... to think that putting a stemmed glass on a coaster is idiotic

I took in a package for the neighbour today and when I took it over she offered me a glass of wine... yes please. She then rushed at me with a coaster when she noticed I was about to put it down on the side table.

Coasters are to prevent condensation from marring the table. The foot of a stemmed glass will not have condensation. All a coaster does when a stemmed glass is involved is to make an unstable target for putting down something that is already top-heavy. It really is alarmingly stupid.

Not sure I would call it idiotic. Rubbing your eyes with fresh chili juice? Yes. My dad is big into coasters, he'd put his coasters on coasters if left to his own devices. Some people just have their funny ways.

DragonflyInn · 25/10/2019 19:19

#TeamCoaster here tooSmile

Jolonglegs · 25/10/2019 19:19

We always use coasters under any kind of glass. Why is it an issue?

Kdubs1981 · 25/10/2019 19:22

It's only idiotic if you don't mind getting wine rings on your furniture from it running down the outside or condensation from a chilled white running down the outside...

Depends on your definition of idiotic I suppose 🤷🏼‍♀️

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2019 19:25

She will be offering you ‘serviettes’ next.

SleepingSoul · 25/10/2019 19:28

How much wine were you drinking that you can't get the glass on a coaster? All glasses/ mugs/cups go on coasters here, don't want marks on my tables, be it from condensation or drips.

Her house, her table, her rules.

I’d give you daggers if you put anything on my table without a coaster. I don’t have a lot that’s nice but I love my table. Her house, her rules, it’s only a coaster! I’d be glad of the friend and the glass of something chilled.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 25/10/2019 19:35

Liquid can run down the side of any glass or cup. YABU.

Dahlietta · 25/10/2019 19:36

I presume that either this thread was intended to be lighthearted or you had more of that wine than you're letting on, OP.

Sparklingbrook · 25/10/2019 19:37

Storm in a teacup on a coaster.

MinTheMinx · 25/10/2019 19:38

I think having a mean nature is idiotic yet you think it's ok OP. We're all different aren't we?

onanothertrain · 25/10/2019 19:41

You're unreasonable, ungrateful and a dick

starfishmummy · 25/10/2019 19:46

This reminds me of an ex. He had one of those old fashioned coffee tables which have a ceramic tiled top. You know those wipe clean ceramic tiles - but still coasters came out. A cuppa was actually served in a cup and saucer with a coaster underneath and with a side plate (also on a coaster) for my biscuit.

I always worried about sitting down in case I left a dent on the sofa

NoImNotSpecial · 25/10/2019 19:47

This has got to be a wind up? We're about to go down the drain with Brexit, the planet is burning, Trump's manic finger is on the red button, and you're stressing about the appropriate use of coasters?!!

BIWitch · 25/10/2019 19:49

Condensation on stemmed glasses is why these things exist

SpiderCharlotte · 25/10/2019 19:51

I am not alarmed by this. I now feel as though I should be.

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2019 19:56

The descriptions in the op make me laugh ‘rushed at me’ ‘unstable’ target as well as the alarmingly stupid. Funny

But yeh you’re being a bit ungrateful

AdaColeman · 25/10/2019 19:59

In a perfect world she would have used a stem wrap instead of a coaster.

summersherewishiwasnt · 25/10/2019 20:01

Please tell me about your stain free wine. I need it.
Yabu. Coasters are not only for condensation.

MissMarpletheMurderer · 25/10/2019 20:17

NoProblem123 I gave up reading after your reply as it solved the issue.

OatyGoaty · 25/10/2019 20:39

You need to get out more.

Winesalot · 25/10/2019 20:45

The amount of wine rings (white and red) on my tables is a good indication that they are indeed needed. White from the fridge has condensation and then there is the dribbles on both. Or I and my friends are just messy....

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 25/10/2019 20:58

I saw some coaster today in JL that were slices of agate and totally impractical beaded ones Confused the agate ones aren't even round! I did see some lovely table linen though and now have wants.
