Posting here for traffic: We have purchased DS a tablet for his upcoming 9th birthday next week and after downloading the apps he uses on my iPad (match attax and minecraft) I wonder if there is a child-friendly messaging app I can download for him? I would use whatsapp but he doesn't have a phone number - nor does he have any social media

If it is an Apple device, you can set up an icloud kids account and use iMessage (and even email). Just make sure you input only people he is allowed to contact in the address book.

Its an android tablet - Samsung galaxy.
I would be limited to me and his dad at first. He is going away for half term to my parents and usually my mum whatsapps me from him on her phone

Daft as this might sound, you need to find out what his friends are using. There is no point us all recommending apps if they aren't the ones his friends use

He won't be messaging his friends. It will just be so he can contact me and his dad if he wants (I leave for work before he wakes up) and he goes away to my parents for a few days during the holidays. When he is away he uses my mum's phone to send me whatsapp messages/pictures
