I was broadly supportive of them until I saw an interview with one of their lead campaigners on Sky News. When asked about concerns with blocking access to a hospital she showed no concern at all. Her cause was the only thing that mattered, not ordinary people who may be sick, going to work, visiting dying relatives etc. This attitude, the cringey dancing/raves postwd online and the Tube protests have put me right off them.

RedDogsBeg · 18/10/2019 20:06

ok, London makes people less like human animal beings and more like Zoo animals , observe them, lol... you will see , sheep on london bridge , and ants in Trafalgar square. No im not goading, i,m telling the truth , very different things indeed. I can goad, but i dont.

and the point you are lol trying to make with your comment lol on Londoners lol is what exactly Kidlacky?

Kidlacky · 18/10/2019 20:15

exactly, i wish people would say, "I didnt like it when you said ABC , then you can understand them, rather than a complete personal judgement and condemnation..... cheers. If people are offended, they get offended , you cannot offend someone, they have to be offended. I,m personally offended by the word "AND' and life is hard for me, but i,m very very forgiving.

StrangeLookingParasite · 18/10/2019 20:19

I have saved enough on train fares to buy a little pied a terre in the 13th arrondisment

One of the high-rises?

RedDogsBeg · 18/10/2019 20:28

Posters aren't offended by you Kidlacky, they are criticising and assessing what you say, when they can make sense of it scattered as your comments are with irrelevant an inappropriate lols.

winniestone37 · 18/10/2019 20:46

The heads of industry and their share holders are key to change- targeting exhausted commuters is pointless. I heard a very young man saying we’re in the news that’s good!! Idiot. What a waste of a potentially brilliant group.

Hmmpop · 18/10/2019 20:46

For those that think XR are cretins and awful people and all the other pejoratives that have been used, and that they aren't doing the cause any good - what do you think the alternative is?

I genuinely would be interested to hear what those that think my involvement in XR is a waste of time and maybe even damaging to the cause , think that I could usefully become involved in that could make a difference? What are you doing (other than making personal lifestyle changes) to try and address the problem?

RedDogsBeg · 18/10/2019 20:50

There have been many suggestions already on this thread Hmmpop.

Mrspenfold123 · 18/10/2019 20:56

Hmmpop
Well, I don’t know if you wanted my opinion as you specified people who thought you were awful people.

I don’t think you are awful people.
I just think that pissing commuters off, stopping people reaching hospitals isn’t reducing carbon emissions, and is irritating normal people so much that they are less likely to lobby their MPs for action or take the required action to reduce their own footprints.

Why do you think the chaos has helped the cause, after reading the responses here?

Hmmpop · 18/10/2019 20:59

They mostly seem to have been about making lifestyle changes - what do you suggest RedDogsBeg, are you involved in any environmental groups/campaigning that you think makes a better fist of it than XR?

Mrspenfold123 · 18/10/2019 20:59

Hmmpop
You are guilty of “politicians fallacy”
“Something must be done; this is something; therefore we must do it.”
It’s put the cause back a year in my view.

HelenaDove · 18/10/2019 21:00

So Hmmpop are you actiually saying the only choice is doing nothing or doing what XR are doing?

Hmmpop · 18/10/2019 21:04

Mrspenfold123 - it's got people talking about the issue. At a cost to the organisation most definitely. I don't know if it's a good pay off.

But again, what's the alternative? I feel helpless, writing to my MP gets a generic response letter.

HelenaDove · 18/10/2019 21:05

Personal lifestyle changes are actually not possible for everyone.

The advice to take showers instead of baths for instance.

I have a bath There is no shower. I live in a housing association flat and when they do replace the bathrooms it is like for like.

Like i said earlier.........they have no idea of how some in the UK have to live.

Hmmpop · 18/10/2019 21:06

HelenaDove - Nope. I'm very specifically asking others what they are doing that they feel is a better option than XR.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2019 21:06

I’d prefer people talking about it over no talking at all. I find the posts about this stuff very strongly to one side on mn.

Not sure what the alternatives are, I mostly do lifestyle / buying changes, but would be interested to hear.

Hmmpop · 18/10/2019 21:10

I'd be very interested to hear too. I've made a lot of lifestyle changes, but really it's pissing in the wind I fear.

Hmmpop · 18/10/2019 21:20

It's really frustrating when so much criticism is leveled with little discussion about alternatives.

gwyn26264 · 18/10/2019 21:36

“Why aren’t they at work?”
a) Because their values put a greater weight on a longer term significance than short term ease.
“...people who just like a protest..” no this is belief and values driven. Check Greta and deep research on Millennial values.
b) There is a recognition that Universal Basic Income via A.I., Reinforcement Learning, Big Data, Robotisation, Major societal unemployment is inevitable. The shift by UNHWI to ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) investing and multiple research papers (ask me?) means they are on the right side of history.

They have gained huge media exposure and scaled at a level that if they were a start up would make them Unicorn potential.

“Arseholes” and “Idiots” is not exactly deep thinking. There will be a strong visceral response by the commuting masses, aggression yes
, but this is a long term struggle. Think Suffragettes, Gandhi, Black Civil Rights, Mandela, look at war on cigarettes, current war on plastic.....look at the models, look at History.

Expect much, much more

Ated · 18/10/2019 21:41

They should have used the protesters to grease the tracks.

HelenaDove · 18/10/2019 21:46

a)" Because their values put a greater weight on a longer term significance than short term ease"

Ease? i sincerely hope you arent intimating that the working class people of Canning Town are choosing to work rather than take time off to demonstrate for the sake of ease. Fucking ease, Really? People on zero hours or UC do not choose to go into work for ease. They go to work so they can eat and pay their fucking rent.

This kind of attitude is why you are getting this backlash.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 18/10/2019 21:51

I read from some academic that the quickest way to get people to care about climate change is to get them out of poverty.

People do not care about what could happen in 30 years time when they're barely managing to feed their kids today. Also, if poor children in poor countries get out of poverty, one of them could be the next Einstein and come up with some genius solution to the energy crisis.

Justanotherlurker · 18/10/2019 21:51

a) Because their values put a greater weight on a longer term significance than short term ease.
“...people who just like a protest..” no this is belief and values driven. Check Greta and deep research on Millennial values.*

Intermixed with a lot of paid protesters, some are wanting to be paid £400 a week even though they can afford to take a couple of years not working.

, but this is a long term struggle. Think Suffragettes, Gandhi, Black Civil Rights, Mandela, look at war on cigarettes, current war on plastic.....look at the models, look at History.

This kind of unironic thinking is why XR is generally being shat on across the globe, XR is full of middle class larpers whilst twattering on the latest chinese phone.

You have people flying over from fucking Australia to offer support and not one person in the official XR channels calling them out. They had a chance to become the next green party with a more reasoned science stance, as it is, it's been infiltrated by open border fuckwits and teenage anarchists.

It will go down in history all right, but it will not be for making a significant change, just a side note as to how social media and dumbing down of politics became a thing.

HelenaDove · 18/10/2019 21:55

What i copied and pasted from the other thread obviously needs posting again.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook Thu 17-Oct-19 20:02:46
Actively preventing people from getting hospital treatment, attending job interviews to improve their lives, arriving on time to get benefits, and getting to work in order to put food on the table IS a form of violence.

Don't tell me, a woman of colour with children who faces both racial, sexual and class economic disadvantage that your actions directly adding to that disadvantage isn't violent. And the irony of it! The people with the most advantage pontificating to those with the least
