to think that an election on the 12th December is a bad idea because it will affect Christmas at primary schools?

How many Christmas plays will be on on that day?

I am sure some will be able to be altered - but it's a really crappy time to close a school for voting when there are parties, school plays and the end of term atmosphere.

There are other reasons as well - but this is just one that may not have been thought about.

Christmas Play vs Election, personally think it’s an absolute no brainier which is more important!

MirandaWest · 24/10/2019 20:40

Tbh I doubt that Boris will have considered school Christmas celebrations.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 24/10/2019 20:41

Aren’t the polls usually open until 10pm?

slipperywhensparticus · 24/10/2019 20:42

Clearly the Christmas play is far more important somebody please think of the CHILDREN!

chomalungma · 24/10/2019 20:43

Can schools refuse to be a polling station?

OP posts:
OublietteBravo · 24/10/2019 20:43

I think postal votes + Christmas post is more of a concern.

chomalungma · 24/10/2019 20:44

It is an issue though

Gee, critical election or Nativity play, however to resolve such a tricky dilemma?

The schools will cope.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 24/10/2019 20:45

I’ve never actually seen a polling station in a school in Britain. Is it common here?

cardibach · 24/10/2019 20:45

The whole issue of a GE as a means to a no deal Brexit or to blame others for the mess if he loses is far more of a worry than any (or all) Primary Christmas plays...

timshelthechoice · 24/10/2019 20:46

Dead god, fate of the entire country on the line but no, the fucking Christmas play is more important!

daisychain01 · 24/10/2019 20:46

Can't the schools move their nativity plan by.one.day. How difficult is that?

Or reschedule it to the following Tuesday. Hardly the end of the world.

chomalungma · 24/10/2019 20:47

Apparently James Cleverley doesn't want to be The Grinch

Velveteen. Yes lots of primary schools close.

daisychain01 · 24/10/2019 20:48

@Velveteenfruitbowl some villages use school halls if they don't have a suitable / accessible village hall.

TricklBOO · 24/10/2019 20:48

A minimum of two schools round here are used as polling stations. Usually both primary.

Grasspigeons · 24/10/2019 20:49

All our polling stations arent in schools now (my area i mean) theyve gradually moved into church halls, scout huts and so on.

Many of the venues that are needed for an election - polling stations - have been booked for other things - because it is near Christmas.

This thread made me laugh out loud.

Imagine this in the House Of Commons - "no we cant have an election on the 12th because school nativity plays will be disrupted".

Come on. Be realistic.

I agree chom

Cuddlysnowleopard · 24/10/2019 20:57

I know I've had a couple of beers, but this made me laugh. You are absolutely right, OP. School where I am a governor is used as a polling station, although they use a side classroom and keep the school open, usually. And it is the nativity play that week.

Sure they'll manage though.

TheFaerieQueene · 24/10/2019 21:00

I’m sure that we can cope with a few fewer Christmas events ffs. We are going through the biggest political turmoil in generations and you are worrying about this nonsense.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/10/2019 21:00

OP, you might be being daft - obviously the election is more important - but the government is genuinely worried people will think like you and be too annoyed to vote for them.
