I love how wetpants gets all humphy with me because I point out some of her (many) mistakes, yet it's ok for her to scattergun a thread ripping other people's English apart.
So it's only OK to do it behind people's backs then, not to their face, as it were? Cowardly as well as spiteful

Charming.
As Lying says, we ALL notice glaring mistakes on social media We ALL wonder at times how people can possibly think that X is the correct spelling for Y.
The difference is it takes a special kind of nasty to find it funny to have a list of mistakes that people less educated, not as intelligent etc make.
What if these were your kids and some clever cloggs at school were making a public list on Snapchat of all their mistakes?

I'd also like wetpants's interpretation of "maybe this thread isn't for you" if it's not her trying to get the thread back on its smug piss-taking track?

IWillJustKeepQuietThen · 25/10/2019 18:53

My friend writes 'altfit' instead of outfit.? Yet knows how it's spelt.

SingingLily · 25/10/2019 19:01

Wetpants hasn't made "many mistakes". Any that she has made are, in my view, quite excusable. After all, she has already said she is not a native English speaker and I think on that basis alone, she should be given some latitude.

Otherwise, it would be verging on xenophobia and I'm sure that isn't the intention.

Pursefirst · 25/10/2019 19:04

Just saw someone giving out on FB about the possibility of getting exposed to "sam and ella." Since it was a food related post, I'm going to assume they meant salmonella.

Poor Sam and Ella

TheCanterburyWhales · 25/10/2019 19:05

How do you know all those people you're all mocking aren't non-native speakers or dyslexic?

TheCanterburyWhales · 25/10/2019 19:07

Incidentally, making mistakes in your own English when criticising other people is usually more down to Muphry than to being a non-native speaker. Wink

CravingCheese · 25/10/2019 19:23

How do you ascertain that the person you're mocking is indeed a native speaker? I myself am (as I previously mentioned) not a native speaker and I certainly don't add a disclaimer every time I post.

I'm fairly certain that people with dyslexia don't add disclaimers before every post or comment either...

SingingLily · 25/10/2019 19:30

I'm not mocking anyone, CravingCheese, but what I am is increasingly uncomfortable about one poster being singled out when hundreds have contributed to this thread.

If people are unhappy with this thread, fair enough, but they should report the thread, not target one person who has posted in good faith.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 25/10/2019 19:36

Agree Singing.

If you've a problem with a post report it. Simple.

Some of you must be bloody exhausted if you invest this level of energy in policing all MN threads to this degree.

CravingCheese · 25/10/2019 19:41

How have I targeted a person who posted in good faith?

CravingCheese · 25/10/2019 19:44

Anyhow. Or maybe that wasn't aimed at me... (seeing as I'm fairly certain that I didn't intentionally single out one poster amongst many.)

wetpants · 25/10/2019 20:01

You are deliberately missing my point and coming across a little unhinged canterbury and the whatshershisname. Being so gleeful about me missing a capital letter Grin I’ve made my point, I can’t help it if you and few others aren’t getting it. Maybe my English is really shit BlushGrin

Singing and tellme Flowers thank fuck for the common sense

wetpants · 25/10/2019 20:07

purse that can’t be real Shock sam and ella?! There must be some kind of gremlin who has twisted the word salmonella without the person noticing it.

Shoutymomma · 25/10/2019 20:11

I know someone who says “self explannery”.

missmouse101 · 25/10/2019 20:24

The more these basic mistakes go uncorrected, the more it all gets dumbed down and as a depressing consequence, even more people think that is the right way to write, spell and punctuate.

Language conveys precise meaning, thoughts, instructions etc. It is amusing when you get it wrong! That is how this thread came about. It can also be downright dangerous or create serious misunderstandings.

It is very important indeed. It's not about 'mocking'.

RusholmeRuffian · 25/10/2019 20:47

I have just seen someone on Facebook moaning about the fireworks for "Dovarley". Sounds more like a country village than a Hindu festival.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 25/10/2019 21:02

I once wrote in a work email the awful typo "...the thong to remember is ..."!

Recipients included fairly senior managers. Mortified I was Confused

youkiddingme · 25/10/2019 22:40

My spelling and grammar used to be at least average. After an accident left me with brain damage, I am aware it is now pretty awful at times. I try very hard to check it, but it is arduous and I'm sure I miss a lot of errors.
I can feel quite self-conscious when I see these kinds of threads, particularly as they often appear on face book as well as on here. Having said that I do find some of the malapropisms (thanks google) funny in themselves.
I think it depends if you are laughing at what is said, or at who is saying it.
But sneeringly assuming someone is too lazy to bother is just rude.

bluebluezoo · 26/10/2019 09:06

I’m on a couple of local fb groups and unless 99% of the population have dyslexia, brain injuries, or english as a second language then it is down to lack of education.

Thing is, if it were one post amongst many, you’d have a giggle to yourself and move on. It’s not. These errors are becoming the norm - I see chester draws all the time, I can’t remember ever seeing Chest of Drawers.

I am struggling to understand and almost have to actively translate written language these days.

It’s also fairly easy to see where people have esl or are dyslexic vs those who are writing phonetically or have never learned to write legibly. Esl writers tend to make errors with grammar or sentence structure, but the meaning is still clear. Dyslexics can also communicate a meaning, just in a more jumbled way.

But when you find yourself reading posts out aloud in several accents to try and make sense of it before giving up, or looking at a word thinking what in earth do they mean because they’ve just made up the spelling- makes me sad.

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/10/2019 09:23

Wetpants in my classroom Sam and Ella sit next to each other, but I have never seen it on Facebook spelt in that way.

Poppyfields21 · 26/10/2019 11:03

On another thread I’ve just seen someone write ‘per say’, and another poster on the same thread ‘I would advice’

Basketofkittens · 26/10/2019 11:25

How do people, who cannot use correct grammar and spelling, find jobs? Confused

I was doing a sift recently for an admin role and most of the applications were riddled with errors. No doubt these are the same people who apply for “hundreds” of jobs and complain they don’t even get interviews.

gymraes · 26/10/2019 12:06

Besides the errors of the potential applicants, hope your 'sift' went well!Smile
