Long time lurker but this is my first post. Asking out of curiosity as my DS is fine at the moment and I will ring his paediatrician for advice on Monday. Anyway...
DS (3y9m) has since he was 18 months old been waking in the night screaming and sweating. He is seen by a paediatrician for other concerns so we mentioned it to her and she said probably nightmares/night terrors. Fine, and we have been living with it ever since. These happen at least once a night.
A couple of weeks ago we found out he had low IGF-1 so awaiting a referral to endocrinology.
But this is where my suspicions were raised... on Friday he was sent home from nursery because he was clammy and crying, saying that his head hurt. He has had recent major skull surgery so I picked him straight up. He went home and played as normal for about an hour, no more mention of his head hurting. After about an hour he suddenly deteriorated, shaking, sweating, pale and clammy, said he wanted something to eat. I made him something to eat but he wouldn’t touch it (this is not like him at all, even when he has D&V he still wants to eat, and after his recent surgery he got upset when the nurse took his chips away after he was sick all over them 😂). He wanted to lie on the sofa, again this is not like him even during illness. He lay there for about 15 mins, occasionally sitting up and getting distressed asking for a cuddle. During this time I had rang the doctors worried that there was a complication from surgery and managed to get him an emergency appointment an hour later. After 15 mins he decided he wanted to try his dinner again, ate it all and has been fine ever since! I felt like a complete fraud taking him in the docs especially when his temperature and all the other checks were fine.
So my question is, does this sound like hypoglycaemia and if so, could it be caused by low IGF-1 rather than diabetes?
