To report this antisocial behaviour (smoking weed) to police

I'm fed up of people smoking weed around the local tube station. I commute 5 days a week on the tube and sometimes use it at weekends. Walking to and from the station, within metres of it, people smoke weed and I'm sick of it. The smell is vile and groups of people hanging around smoking is intimidating when not in a crowd of commuters. I'm also 5 months pregnant so really don't want to be breathing in their secondhand cannabis smoke.

I want to report it to the police and ask them to do something about this behaviour. Should I just let it go or am I being reasonable to act on what I feel I should do to try and put a stop to this? DH doesn't think anything will be done by local police (bigger fish to fry) ........being a police officer himself. Would I be wasting time and effort?

I'm so mad. If these people want to smoke weed then they should do it in their own homes and screw their own lives up but not impact on others.

I can understand your annoyance, but I don’t think the police are likely to do much unless there’s dealing etc going on.

araiwa · 19/10/2019 17:12

a police officer has told you it would be a waste of time

why dont you listen?

multiplemum3 · 19/10/2019 17:22

So ignore your husbands professional opinion but go to mumsnet for the answer? Lol ok

Drabarni · 19/10/2019 17:26

If you can smell it then I'm damn sure Police can. They aren't bothered as it's pretty low down on the list.
Not much you can do tbh.

SarahTancredi · 19/10/2019 17:29

They wont do anything so theres no point.

And unless they are carrying "enough to supply" all they'd do is take it off them and leave. And within about 2 second theyd have another one lit up

TheMagpie · 20/10/2019 06:45

I'm curious, do you also feel this way about regular tobacco cigarettes? They also contribute to second hand smoke and smell vile.

If it's legal to smoke in those areas (I'm assuming it is, but I don't smoke at all so I could be wrong), then you would be unreasonable to tell them to stop. Your husband is right and I'm a little baffled as to why you don't trust his professional judgement.

seaweedandmarchingbands · 20/10/2019 06:50

Of course you should report it. It’s illegal. The fact that many people get away with it is irrelevant, really. You don’t like it, it is against the law and the police should be acting on it.

Monty27 · 20/10/2019 06:53

Do you think the police are unaware and you'll be saving society from such outrageous behaviour and upsetting folk?

longwayoff · 20/10/2019 06:57

Get a bus.

Freaking0ut · 20/10/2019 06:57

I would report to your local community policing team because it builds a picture. They probably won’t act on your report alone but if several reports have been made then that may change things.

Also OP I would chat to your local community councillor about it. They can take it up on your behalf. Smoking cannabis in the street is still illegal at the moment and just because the police may or may not do something about it doesn’t mean you are not allowed to be pissed off with it and want to try to change it.

hodgeheg92 · 20/10/2019 07:06

I tried to report weed smoking and I suspected dealing in my local park to 101. They said it was an environmental health issue and to speak to the council. The police have bigger issues I guess but I was shocked that they didn't even want to log it.

Pommes · 20/10/2019 07:13

Some of the responses here are unnecessary harsh. Instead going to the police (for the reasons outlined above), I would raise a complaint with TfL. You are their customer and it is their station.

x2boys · 20/10/2019 07:13

They won't care I live .uk be deprived area ,there's drug dealer apparently living in the flats opposite and there,s all.kinds of people hanging around I've seen discarded needles etc not much gets done so.i.doubt the police will do anything about people smoking weed .

x2boys · 20/10/2019 07:14

mischievousmummy · 10/11/2019 22:52

I can’t believe people openly smoke drugs in public - I’m assuming it’s London as you mentioned the tube
I don’t thinks it’s on personally
Sad that we have an underfunded police force and people can just do what they like it seems these days

Raspberrytruffle · 10/11/2019 23:07

Yanbu OP I cant stand the stench of weed

Raspberrytruffle · 10/11/2019 23:09

Oh and the police wont bother with your complaint other than writing it down as they are too overstretched as it is. As long as they aren't bothering anyone like being abusive they are doing no harm . That's purely what the police will say

goodwinter · 10/11/2019 23:09

I get that you don't like the smell, but... Screwing their lives up? That's a bit of an outdated stereotype.

goodwinter · 10/11/2019 23:11

Also the police are very unlikely to respond to this kind of thing - some forces have outright said as much. It's just not a priority with the budget and resources they have.

TheMustressMhor · 10/11/2019 23:11

Yes.

And this is the heart of the problem, really. The police really haven't got time for this.

It's maybe something you should take up with your MP. She or he should be raising the issue in the HoC to demonstrate that the police force needs much more investment.

Sycamoretrees · 10/11/2019 23:17

Absolutely report it, the police may not do anything straight a way but every voice helps with antisocial behaviour. Also worth speaking to local counsellors/ mp... with an election looming they may well be keen to be seen to be proactive. You won't loose anything by reporting, and it'll make your self feel better to know you've done your bit.

IncrediblySadToo · 10/11/2019 23:18

TFL not the police, if you really must, but in London breathing in a bit of weed really isn’t the worst thing you’re breathing in, so I’d stop banging on about that if I were you, because it’ll make you sound like an idiot.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/11/2019 23:19

Living in London exposes you to horrible levels of air pollution (depending on area). A lung full of weed smoke won't be an issue in comparison.
