Terry and June and other sitcoms in similar genre

I used to love this program and felt that this was the template for sitcoms if it's time and everything else was a variation on a theme - anyone remember the sitcom with Judi Dench playing opposite her real life husband - i think she sang the theme tune (before this became a joke in Littelt Britain) . Am I BU in being nostalgic for the days of this kind of TV - do you think these kind of progs would seem a bit dated now?

That's the one. Did Terry Scott and June Whitfield do another sitcome before Terry and June. Also which was the one with Harold and Hilda in matching knitwear?

nakedavengeragain · 20/10/2019 11:26

That's my boy.
Sorry!

Both dreadful now but The 7 year old me thought they were great.

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:26

Bit off topic of sitcoms but v popular around the same time were quiz shows such as

Winner Takes All with Jimmy Tarbuck (I think we have a difference of opinion Geoffrey ...)
Also Punchlines with Lennie Bennett

With Harold and Hilda that is.

funnylittlefloozie · 20/10/2019 11:28

On The Buses is still getting repeated... and although i loved it 30+ years ago, its totally cringy now. Dads Army is still fantastic, as are The Good Life, Citizen Smith, To The Manor Born, Only When I Laugh...

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:28

naked thing is - I still think they're great!!!!

I loved Butterflies, Sorry (Ronnie Corbett), To the Manor Born, A Sharp Intake of Breath (David Jason) and lots of others but I almost don’t want to see them again just in case they don’t stand up and it spoils my memories of them. I do occasionally see a bit of Are You Being Served? on Gold and do have a snigger still. A slightly more recent, and bitter sweet one was Sensitive Skin with Joanna Lumley.

weeblefeet · 20/10/2019 11:29

Did anyone understand 321 with Ted Rogers and Dusty Bin ???

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:29

For the sociologists out there I used to think it was funny how Terry and June portrayed working class people!!!

ITV3 and Drama often show some of these old sitcoms. There are many I enjoy in a nostalgic way, but that I now realise weren’t particularly funny. One I did rewatch recently and thought held up really well was After Henry. Once you’ve suspended your disbelief at the idea of Prunella Scales being 42 (she was 57 in real life), you find a very witty sitcom that does a brilliant job of portraying female family relationships - pretty impressive given it was written by a man.

EggysMom · 20/10/2019 11:29

That was 'Ever Decreasing Circles'. I loved that show, DM and I still share jokes about people in 'howard & hilda jumpers' Grin

weeblefeet · 20/10/2019 11:30

Used to watch Gems when I was off school I'll at my grans. She loved Take the High Road

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:30

Ill not I'll

Pandaintheporridge · 20/10/2019 11:31

I enjoyed terry and June at the time, but looking back what stands out for me was the enormous fuss when June wanted to get a job, and also her desperate desire for a mink coat (which I thought was off even back then).
Some were very sad really - cheating men, or the men who lived with their mums.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/10/2019 11:31

LIZS oh yeah, Happy Ever After, is forgotten about that. Also I didn’t realise Terry and June was on until 1987!

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:31

Talking about 'Decreasing Circles' and the like why is it that this genre of divine is invariably set in the Home Counties???

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:32

Also if I describe an area of town as 'a bit Terry and June' what image would that conjure up?

EggysMom · 20/10/2019 11:32

Anybody remember the less successful comedies, like Come Back Mrs Noah (Mollie Sugden) and The Happy Apple (Leslie Ash)?

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 11:34

Panda do you mean Sorry ??!
