Terry and June and other sitcoms in similar genre

I used to love this program and felt that this was the template for sitcoms if it's time and everything else was a variation on a theme - anyone remember the sitcom with Judi Dench playing opposite her real life husband - i think she sang the theme tune (before this became a joke in Littelt Britain) . Am I BU in being nostalgic for the days of this kind of TV - do you think these kind of progs would seem a bit dated now?

Very dated but very good!

Symptomless · 20/10/2019 10:42

I find a lot of the US sitcoms very safe and formulaic, a group of friends or family getting into mild mishaps and all is well after 20 mins (+ ad breaks).

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 10:43

yes Synptomless Cheers / Friends /Frazier

Out of that list don't remember City Lights - I think Bit of a Do was different as had no laughter track

The Good Life is still funny. DS(13) loves Porridge, The Two Ronnies, Dads' Army etc.

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 10:48

Yes that's it - Fine Romance

A bit of a do was genius!

I also love The Good Life

MrsGrindah · 20/10/2019 10:51

Life without George! I loved that . I thought that was going to be me when I grew up..living in a flat on my own, having a complicated love life...

Drabarni · 20/10/2019 10:51

I think The Good life is brilliant, it always makes me laugh, still.
The Christmas not being delivered for Margo is my favourite.
terry and June, was a classic as was George and Mildred.

MrsGrindah · 20/10/2019 10:52

Fresh Fields....saw an episode by chance the other day...my god it’s dire now

mintyroller · 20/10/2019 10:52

A wee bit later but not that much, Waiting For God. I loved Diana. 2 Point 4 Children as well.

I do think TV in general was a lot better in days gone by I was thinking this as I was flicking through my hundreds of virgin media channels yesterday trying to find something worth watching ,Teas maids, did exist my Grandparents had one!

daisychain01 · 20/10/2019 10:55

Anything starring Wendy Craig was guaranteed to be gentle humour, safe and never tried too hard to be fashionable or 'edgy', it was funny for its own sake.

MrsGrindah · 20/10/2019 10:55

Yes I remember The Cuckoo Waltz

Solo was in a similar vein to Life Without George

We had a teasmade when we lived in a grotty studio flat (late 70s/1980). No heating so in the winter months it was lovely not having to get out of bed to get a cuppa

PIL ended up with it.
