AIBU to ask how you can wear wool?

We moved house recently and our new house is coooold! Proper wind whistling through the gaps in every window in every room. Desperation led me to the warmth of John Lewis and in search of a warm jumper. Quick scout round - picked up anything chunky which wasn't screaming Christmas. After 10 minutes in the changing room, I had scratched my arms and neck raw, had alpaca fluff in my eyelashes, cashmere stuck to my lips and my eyes were streaming. Toast we're charging £175 for this hell.
Anyone else???

Boise of Scotland do a lovely soft and non itchy wool. They also have a sale on now.

Bluerussian · 21/10/2019 22:40

I can't wear wool next to my skin either. I believe there are wool products that are treated in some way to prevent the itching.
Cashmilon is good, it's synthetic but looks and feels like cashmere without any itch.

LemonPrism · 21/10/2019 22:41

I have eczema... wool is the devil.

LemonPrism · 21/10/2019 22:42

Cashmere and merino are not scratchy but they're so bloody thickly

LemonPrism · 21/10/2019 22:42

Tickly*

MadamePewter · 21/10/2019 22:45

YANBU. I hate it too.

MadamePewter · 21/10/2019 22:46

And I think cashmere and merino are itchy too

RosaRi · 21/10/2019 22:49

I can’t wear wool either, it drives me insane

TheVanguardSix · 21/10/2019 22:49

Celtic and Co!
They do lovely soft wool jumpers. Gorgeous. I live in their jumpers until they're threadbare.
Wear a long-sleeved silk or thermal top underneath to lock in warmth.

Blibbyblobby · 21/10/2019 22:51

try merino stuff - it's more like cotton jersey than wool.

PickAChew · 21/10/2019 22:54

Cheap alpaca is full of guard hairs and really scratchy.

Merino and blue faced Leicester are lovely, soft and wRm.

Troels · 21/10/2019 22:54

Oh god no, wool makes me rip my skin off.
Long sleeve cotton tops with fleece over the top is as much as I can wear in the cold.
I walked up Snowdon the other day and had one of Dd's base layers for skiing and a fleece hoody. Very comfy, I had a waterproof for part of the walk too.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/10/2019 22:55

I wear cashmere or silk or cotton jumpers. Everything else makes me itch like crazy. Damn my body has expensive tastes. Although no reaction to a 100% manmade £9.99 jumper from Tesco. Blush So now I wear Tesco jumpers and keep away from anything flammable or wear something bloody expensive that I'm terrified of ruining.

Failing that, long sleeved polo necks underneath anything made of merino so it doesn't touch my delicate flesh. Confused

NearlyGranny · 21/10/2019 22:55

I can assess the presence and percentage of wool in any cloth pretty reliably just by touching it to my cheek. I once had a beautiful polo necked sweater I could not wear without tearing my neck to shreds with my nails...

34leaper35 · 21/10/2019 22:57

@NearlyGranny haha! I think I can do this too!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 21/10/2019 22:59

I can't wear it against my bare skin, need a layer in between. Could you wear hick thermals under it?

People claim that cashmere is itch proof but they lie.

Wheat2Harvest · 21/10/2019 22:59

I love wearing wool and am surprised that some people seem not to know how to wear it. You don't wear wool next to the skin unless it's designed to be worn that way (a woolly vest, for example, which I'm sure everyone on here wears).

The best thing is a long-sleeved blouse with a collar, which can be kept tucked in or displayed.

NearlyGranny · 21/10/2019 23:00

Though I do have an exquisite cobwebby merino scarf that I can wear. It's a crafted piece with natural botanical leaf prints in autumnal colours on cream, from an Australian art gallery shop. It never itches but it cost 3 figures. Another one whose skin has expensive tastes. 😳

Bananapancakes3 · 21/10/2019 23:00

I'm the same! My mum loves merino and keeps trying to get me to wear it but I hate it! Have always found wool scratchy

Pardonwhat · 21/10/2019 23:02

This thread has made me feel itchy and sick.

My mum used to dress my in wool tights shudders

Pardonwhat · 21/10/2019 23:03

Wheat2Harvest

I got bought a lovely wool dress once.
How do I wear something underneath that other than tights?

Lockheart · 21/10/2019 23:05

Some wool is scratchy, some is not.

I have one jumper (a Christmas present) which I cannot stand to wear as it's itchy even with a long sleeve top.

But then again I have wonderful wooly tights, tweed jackets and gorgeous soft jumpers.

I think wool is fantastic and supremely versatile.

lumpy76 · 21/10/2019 23:06

Can't wear any wool product AT ALL! Not even cashmere - was bought a cashmere scarf once...gave it away! Not anything at all with any wool in it. i can't even stand the edge of a cuff or collar so even putting something underneath would be a problem. Viscose, cotton and polyester (dependent on the weave) is all I can wear.

Lockheart · 21/10/2019 23:07

@Pardonwhat very easily - you simply get a t-shirt, or a vest top, or a long sleeved top. Whatever fits with the dresses style and shape.

Unless it's summer and too hot I always wear something under my dresses, and none of them are wool!

ffswhatnext · 21/10/2019 23:07

Wearing something underneath only works if the sleeve is longer than the jumper. Even then you aren't guaranteed to be itch-free as it needs to get over the head.
But it's not just jumpers, its hats, scarfs, gloves, coats, socks etc.
