To ask postpartum hair - how long?

Hi all, just wondering if you're able to please tell me how long it took from the point that your hair started shedding post pregnancy to it slowing down? By slowing down I mean not coming out in clumps every time you went anywhere near it with a brush or god forbid.. with shampoo? Thanks

It was around 6 months it stopped falling out - this was after twins. I didn’t notice with my singleton but I have a lot of hair and it seems to be getting thicker year on year.

hellotabitha · 24/10/2019 15:55

Oh! Well I have rubbish thin hair anyway so maybe I didn’t notice with my first!

queenofmycastlex · 24/10/2019 15:55

Mine significantly improved after a year - both in that it stopped falling out but also became much healthier and shinier.

Mine has gone completely back to how it was pre pregnancy, actually slightly better. I kept up regular cuts at the hairdresser & no hair dye (although that was due to suddenly being allergic after giving birth which also went away after a year) .

fia101 · 24/10/2019 16:01

Month 4 post partum my hair started coming out in clumps - I was devastated with baby 1 and thought I was going bald.

Baby 3 I'm used to it now.

Hoovering all the time.

Stopped heavily shedding about month 8. Regrowth is about 5 inches now and baby is 18 months.

With baby 1 I bought every supplement on amazon but don't think it made a difference

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 24/10/2019 16:01

This has only happened with dd who’s my fourth, I don’t remember it happening with the others. Started at about 4 months for me and it was just coming out in handfuls every time I touched my hair, the amount that would come out in the shower was unbelievable. She’s almost 7 months now and it’s slowed right down thank goodness. I don’t have any bald spots that I can see and no noticeable regrowth yet. I think it might be happening this time because I’m much older, and also because dd has been much more difficult than the others. My periods returned very quickly with the others despite breastfeeding, but no sign of that yet either. I just feel knackered

Piglet89 · 24/10/2019 16:19

I don’t know if I’m awaiting a sudden baldness but mine still hasn’t shed and I am 9 weeks PP. it sheds less than it did when I was pregnant.

Cloudsandrainbows · 24/10/2019 17:34

Sorry, mine is still awful and DC is 9 months. The shedding is slowing down, it was really bad, actually had a reseeding hairline at the sides and now have short fluffy bits growing back. I ended up have it cut much shorter. I have tried multi vitamins but didn't think they made a difference. Try a new style is all I can suggest, it really does get you down, I know Flowers

SoyDora · 24/10/2019 17:35

Piglet89 mine started at 4 months PP with all three. Fingers crossed it won’t happen for you though!

LutherRalph1 · 24/10/2019 17:39

Started at 5 months and I've just cut it all off at 18 months because I can't bear getting out of the shower like a yeti any longer

Kelbec · 24/10/2019 19:45

Mine stopped coming out in rediculous amounts when my son was around 6 months. He's now almost 9 months and it's starting to repair itself. Although, it does still look like someone has had the clippers around the front of my head.
Unfortunately, I don't think there's alot you can do about it. Just take care of your hair and be gentle with it.

Sian20 · 26/07/2020 16:58

Hi my baby is 5 months old and noticed my hair falling out about 4 weeks ago also straight after hair dye. Did yours come away from the roots? Every time I run my fingers through it I loose around 20 strands when I was and brush it is unbelievable. Been advised to wash once a week or use dry shampoo but if it’s going to fall is it not going to fall anyway. I have very thin hair anyway so haven’t got much to play with. I just praying it stops very soon like now !!!!

Loiis12345 · 04/01/2021 22:11

@snowball28. Hiya I’m having the same issue I know this post is old and your shedding has probably stopped now but I’m
Having so much hair loss but mine seems to be effecting the crown of my head to at the back! So when I have my hair down you can slightly see where the loss is 😕 did yours grow back ? I’m getting sick of losing all this hair !! The joys of having babies 👶 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Lachimolala · 04/01/2021 22:17

Hello! @Loiis12345 I’ve had a name change since but yes 18 months on and my hair from all my hair loss has grown back and now shoulder length pretty much. I did have to brave the bob hairstyle which I’m not a fan off but it’s coming back thankfully. I think the hair loss tailed off around a year after but I can’t remember exactly. X

MamaPip · 04/01/2021 22:30

Mine started around the 6 months mark and is only getting to the stage I can shower and brush my hair without panic now at 11 months this is my second DC I don’t remember it being as bad last time !

Sceptre86 · 04/01/2021 22:41

Ds is three and it has only just stopped, maybe because I am pregnant again. Try perfection hair and nails, I found that it helped me. I also switched to washing my hair two times a week and not tying it up as often.

Sceptre86 · 04/01/2021 22:42

Perfectil not perfection

Loiis12345 · 04/01/2021 22:42

@Lachimolala that’s good to hear I bet your happy it’s ended now as it’s not nice is it I have waist length hair and it’s always been very thick Evan before pregnancy but my hair has gone very thin now which is bothering me alott I’m thinking of getting my hair cut but that won’t be until we come back out of lockdown 🤦🏻‍♀️ ... I didn’t know it was normal to lose hair from the crown or the back of your head I only hear people say around there temples! But since you said your hair was coming out from your crown it’s made me feel abit better I keep thinking I’m gonna lose all my hair ... god I need this to end x

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 04/01/2021 22:44

Sorry didn't experience this, hair grew like crazy during pregnancy and slowed a little bit after but no mass shedding, but then I have always been a very hairy person so there are down sides

MammaSchwifty · 04/01/2021 22:52

For me the shedding started at about 3 months and was mostly done around 6-7 months. Then the new hair grew in resulting in some interesting hairline floof, frizz, and mini fringe. Back to normal now at 18 months, and haven't really been aware of the regrowth for a few months now.

Loiis12345 · 04/01/2021 22:58

Is it normal to lose hair on the crown and back of the head as that’s where mine is bad at the min mine isn’t as bad as it was now I’m approaching 5.5 months postpartum but it’s still shedding I’m just getting paranoid when I’m out and about I feel like everyone can see the where I’m losing my hair 🤦🏻‍♀️ Good to know I’m not the only one going through this . I never knew this was a thing no one told me you lose hair after having a child x

KitKatastrophe · 04/01/2021 23:04

A few months. From around 4 months pp to 6 or 7 months. I have very very fine and thin hair anyway, and with the hair loss you could literally see my scalp and a bit white line down the parting. My baby is 9 months now and its growing back in stupid whispy clumps.

Loiis12345 · 04/01/2021 23:11

@KitKatastrophe that’s what mines like my Parton is not in a straight line anymore it’s all over the place because of the loss it’s so wide 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ivy455 · 04/01/2021 23:15

Try not to worry too much OP. I started shedding at 3 1/2 months pp and I lost around 2/3 of my hair, mostly around the front. It looked so so bad. It did stop, I think around 5-6 months pp, but then randomly started again when she was about one. I started taking Biotin supplements which helped a lot. She's two and a half now and it's growing back really well. I think it will be another couple of years before the length is as thick as it was before but I'm fine with that. I recommend Biotin and getting any scraggly ends chopped off.

Yes, I lost all my side fringe and it looked terrible. It's grown back though!
Loiis12345 · 04/01/2021 23:29

@Ivy455 that’s good to know thank you 😊 x
