There's a new organisation just being set up to defend the rights of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals, since Stonewall clearly isn't doing the job. The working title of this new organisation is LGB Alliance.

They have a twitter account: @AllianceLGB

Twitter has "shadowbanned" this official twitter account - ie they have made sure @Alliance LGB won't turn up in searches, etc. Meanwhile there's a bunch of fake accounts trolling the LGB Alliance (eg with dashes and dots in strategic points, but using the same avatars, etc) which Twitter thinks are just fine and dandy.

AIBU to think Twitter are run by a bunch of homophobes who cannot stand the idea of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals having an organisation of their own?

I think theres a broader question here that would be interesting to explore:

Why are trans people's comfort and rights, whether on Twitter or elsewhere, put above gay men and women?

mauvaisereputation · 25/10/2019 13:13

Pinknews says that "the new “LGB” group seems to consist of a surprising number of straight people." www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/10/23/lgb-alliance-facing-backlash-from-lesbians-gays-bisexuals/

I think T might be more on this group's mind that L, G or B!

Lifecraft · 25/10/2019 13:20

What does LGBT stand for. I've asked loads of people, but I can't get a straight answer.

ffswhatnext · 25/10/2019 13:27

Erm Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender

ffswhatnext · 25/10/2019 13:29

They are against anyone who questions transgender. It’s nothing new to get shadowed banned or completely banned.

Lifecraft · 25/10/2019 13:32

Erm Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender

Oh dear, another attempt at humour on here falls flat.

I heard this too, that it's mostly straight trans people throwing their weight behind a handful of transphobes who happen to be L, G or B. All the LGB folk I know have completely disowned the group and there's even been a solidarity march planned for near me in response.

crankyassnoperope · 25/10/2019 13:37

Oops, rogue "trans" in there, it's just STRAIGHT people, not straight trans people!

crankyassnoperope · 25/10/2019 13:37

Or maybe I was going to write straight transphobes? Either way works.

crankyassnoperope · 25/10/2019 13:41

I saw this doing the rounds...

Why are trans people's comfort and rights, whether on Twitter or elsewhere, put above gay men and women?

That’s not even remotely relevant to the OP. If you want to explore that question, why not start a thread about it?

Lumene · 25/10/2019 13:48

The new group includes a Stonewall co-founder, Simon Fanshaw, who is gay and a previous funder of Stonewall who is a lesbian. Which are the straight ones?

LGB rights and issues are not the same as T rights, and in some cases directly contradict each other (eg lesbians may wish to meet in penis free spaces but trans groups may object). So it makes sense to have separate groups to represent the two on some issues.

ActualHornist · 25/10/2019 13:59

Sure LGB Alliance is a direct response to Stonewall who have centred T in absolutely everything?

I wouldn’t trust anything Penis News has to offer.

crankyassnoperope · 25/10/2019 14:01

And yet the closest they could come to LGB to man their Twitter in the thread above was someone who is "theoretically" bi, but also seems to forget that bi people even exist? No credibility with me I'm afraid. Sounds like a transphobic publicity stunt.

Lumene · 26/10/2019 12:06

Sure crankyass, a Stonewall co-founder setting up a new LGB org because same sex rights have been trampled on by the original is a ‘transphobic publicity stunt’.

Whatever words you want to use to describe it, same sex attracted people are perfectly within their rights to say they prefer one sex or other based on their biology. And to defend their associated rights to same sex groups, dating pools, spaces etc.

That was what Stonewall used to support and no longer does. A new organisation is needed.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/10/2019 13:13

On the platform at that first meeting of the LGB Alliance were: two lesbians, one gay man, a third lesbian who until recently had identified as a transman, and a same-sex-attracted transwoman. And, briefly, two lesbian filmmakers.

Which of those is straight, then? Which of these evil straighties is manufacturing a split in the LGBT+ movement for their own, evil, straight ends?

Or maybe, just maybe, these are people who have been deeply grieved by the very real split in the LGBT+ movement in recent years, have been rebuffed in their approaches to heal the split by the current shower running Stonewall, and are now reluctantly having to set up a new organisation which will actually oppose homophobia, rather than - as Stonewall is - contributing to it?

And, @crankyassnoperope , I am reasonably sure the person running the twitter account (because she's signed a few tweets) is Bev, one of the lesbians who organised the event.

Now, it is literally your privilege to dismiss a lesbian who considers herself "theoretically bi" as straight, just as it's your privilege to dismiss this same women, one of the founders of the Gay Liberation Front back in the day as straight, but if you are so caught up in your own heteronormativity that you assume even people at an LGB event are automatically straight, just because they disagree with you, that's hardly Bev's fault.

Link to Twitter

Scroll down a bit. Their crowdfund has been removed while just giving respond to complaints.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/10/2019 14:12

Can't let uppity homos have money of their own, eh?

(Control of resources is straight out of an abusers' handbook.)

Taking the LGB away from the T separates sexual orientation from identity. Sexual orientation that Stonewall now calls phobic.

How ironic that those kicking off say that the new site is run by straight people.
