Terry and June and other sitcoms in similar genre

I used to love this program and felt that this was the template for sitcoms if it's time and everything else was a variation on a theme - anyone remember the sitcom with Judi Dench playing opposite her real life husband - i think she sang the theme tune (before this became a joke in Littelt Britain) . Am I BU in being nostalgic for the days of this kind of TV - do you think these kind of progs would seem a bit dated now?

'Bless this house', starring sid James. They made a feature film of it as well. 'The likely lads', and the even better 'Whatever happened to the likely lads'.
The exterior shots for Terry and June were filmed around Sutton and Cheam. I lived in the area at the time and used to love spotting familiar places. I love watching all these old programmes because they are such an interesting snapshot of styles and attitudes of the time.

I loved Don't Wait Up and Just Good Friends mainly because of having stonking great adolescent crushes on Nigel Havers and Paul Nicholas.

Loved The Good Life. Quintessential British sitcom.

I don't remember Butterflies being gentle either. I was only young but remember Ria slamming down plates a lot, her aura of intense frustration and unhappiness and of course the affair(?) with creepy Leonard. I can't recall if it was an actual affair, or building up to one.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 20/10/2019 12:30

It was what would be called an ‘emotional affair’ today.

Charley1988 My PIL had a teasmade ! loved it (they were similar to T and J as well!

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/10/2019 12:33

When I need comfort food telly I watch Whatever happened to the likely lads on YouTube The 2 voices (Bob and Terry) will forever take me back to Monday night, milk and biscuits before bedtime.
The Good Life too.
I rewatched Dinnerladies the other week, which despite being 20 years younger than the GL and LL is just as dated in its own way

Outnumbered started off brilliantly, but as the children got older was cringingly bad. They should have stopped while it was at its height rather than dragging it out

I think Porridge and Only Fools stand the test Simple one liners. Brilliant.

phlebasconsidered · 20/10/2019 12:40

Joking Apart was excellent. It's never repeated but it should be.

Some happy memories being brought back here! We had neighbours that my parents nicknamed Howard and Hilda.

Anyone remember Executive Stress and You Must Be The Husband? I always get blank faces whenever I bring them up to anyone in real life. Used to love them both although I'm guessing both wouldn't have aged well.

Elderflower14 · 20/10/2019 12:56

Bread.... " SHE IS A TART" 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 13:06

I love the idea of a uni degree course called sitcom studies which would explore many themes including why on earth are these sitcoms always so Home Counties based

George & Mildred still makes me laugh.

ConfCall · 20/10/2019 13:11

Which current(ish) UK sitcoms will still be enjoyed in the 2030s?

Gavin and Stacey?
Inbetweeners?
Friday Night Dinner?
Peep Show?

weeblefeet · 20/10/2019 13:14

I watched Allo Allo recently and still found it really funny

Proseccoagain · 20/10/2019 13:15

The Drama channel has just shown the whole series of Waiting for God, absolutely brilliant.
Also loved
The Good Life
Butterflies
As Time Goes By
The Likely Lads
Dad's Army
Terry and June
To the Manor Born
And yes, I am old enough to remember All Gas and Gaiters!

Don't bother with modern sitcoms; not a patch on the above.

Wildthyme · 20/10/2019 13:18

No one's mentioned 'Allo 'Allo.

I loved that so much when I was a kid. Imagine making a comedy about Nazis today.

Proseccoagain · 20/10/2019 13:18

Ooh, I forgot Just Good Friends and Ever Decreasing Circles. Both excellent. Have box set of Ever Decreasing Circles.

Wildthyme · 20/10/2019 13:19

Ha, just as I lamented, someone has mentioned it Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/10/2019 13:23

The fall and rise of Reginald Perrin was genius.
I loved Hancock’s half hour and Steptoe and Son too. I’m old but not old enough to have seen lots of these first time round but they must have been repeated quite a bit.

Does anyone else remember get some in, I bought it on dvd a couple of years ago as It reminded of our family sitting in the front room with mugs ovaltine and a roaring coal fire.

1066vegan · 20/10/2019 13:46

The best old comedies still hold up because of the quality of the writing eg Fawlty Towers or The Good Life.

Others are mostly funny but still have moments that make me cringe now eg some of the sexist and homophobic lines in Porridge or The Two Ronnies.

Others that I thought were hilarious as a kid, I look at now and wonder how I could be so unaware of the racist caricatures eg It Ain't Half Hot, Mum or Mind Your Language.

MrsGrindah · 20/10/2019 13:46

I remember Executive Stress!

Does anyone remember one about a dad who was a comic illustrator? He always had a puppet of a lion on his hand? He had two grown up daughters..it’s driving me mad trying to think of the name.

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 20/10/2019 13:49

Three up two down, yes minister and yes prime minister.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 20/10/2019 13:50

I loved George & Mildred, Steptoe & Son, and On The Buses. Also Only When I Laugh!

MuddlingMackem · 20/10/2019 13:59

Agony, with Maureen Lipman is one I remember watching.

And a previous poster mentioned Take the High Road, I loved watching that for the couple of years I was at college, used to catch it on my half day. Grin
