Now it's getting colder am building up some winter insulation Blush .....The kids love a pudding after tea most nights its tinned fruit with a blob of cream or a yogurt or maybe a ice lolly. Some nights they surprise me completely and wont have one .....anyway what cheap puddings are nice easy and good on a budget.

Tonight we got a big swiss roll and sliced it up put it in a pyrex dish or similar and poured over a tin of custard and put in the oven for 20mins or so it was so so good feed all 4 of us and was 50p for swiss roll 50p for tin of custard....

AIBU to ask for your cheap family friendly puddings.

Rice pudding with a blob of jam or some nutmeg on top was always my favourite. Really cheap too!

IShitGlitter · 22/10/2019 18:41

Oh yes rice pud. Can you use risotto rice for it we always have that in?

Jelly

Angel delight (butterscotch and choc) layered up with crushed digestive biscuits. Bloody delish!

cwg1 · 22/10/2019 18:45

Eh - bless 'em Smile Haven't had them for years but baked apples are lovely in winter. Cooking apples. Core them and fill with mincemeat. Serve with cream or custard. Crumble also very cheap and easy.

Stewed fruit - we just had pear and plum with a sprinkling of cinnamon. It’s really out of fashion at the moment, but makes the most rock hard of fruit into something good to eat.

Daffodil2018 · 22/10/2019 18:52

Bread and butter pudding is cheap and cheerful. I also love bananas and custard.

Blueshadow · 22/10/2019 18:54

Pancakes are fab too - a mug of milk, one of flour and an egg all mixed up, should give enough batter for one each.

PrivateSpidey · 22/10/2019 18:54

I was going to say baked apples as well, yum. Sometimes we do a syrup sponge pudding, just put some golden syrup in the bottom of your baking dish and then a basic sponge cake mixture over and bake - so nice with custard.

Your Swiss roll pudding sounds good OP.

Mug cake?
Done in the microwave in 30 seconds.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/10/2019 18:57

Mug cakes (kids love making them). Make a cake batter and get them to pour in a mug - they can add anything from chocolate chips to blueberry or frozen fruit. Then zap the cake in the microwave in the mug for about 5 minutes. Cool a bit and then perfect gooey cake

Crabbitstick · 22/10/2019 18:58

Steamed pudding. Sponge mix, jam/honey/syrup at bottom of bowl. Warm, yummy and just adjust recipe to size of bowl to suit size needed.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/10/2019 18:58

I don't I must have bigger mugs

Shoutymomma · 22/10/2019 19:00

Or what we call Vivienne’s lemon pudding.

TheABC · 22/10/2019 19:01

Apple crumble is surprisingly easy to make and if you do a double batch, you can freeze the unbaked portion.

IShitGlitter · 22/10/2019 19:02

How could I forget jelly! And angel delight...am going to get a good layer of insulation this year Grin

Baked Jam Roll - loved it as a kid. Mine still do.

Digestive biscuit, soft cheese and lemon curd or jam of choice - instant cheesecakes.

CAG12 · 22/10/2019 19:07

Bananas and creamy custard! Cant beat it

Brigante9 · 22/10/2019 19:07

Twist on a baked apple. Core apples, wrap with puff pastry, fill with chocolate pieces, press pastry onto tray at the bottom so no chocolate escapes.

Apple sponge. Slice peeled apples thinly into base of greased tin. Mix 8oz flour, sugar, marg plus 4 eggs with electric mixer, pour over apples (be fancy, sprinkle cinnamon over the apples first!) Bake for 40 minutes on gas mark 4, check with skewer after 20 minutes. Serve with custard/vanilla ice cream.

Flour=45p a bag in Asda.

Chrestomanci3 · 22/10/2019 19:09

Tinned peach halves in an oven-proof bowl. Crumble up a couple of ameretti biscuits, add a bit of cinnamon and brown sugar, pour over a bit of the juice from the peaches. Cook for about 15 min and enjoy.

missyB1 · 22/10/2019 19:11

For a cheat one, box of Mr Kiplings apple and blackberry pies, they are often on offer in Asda. Have them warmed up with ice cream or custard.

Pollaidh · 22/10/2019 19:11

Rice pudding, bread and butter pudding, scotch pancakes, stewed pears
