, then lamb, then beef. But each time he has included some sweet potato in the mix. Not so lovely for me. Every mouthful includes some sweet potato, which ruins it. I like savoury stews .Sweet potatoes no doubt have their place in certain recipes, but you can't, for example, just drop them into a shepherd's pie or a lasagne or a spag bol (not bowl) without it tasting completely different to what you are expecting.
He has form for messing up traditional dishes.
Boxing day bubble and squeak. He put GARLIC in it!!
I like garlic. I LOVE garlic! But only in its place!
I was just so looking forward to having my (own families) traditional mash and sprout and carrot and cabbage fry up. And the bastard fucked it up with garlic!!

His reasoning is that he only put a very little bit of sweet potato in because he knows I don't like it much. And that he only put a very little bit of garlic in the bubble and squeak because he knows I think it spoils the taste.

So he thinks he is being really very reasonable by putting in only a small amount of the stuff I don't like, be it sweet potato or garlic.

Me: This bubble and squeak tastes of GARLIC!

He: Well I only put a little bit in because I know you don't like it in Bubble and Squeak

So why the fuck do you feel the need to put it in at all? You are either very stupid, or you want to antagonise me!!

We've been married 35 years. I like garlic, but only in its place,
I've almost always not really liked sweet potato. I'm amazed and gutted that he still goes out and buys them every Saturday, I absolutely love every other vegetable, sprouts are my favourite.

I'm going to print off all replies.
He needs to know that if you cook a stew, you should take into account the preferences of your wife/partner of 35 years plus.

I hate sweet potatoes, they taste like vomit.

My DH once put spring onions in breakfast scrambled eggs. I spent an hour explaining clearly that scrambled eggs are perfect as they are m, just eggs, splash of milk and seasoning.

CheeryB · 26/10/2019 09:47

I have a t shirt that says 'coriander ruined my salad' It does. It tastes like soap to me. Evil foul stuff. Worse than sweet potatoes.

Garlic in bubble and squeak???? Where will this madness end? YANBU. If you don't like the taste of SP then he shouldn't put any it in at all. I love parsnips but my DH hates the taste/ texture/ thought/ sight of them so if we are sharing a casserole, I leave them out. Also, I completely sympathise in general as I really think too many things have unnecessary garlic in them.

redchocolatebutton · 26/10/2019 09:49

yanbu
they are ok in some foods as a veg but they are bot a potato substitute imo

CheeryB · 26/10/2019 09:51

Spring onions in lovely buttery scrambled eggs!!?. My heart would be in my boots. How disappointing :(

I hate sweet potatoes, they make me feel sick. Coriander tastes of soap and smells like cat's pee - where did you get your teeshirt from OP? I need one!

CatsOnCatnip · 26/10/2019 09:57

I like sweet potatoes, but I WOULD NEVER PUT THEM IN A STEW. They go too mushy and the flavour isn’t right. Same with butternut squash. It had its place, for sure, but as a roasted side or I stick it in a king prawn/fish laksa or quick curry if I’ve got loads.

As for garlic in bubble and squeak... LTB.

This is why I don’t let husband cook, too stressful.

recrudescence · 26/10/2019 09:58

Sickly, slimy, pappy, pointless. Ditto butternut-fucking-squash.

alreadytaken · 26/10/2019 10:01

YABU. Sweet potatoes are great and the person who cooks get to make what they like, then the others eat it or make their own.

When used in a stew they just need to be added later than the other foods so they dont go mushy.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/10/2019 10:04

Coriander tasting like soap may be genetic. It genuinely tastes different to some people and scientists have found some variants in genes that govern taste and smell in some people who get the soapy taste.

PralineCookies · 26/10/2019 10:12

YANBU about the sweet potatoes. He shouldn't add them to your food if he knows that you dislike them.

YABU about the garlic though. Garlic makes all savoury dishes better and is a must in bubble and squeak.

StoatofDisarray · 26/10/2019 10:32

Sounds like he's a rubbish cook too. Doesn't he have a palate? Cooking doesn't consist of throwing random things into a pot and thinking they'll go well together.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 26/10/2019 10:41

Garlic goes in everything! Bubble and squeak is so bland without garlic, salt, pepper. Do you have the blandest taste buds known to man??

Sweet potato is ok but you don’t want too much of it in a meal and certainly not every day

Gardai · 26/10/2019 10:47

Yanbu op.
I like sweet potato fries but why do they end up slimy and wrinkly when I make them ? Oven baked with olive oil (thread high jack sorry) 😮😃

DeborahAnnabelToo · 26/10/2019 10:49

He really needs to work out a way for him to have sweet potatoes ON THE SIDE of what he cooks for both of you, not integrated into the bloody dish! It's ridiculous he's cooking it INTO dishes when he knows you can't stand them. The "it's only a little bit" argument is null because when you hate the taste of something it is detectable even in tiny amounts and sweet potato (and garlic) are strong flavours. So YABU at all to expect him to listen to you and find a way that he can still have the abominations but that you aren't made to force food down that's full of an ingredient you hate.

DeborahAnnabelToo · 26/10/2019 10:51

And people who are saying "I love sweet potatoes" etc are missing the point of what you're asking.

GREATAUNT1 · 26/10/2019 11:19

I love sweet potato & do exactly the same as your husband. Actually I’d think that I was him if it wasn’t for the fact that I put chill in everything rather than garlic. YABU, cook your own bland food in future.

CheeryB · 26/10/2019 11:55

Just Google the phrase 'coriander ruined my salad' the t shirt will come up in results.

Sweet potatoes Spag Bol is a whole new realm of disgusting. Just why?

I can tolerate SP in very small doses, when carefully cooked and their sweetness balanced by strong savoury flavours (garlic, blue cheese, stuff like that).

But just fired in willy nilly, absolutely not.

And I hate them as a potato substitute. They don’t taste anything like potatoes (and I adore potatoes) so stop fobbing me off with their sickly sweet orangeness. Thank you.

CheeryB · 26/10/2019 12:01

Let me reiterate. I love garlic. I love garlic in stuff it should be in. I like curries and all sorts of weird strong tasting stuff. But you just can't have garlic in bubble and squeak. It is a thing of beauteous taste all in its own. It is a shock to the system to find it sullied.

OP posts:
kalinkafoxtrot45 · 26/10/2019 12:06

YANBU. I think sweet potatoes are lovely and could eat them every day. But you hate them and even a little bit ruins the meal for you, so your DH is being an arse. He could easily make some just for himself. I feel the same about mustard, and goat cheese, and blue cheese, and cauliflower.

CheeryB · 26/10/2019 12:08

I really like celeriac as well but it gives me the belly ache. I wonder why that is? He wouldn't dream of putting it in a stew, he knows it makes me fart.

OP posts:
Inebriati · 26/10/2019 12:11

Sweet potatoes are the okra of the potato world.

CheeryB · 26/10/2019 12:13

I'm about ready to show him this thread now. Let's see how he likes these answers.
