... to think that putting a stemmed glass on a coaster is idiotic

I took in a package for the neighbour today and when I took it over she offered me a glass of wine... yes please. She then rushed at me with a coaster when she noticed I was about to put it down on the side table.

Coasters are to prevent condensation from marring the table. The foot of a stemmed glass will not have condensation. All a coaster does when a stemmed glass is involved is to make an unstable target for putting down something that is already top-heavy. It really is alarmingly stupid.

YANBU. Try telling DH though Grin

blackteaplease · 25/10/2019 18:40

Er, I put all drinks on coasters regardless of the shape. My table stains easily

BIWitch · 25/10/2019 18:40

Er ...

I drink my gin in a stemmed glass, and I can promise you that there's lots of condensation that runs down on to the table! (Mind you, I have a lot of ice in my drink)

CastleCrasher · 25/10/2019 18:41

Unless you dribble down the glass and leave a ring I guess? Are you unusually clumsy? GrinWine

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 25/10/2019 18:41

Maybe she’s worried that you’ll dribble some down the side of the glass...

lanbro · 25/10/2019 18:41

Or to protect a table from a dribble of liquid going down the outside of the glass...I use a coaster with a wine glass, I'm clearly stupid🙄

Vulpine · 25/10/2019 18:42

Haha never thought of that. Must inform the inlaws!

ChicCauldron · 25/10/2019 18:42

Coasters are used for all drinks, not just hot ones - condensation on cold drinks, heat rings from hot drinks - coasters are the way to go.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/10/2019 18:43

It really is alarmingly stupid.

Grin might be the biggest overreaction on MN today which is saying something!

seaweedandmarchingbands · 25/10/2019 18:44

Surely alarmingly stupid is leaving knives at toddler height, or driving after taking sleeping tablets? Isn’t this just...none of your beeswax?

ToLiveInPeace · 25/10/2019 18:44

Yep, YABU and a bit mean. Drinks can easily slosh or dribble. She offered a drink, just accept it graciously.

GPatz · 25/10/2019 18:44

Thank God you and your knowledge of glassware etiquette are here to save us from any embarrassing faux pas.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 25/10/2019 18:45

Condensation does dribble down the side of my gin glasses. I don't use a coaster because the table is buggered anyway but I would if I had a nice table.

Bit of an odd thing to be bothered by.

ShinyMe · 25/10/2019 18:45

I always use a coaster. My coasters are also to protect against scratches and clanking noises.

NoProblem123 · 25/10/2019 18:45

Who puts wine glasses down .....

Quitedrab · 25/10/2019 18:45

So true, OP. It's both alarming and outrageous.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 25/10/2019 18:45

My coasters have stopped many a red wine dribble from reaching the table. Easier to wipe a coaster than try to get a wine stain off the table.

thetardis · 25/10/2019 18:45

hang on, your neighbour gave you wine for taking in a parcel and you're complaining? :D

RolytheRhino · 25/10/2019 18:46

YABU. Condensation can form on the upper part of the glass, then run down the stem. Alternatively, as PP said, you might dribble some on the outside of the glass

I find it hard to believe that someone gets a free glass of wine and then is this snarky about it because of something so minor. If it's real, I hope she sees this post and never invites you in again.

PrincessSarene · 25/10/2019 18:46

Yep, coasters for everything here. As someone said there’s a chance of condensation or a dribble running down the outside of the glass. And as for an unstable target, I’m pretty clumsy/badly coordinated and can usually manage to put a glass down on a coaster. How many glasses of wine are you expecting to have to not be able to get the glass safely on the coaster?!! Wink

thetardis · 25/10/2019 18:46

she is clearly being vu and non-u. heaven forfend it was a poor vintage op?

Anniegetyourgun · 25/10/2019 18:47

There's so more to it than the condensation. In fact I wouldn't even think condensation, I'd think drips. Don't understand the wobbly coaster problem, either. Only have stable coasters chez moi. Were they crochet?

Smidge001 · 25/10/2019 18:47

Condensation runs down the stem for me too. Also think the coaster protects the table from the glass which can scratch

AutumnRose1 · 25/10/2019 18:48

This.

She was extremely nice to you and your response and thread is extremely shitty. I feel sorry for you if you're this mean and snotty. Halloween Angry
