AIBU to ask how you can wear wool?

We moved house recently and our new house is coooold! Proper wind whistling through the gaps in every window in every room. Desperation led me to the warmth of John Lewis and in search of a warm jumper. Quick scout round - picked up anything chunky which wasn't screaming Christmas. After 10 minutes in the changing room, I had scratched my arms and neck raw, had alpaca fluff in my eyelashes, cashmere stuck to my lips and my eyes were streaming. Toast we're charging £175 for this hell.
Anyone else???

I cannot even think about it - your post has made my blood run cold (is that the expression where you shudder?). Awful. I can’t have wool at all. No blankets, the children can’t wear wool because it’s absolutely awful for me to even think about let alone touch. My body is freezing and shuddering just at the thought of wearing or touching wool.

Cotton blended with 10% cashmere isn’t too expensive. I’ve bought men’s jumpers like that in M&S for about £40. They’re non itchy and noticeably warmer than just cotton.
I’ll see if I can find any women’s versions.
Personally I’m hankering after a really intricate Aran cardigan- I can almost smell the sheep!

EgremontRusset · 21/10/2019 22:19

Cashmere only, dahling!
Angora is the devil’s work

ratsnest · 21/10/2019 22:22

This thread is making me feel itchy. I can't even wear cashmere but normal wool feels like I'm on fire

Sotoes · 21/10/2019 22:23

Wool should stay where it belongs, on sheep, or lining bird's nests.

ratsnest · 21/10/2019 22:24

Even with a cotton layer underneath. The fibres are all pokey pokey pokey, argh.

speakout · 21/10/2019 22:24

I am the same OP.

I don't wear wollen clothes.
My knits are all cotton.
Much nicer.

theWarOnPeace · 21/10/2019 22:26

I pity you all! For me, wearing real wool and cashmere is one of life’s pleasures. I love getting it all back out in the winter. Which is basically now!

34leaper35 · 21/10/2019 22:26

@glueandstick I'm not against other fabrics - I just find that they're not so smart and I can never quite pull off the look I'm going for!

It makes me scratch so avoid it.

Sgtmajormummy · 21/10/2019 22:27

Nothing on M&S but this came up on Google.www.wooloverslondon.com/cashmere?page=1&fabric=5

34leaper35 · 21/10/2019 22:27

@Happyspud do you have a little eyelash comb to brush the fur out with? X X

@Theredjellybean thanks for the tip - I'll have a look!

Uniqlo Marino wool is gorgeous, nothing spikey about it, it has a sheen. I layer it over a vest top, silk camisole and/or a t shirt depending on the weather. Cashmere's lovely but does bobble. My favourites are men's jumpers pinched from DH, they seem thicker than my own.

CharDeeMacDennis · 21/10/2019 22:30

I'm quite sensitive and do find it itchy, but fine with a longsleeved cotton top underneath. I'm addicted to the warmth of real wool and cashmere. I find it the same kind of bone-deep cosiness you have when you wake up curled in the duvet in the morning.

I have to avoid anything with a high neck, but other than that, I'm good to go, and like PPS, really look forward to wearing my wool when the weather gets cold.

Leflic · 21/10/2019 22:31

There’s wool and wool.

I love the smooth knit, heaviness of a jersey jumper. Can also do fel and cashmere.

Not keen on angora. Or rough sheep wool.

34leaper35 · 21/10/2019 22:31

@ifeellikeanidiot I agree about non-natural fibres - don't even get me started on an acrylic/alpaca mix - my armpits prickle at the thought

I always wear something under a wool sweater, although it doesn’t irritate me. Could you wear a fleece? I find that fleece doesn’t keep me warm but most people I know find fleece is warm.

CharDeeMacDennis · 21/10/2019 22:31

Oh, and wool socks - bliss 😄

newroundhere · 21/10/2019 22:32

Me too - any sort of wool I find really itchy, merino is the least bad but even then I have to layer and I know that I'm wearing it iyswim. I wish I could, wooly jumpers always look so cosy!

It's nice to find fellow sufferers, my family always make me feel like I'm being unreasonably difficult for avoiding wool!

Choufleur · 21/10/2019 22:32

No it’s the stuff of the devil. And if you have to wear full length shirts under a jumper to stop it itching you is it really worth it.

Lunafortheloveogod · 21/10/2019 22:34

Ah never buy anything wooly without trying it on first.. or rubbing the inside against bare skin.. ideally your cheek/inner arm somewhere sensitive that it’ll touch. Fleece is a good in the house alternative.. ain’t as fashionable but by fuck I’ve never faced cheese grater fleece.

AgentCooper · 21/10/2019 22:35

I’m not usually good with wool either but soft merino is fine. Got a lovely blue merino jumper from M&S recently. Other than that most of my big jumpers are thick cotton yarn.

RadicalFern · 21/10/2019 22:35

Try getting silk thermals. They go under everything and keep you toasty warm.

ffswhatnext · 21/10/2019 22:36

I love mens clothing as well. Their basic things seem much comfier. Plus sizing is bloody simpler. None of this my size varies hugely in different stores, order a small or whatever from anywhere and job done 😂
