..to ask for some help w/ regards to mother of the bride outfit?

I'm getting married in March and I'm struggling to find an outfit for my mother to wear. She has a long history of self-harming so her arms and legs can't be on show (through her own choice, not mine).
Everywhere I've looked has dresses or suits with 3/4 sleeves or short sleeve/strappy clothing. I'm at a loss on what to do.. any ideas, please?

How old is she? What size? (Why can't she sort herself out?)

Would this be any good?

She's 52. She's never done online shopping (can just about send a text) and doesn't have the confidence to go into stores herself, so I'm trying to give her ideas. Thank you, that's actually really pretty.

That is a really lovely dress.

Apolloanddaphne · 21/10/2019 19:52

Have look at Phase Eight. They seem to have lots of dresses with long sleeves.

Laska2Meryls · 21/10/2019 19:56

would she wear a jumpsuit?

or a skirt and top combo

Laska2Meryls · 21/10/2019 19:59

or this?

or with lace sleeves

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 21/10/2019 20:08

Look for frock coats. My mum wore a shift dress with a gorgeous full length sleeved frock coat which buttoned once in the middle

VerbenaGirl · 21/10/2019 20:08

Long sleeved jumpsuits always look so elegant, or something like this: www.oliverbonas.com/fashion/floral-print-pussy-bow-red-midi-dress-252018#selection.color=Pink

What is her size? what is the budget? What sort of wedding (traditional, small or destination etc)?

YeOldeTrout · 21/10/2019 20:14

body shape info? Height & weight & type of shape (I mean like hour glass or pear or apple, etc.)

TheMasterBaker · 21/10/2019 20:14

My Mum wore a floor length, strappy black and white dress with a long sleeved crochet type black cardigan. She did ask me many times if it was ok to wear black to my wedding. I said as long as you don't turn up in a wedding dress, I don't really care :D It may be easier to find a delicate long sleeved cardi or shrug to go over a short sleeved or strappy dress?

hauntedvagina · 21/10/2019 20:16

Look at the John Lewis website, filter by occasion, size, budget, style and sleeve length. I had a quick look and there are around 150 full length, long sleeved wedding guest dresses.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 21/10/2019 20:18

Or these...

Slightly longer skirt and opaque tights? They don't have to be black, a pale colour can still be opaque. March has a chance of being cold so it won't look out of place.

If you Google "trouser suit mother of the bride" the options and images nearly all have full long sleeves

There are absolutely loads on Amazon, just search 'mother of bride dresses'. Good luck!

Wurfit · 21/10/2019 20:38

There are some lovely long-sleeved midi dresses around at the mo ( example here ), which would look lovely with knee boots and a coordinating bag. Bear in mind she'll have a corsage of some sort.
I'm not far off your mum's age OP and I wouldn't wish most of what gets tagged "mother of the bride" on my own mil, let alone myself.

lljkk · 21/10/2019 21:19

I'm 52. I'd insist on staying at home if you tried to put me into a jumpsuit.

This is very pretty, could wear with high denier tights if concerned about the bit of legs on show.

Wurfit · 22/10/2019 10:04

lljkk I tried on (and bought) a black jumpsuit recent to wear on holiday and was pleasantly surprised at how good I look in it. It's floaty jersey fabric and really comfy, looks a bit smarter than an equivalent maxi dress, especially with flashy earrings, but it's not really weddingy.

That dress you've linked to is lovely. Some suede knee boots (loads around at the mo) with a matching bag could work really well with it for someone keen to avoid the Queen Mother with sequins thing that people seem to think might appeal to women in their 50s.

Chillisauceboss · 22/10/2019 10:07

Where are you based / could you travel to? Lots of lovely independent boutiques I know

grannieali · 03/11/2019 17:48

After much thought, I bought a navy jumpsuit with moderately wide legs and a contrasting jacket to go over it as mother of the groom. I was 80, 5ft. 9ins. and fairly slim. No fiddling with tucking in or out at the waist. I have to wear ankle boots all the time because of damaged ankles so some outfit with trousers is really essential, and with flat heels. I added a small brimmed boater and trimmed it with net and navy flowers. However when I got to the wedding, NOBODY was wearing a hat, not even the mother of the bride, so I dumped it. Warning: the trouser suit has a back zip and it is impossible to pull it up without help. I asked my niece to accompany me to the loo! This was quite a posh country wedding with marquee reception in grounds of a Georgian manor.

I love those floaty long sleeved dresses. I’m 53 and I’d feel lovely in one of those. I wouldn’t leave the house in that JD Williams number - I’d look like my granny!
