Operation Yellowhammer. What have you noticed in your local area?

Half of a local, heavily used, road is being turned into a lorry park. If it has to be used as such, there will be a traffic jam from the South coast to London. I'm hoping sense will prevaIl and there won't be a 'No Deal let's go right now' in November but what's happening where you are?

longwayoff · 23/10/2019 10:33

Yes Mariana, that appears to be so. Hopefully it's correct and these expensive preparations will prove to be unnecessary. But Boris and Cummimgs? Who knows? Truth is not an essential when they're in charge.

A31, a few miles of which near Winchester has been altered with half the dual carriageway being allocated as a lorry park. This would be for traffic arriving via Portsmouth and Southampton

The holding areas in Hampshire are for outgoing HGVs, exporting to the EU, not for incoming vehicles (as far as I can make out).

"Preparatory work has been completed on a 5km stretch of the A31 dual carriageway between Winchester and Alresford to provide an area that may be needed for holding freight traffic waiting to use Portsmouth International Port for cross-channel services to France or Spain."
“We know that the biggest risk to Hampshire is the potential for traffic to back up on the road network caused by HGVs having to wait to access Portsmouth International Port, as a result of their documentation not being ‘border ready’."

it's the fact that these lorries carry the majority of food supplies for UK.

There should be far fewer hold-ups for lorries coming in to the UK - 95,000 businesses have just been registered for the government's simplified import procedures, "allowing most traders up to 6 months to pay import duties and submit customs declarations, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal on 31 October 2019."

Kent County Council's Brexit Preparedness Update 12 September:

"Kent County Council, working with its partners has taken responsible and timely actions to prepare for all eventualities, including a potential no-deal scenario.Kent has well-developed plans to ensure we minimise disruption to Kent’s residents and businesses."

"Kent’s no-deal plans have been in place since March 2019.We were prepared, if required, ahead of the previous no-deal deadline (31 March and 12 April 2019).Through close collaborative working with the Department for Transport and Kent Resilience Forum, we have a well-thought through, sensible and practical plan, “Operation Brock”, ready to go live at short notice. This will manage potential disruption and delay at the ports, enable Kent to hold up to 12,000 goods vehicles and, for the first time, keep all Kent roads open at all times. Should the 12,000 capacity be exceeded, the plan necessitates HGVs bound for mainland Europe to be held outside of the county."

"Kent is in a strong position to ensure the County Council can meet its statutory obligations, that Kent’s public services continue, communities are kept moving, and businesses can continue to trade."

Local news says there may be an 'increase in dogging'

Grin

Well that's a rather bracing approach to putting one's head in the sand. 'Shag away, Barbara, just pretend it's not happening!'

FizzyGreenWater · 23/10/2019 12:17

On a more sensible note, whatever happens it will be a shitshow and I have absolutely no expectations of anything being 'sorted' or under any sort of control.

An EU national friend voted in the last two General Elections as he was sent polling cards. No, he's not a British citizen or has ever pretended to be one, just registered as living at the address... honestly ridiculous.

easyandy101 · 23/10/2019 12:21

People really pretending gammon isn't an offensive term

Why do you think you call people gammon if it's not too be offensive? And linking it to mc umc wtf?

It's cheap meat, being used to describe wc people

Operation Yellowhammer. What have you noticed in your local area?
MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 23/10/2019 12:28

Mummyoflittledragon - Whichever section of society it is being used to label, I still find it an offensive expression.

Tartsamazeballs · 23/10/2019 12:28

Pipe down EasyAndy1. Gammon doesn't refer to white meat, it refers to the unhealthy pink-red colour that they turn when you tell them "immigrants get free houses and a daily allowance of £150" or "it's illegal not to be LGBTQ these days".

EssentialHummus · 23/10/2019 12:36

Gammon doesn’t refer to wc people - see link upthread.

Nothing round my corner of London (though we’re by the A2, so we’ll get some action when/if the time comes I guess). I have two friends working in roles where Brexit has a direct impact and both are working harder than ever afaik. And I’ve applied and gotten my settled status, though that isn’t Yellowhammer directly I guess.

ffswhatnext · 23/10/2019 13:00

I didn't know until this thread and read the link. From how its worded, its offensive to everyone.

As for the op, I can understand your concerns. Regardless of where you are in the country, you will be fucked if the lorries aren't moving. It's those that are further away who should be more worried because at least those closer to the end location of the lorries have a better chance of getting certain supplies.
Locally I have noticed over the past year food shortages at various points. I don't know the reasons why, but gave me a massive wake up when I walked into a supermarket in the middle of the week and day, to find no bread, milk and other things. Nowhere rural but a large city down south. And on more than one occasion has this happened.
I'm already caught up in the medication delays which I fear more than food shortages. At least there was time to prepare for food shortages. Hard to prepare for a medication shortage, as I cannot grow these.

easyandy101 · 23/10/2019 13:05

Quick search for gammon memes... Hmm

btw i'm a remainer if i had to call myself anything, but pretending that isn't a term designed to offend is ridiculous

EssentialHummus · 23/10/2019 13:11

It is a term designed to offend - it’s obviously derogatory - but not to offend the working class. There’s some conflation at play here I think.

Nyon · 23/10/2019 13:12

Surrey (my part):
loss of over 400 jobs as companies quietly move out. Have admitted to staff that it’s brexit based.
Local council desperately trying to identify ways of buying and storing food for the most vulnerable in the society. Currently banned from doing so.
Local councillors trying on social media to engage with people about ASB etc being told that after brexit they’ll be able to ‘treat these teenagers in the way they deserve’.
Local schools, both primary and secondary, acknowledging that they no longer have the money to help struggling families for things like food and uniform struggles after brexit can’t do it now when it isn’t quite so bad

Oh, and a poster yesterday on the brexit board who stated that price rises will force her to have to go hungry as she can to afford to absorb them. But you all focus on some idiot using offensive language instead of the issues. Coz it’s going to all be fiiiiiiiiiiine.

Parker231 · 23/10/2019 13:16

Reports indicate that EU countries are better prepared than the UK. I’m still hoping for a very long extension and then revoke. What services will be cut as a result of all the money wasted on Brexit now and in the future?

Raver84 · 23/10/2019 13:20

Operation brock is back on the m20 this weekend for anyone in Kent

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 23/10/2019 13:31

Up north too (being deliberately vague here), there's been significant official prep going on in the background.

longwayoff · 23/10/2019 14:06

I went into £land last week and it's usually crammed with cheaper food but, several empty shelves. Get my regular groceries online and have had more substitutes, or unavailable over the past 3 months or so. I've assumed this is due to people stockpiling but maybe Halloween date already affecting supply? If suppliers have prepared for 31 Oct, given Boris 's 'I'd rather Die in a Ditch' statement, then there are bound to be shortages, surely? Whichever, food prices are definitely going up.

OP posts:
longwayoff · 23/10/2019 14:12

Gammon is a term coined to both describe and offend the offensive. Works well on both fronts.

Sorting my subscribe and save things on amazon at the moment. Noticing changes there. It could just be them no longer working with different companies now, but stuff widely available a few weeks ago is no longer there or a big increase.

junecat · 23/10/2019 16:02

Nothing at all near me in rural north west. Just picked a repeat prescription up with no problem but I do know a few people who have been struggling to get HRT for a couple of months now.

LakieLady · 23/10/2019 16:36

I'm in Sussex and the A27 (part of the Folkestone - Honiton goat track trunk route) has loads of signs about the need for new paperwork.

Police leave has been cancelled, but there has been no sign of more plods on the streets!

@andyoldlabour how am I ‘trying to be innocent’? I hadn’t heard the term before and asked what made it offensive. No need to jump on me. Pretty sure my only crime is asking on the thread instead of just googling.
