Was that video shot in the UK Shock. Talk about the mob.

Reminded me too much of the soldiers the IRA dragged out of their car and shot over 30 years ago Sad ...

WTF is happening to my country ?

ArcheryAnnie · 17/10/2019 09:35

Basically a load of spoiled private school kids who are used to getting lots of attention and don't have to worry about money (aren't most of them being paid to do this anyway?) or work, so they think they'll disrupt some plebs ability to get to work for high jinks.

Where's your evidence for this, viaLatvia?

TheNestedIf · 17/10/2019 09:36

I thought this last time round about them disrupting public transport. It's completely counterproductive.

Last week, because of them, commuters who spend a portion of their commute on foot were being forced into a fairly large detour around Westminster.

They are just pissing people off rather than getting them on board and that's bearing in mind people won't change their habits unless it's easy. Not to mention their demands are pretty much un-achievable anyway even if people were inclined to go "Oooh, yes, please, even more time on my commute! Power to the planet!"

Oh, and do not get me started on Greta Thunberg. Wait, do. She needs to get back to school, get back to her studies and find a practical way to make things better. Not just bellow hysterically at politicians who don't give a shit. It doesn't work. I give you Swampy, who is was last heard of up a tree 14 years ago and is now, apparently, back in the public eye. Why does he need to be back in the public eye? Because he made no notable difference.

In the meantime, people who did attend school rather than spending their days marching about with a placard have been working on sustainable energy, more environmental ways of farming, etc, etc. That's what works.

Sorry for the rant. I support the environment and they are making me very, very cross.

SlothMama · 17/10/2019 09:37

They are disrupting the DLR which is probably one of the cleanest ways of travelling in London. I get that they want to make a point however they aren't half shooting themselves in the foot. Surely this will force more cars onto the road today because of their stupidity!

bellabasset · 17/10/2019 09:39

Absolute madness protesting on public transport. I say this as someone who travelled for many years on public transport so well aware of the effects of disruption.

It's a terrible pressure for staff trying to keep transport running safely.

Justanotherlurker · 17/10/2019 09:40

Like others, I applaud the broad aims of XR and wholeheartedly support the official aim.

They don't have an official aim, look at what the founder is saying, they can't even offer any glimps of a solution.

snottysystem · 17/10/2019 09:41

Reminded me too much of the soldiers the IRA dragged out of their car and shot over 30 years ago ...

Come on now, this was obviously wrong but let's not forget about Bloody Sunday.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/10/2019 09:43

To be fair XR kicked a commuter first- dont start nuttin wont be nuttin

snottysystem · 17/10/2019 09:46

To be fair XR kicked a commuter first- dont start nuttin wont be nuttin

Well that explains one on one but not the pile on.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/10/2019 09:48

Well that explains one on one but not the pile on mob mentality. That time of the morning in East London you're going to have a lot of manual, possibly lower paid (than the City) workers- if they dont turn up for work they dont get paid. I dont blame them for getting heated.

SlothMama · 17/10/2019 09:49

I expected the video to be a lot worse, it seems a lot of the commuters were stopping others from kicking them. Canning town is literally the stupidest place to stage something like this.
I wonder how big the surge on Ubers was today? Nice one XR....

andyoldlabour · 17/10/2019 09:52

They are anarchists who have never worked a day in their life, have never had to leave the house at 6 in the morning, take a 2 hour train journey to work, leave at 5.30, then get home around 8 - absolutely knackered.
Much as I agree with climate change and our impact on the World, I have no time for these wasters.

nancy75 · 17/10/2019 09:57

Canning Town, one of the poorest areas of London - all this protest looks like is middle class twats causing problems for working class people trying to get to work to earn a living.
The people of Canning Town aren’t jetting off round the world every school holidays, or driving gas guzzling cars, I bet most of the people on that platform didn’t have a gap year ‘helping’ to build a school in Africa.
By all means protest but why stop people using the most environmentally friendly form of public transport we have?

DGRossetti · 17/10/2019 09:57

Come on now, this was obviously wrong but let's not forget about Bloody Sunday.

I wasn't trying make a partisan political point - just highlight the horror of a mob - any mob - descending on an individual with blood in their noses. And seeing that not in a war torn country thousands of miles away, but the capital city of a supposedly civilised nation.

Charmlight · 17/10/2019 09:59

I agree with their cause totally, but many of them I fear, are self serving arseholes.
They have no thought for anyone who is trying to get to hospitals for treatment or work. It would be a different story if it was them or theirs trying to get there.

ArcheryAnnie · 17/10/2019 09:59

Well yeah, but it doesn't make it right. I don't remember lots of people using mob mentality as an excuse during the Tottenham riots.

CrisisMummy · 17/10/2019 10:01

From BBC News Online:

Analysis
By Tom Edwards, BBC London transport correspondent

Even from within Extinction Rebellion there has been disagreement on targeting public transport - particularly London's Tube and DLR which are pretty efficient, very well-used and low carbon.

Many think public transport is the part of the solution to achieving net zero-carbon transport systems.

By targeting the transport network, protesters are confusing their messages.

However, you have to remember Extinction Rebellion is a decentralised umbrella term for lots and lots of smaller groups and as such they have differing methods - some more radical than others - and can operate independently.

And - ultimately - what they want is publicity for the cause.

ppeatfruit · 17/10/2019 10:02

BUT BUT BUT We are discussing it, I don't agree with the making a lot of people late to work . (Especially tube travellers)

BUT we do need to do something fgs because so many people seem to want to continue their lives with very little thought (if any) about the state of our planet.

DGRossetti · 17/10/2019 10:03

And - ultimately - what they want is publicity for the cause.

It's been clear since I was a student - over 30 years ago - that consumption cannot continue as it is, and the environment is fucked.

Not quite sure how much more publicity you need ?

nancy75 · 17/10/2019 10:04

We might be discussing it but it’s not getting their message across - have a look in twitter, the general consensus seems to be what did they expect/good on the commuters.
If anything their tactics turn people away from their cause

GenderfreeJoe · 17/10/2019 10:05

They're just looking for trouble. If the cause was important to them they wouldn't be targeting public transport. Wankers.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/10/2019 10:06

BUT we do need to do something fgs because so many people seem to want to continue their lives with very little thought (if any) about the state of our planet

What do they actually want though?- i literally have no idea of their demands.

Justanotherlurker · 17/10/2019 10:07

And seeing that not in a war torn country thousands of miles away, but the capital city of a supposedly civilised nation.

Kind of points to XR not really being on point with anything other than slightly anarchist tones with a hint of racism and classicism thrown in.
Add in the usual left incoherent 'fixes' and aims, pissing off those wanting to get to work and put food on the table, on a mode of transport that XR should support, shows trying to morally equate ti to the IRA is done in bad taste (even the IRA didn't target the tube)

Considering most of these protesters openly admit to being eco-communists in the group chats then they will be doing a lot of violence themselves in the future.

This is also the same 'branch' who are racist about prison staff

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/10/2019 10:08

I'm on a couple of the fb groups. It seems the vast majority of XR supporters voted against this idea, but the few went ahead with it anyway.

I think it's a severe mis-step and it's put me off XR, as someone who has worked in the conservation & environment sector for over 20 years.
That and a couple of medium articles, one from one of the founders of XR which was a few paragraphs of unmitigated bollocks, and the copwatcher one linked above, which was very thought-provoking.

I'm actually increasingly angry with ER (XR?) for de-legitimising genuine climate protest and getting even more of us written off as 'uncooperative crusties' who are benefit fraudsters and/or middle-class anarchists.

It's just given a space for climate deniers to gain support and has tainted the real progress and support they had gained thus far.

Pillocks.
