I imagine the protestors live in a nice middle class bubble and were expecting at most a strongly worded letter of complaint to The Guardian or the police delicately arresting them. They probably aren't used to people saying "no" to them and certainly not violently objecting to their demands.

tumbleisatwat · 17/10/2019 17:14

He's a teacher. So yes, probably middle class or at least educated.

Sad that this is becoming a class issue.

nononever · 17/10/2019 17:20

XR put out a statement, in part:

XR said: 'We are aware that one of our activists responded in self defence in a moment of panic when confronted by a threatening situation. He acknowledges his accountability for this action and we offer gratitude for members of the public who helped to protect him.'

There have been over 1700 arrests since last Monday. Utterly bloody outrageous. Bunch of moronic assholes.

Yorkshirelass444 · 17/10/2019 17:24

People are not stupid: they know that ER consists of a bunch of spoilt idiots.
I know a well-meaning 70 year old who was a part of the protest; he's such a sweet guy but very naive. I also know a load of lazy, over-privileged dickheads who were a part of it (i should keep better company, shouldn't I?!) Really pisses me off as could be massively counter-productive.

Grumpelstilskin · 17/10/2019 17:34

@ReanimatedSGB A lot of protestors of this kind barely have to look after themselves (Mummy does their laundry and Daddy pays the rent on their art studio) let alone understand what it's like to have someone else utterly dependent on you.

You could not have hit that nail any squarer on the head. One of these privileged, upper middle-class ER wanknoodles has his daddy pay for an overpriced studio where he ponces about, claiming to be a documentary maker. He set up a crowd-funding appeal, asking people to pay for his legal costs after getting arrested for criminal damage during the April protests. This utter shitehawk jets all over the world for his crappy documentaries, subsidised by his wealthy family.

Saddler · 17/10/2019 17:44

Great that they were dealt with accordingly

Yorkshirelass444 · 17/10/2019 17:48

"wanknoodles", I love that!

Dapplegrey · 17/10/2019 17:48

We're fucked.

Violence at protests is nothing new. Poll tax protests and one of the hunting protests turned violent.
Why on earth are you surprised at this one? As pps have said plenty of bystanders stepped in to protect the chap pulled off the train.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/10/2019 17:52

It's a real shame the conversation is about mob violence and hypocrisy rather than about what we should all be doing about climate change.

I'm realising that I do live in a bit of a bubble and most people don't know/don't care about the climate and don't know what we need to be doing and telling the government to do.

Hopefully this XR debacle will eventually die down and we will be left with the issue more in the general public's consciousness though.

Davros · 17/10/2019 17:56

It was hardly mob violence, but of an exaggeration/dramatisation there. I was in Trafalgar Square on the night of the Poll Tax riots, that was wild

stevenshannah268 · 17/10/2019 17:58

They need to find a better way to get their message across - delaying commuters is only going to annoy the public and not paint a good picture of the protesters!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 18:05

@ Davros I didn’t see you... this lot are just smug and irritating.

If you put a whole load of planning, sewing and choreography into your protest, you are a tit.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 18:07

And I’m sure that dye can’t be natural, the fabric probably not fair trade cotton and those wigs look synthetic fibre... not to mention the industrial strength pain stripper required to get the face paint off...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 18:11

Extinction Rebellion has apologised for targeting the London transport network today after one of its activists was dragged off the top of a Tube train by angry commuters.

well duh - their tweet announcing their intention had 99.9% replies warning them that they wouldn’t get a warm reception (and possibly a beating). And it was 2 protestors - one pulled and one rugby tackled.

You know when you watch action films and Tempe goodie and baddie are running down the train roof fighting? It was nothing like that.

ForalltheSaints · 17/10/2019 18:20

I expect they will think twice before protesting again on a mode of transport which is largely powered by renewable energy.

Davros · 17/10/2019 18:26

It was hardly mob violence, bit of an exaggeration/dramatisation there. I was in Trafalgar Square on the night of the Poll Tax riots, that was wild

nancy75 · 17/10/2019 18:26

I expect they will think twice before venturing back to East London

Davros · 17/10/2019 18:29

OopsBlush
lordprof can't say it wasn't exciting Blush(again)

Jojowash · 17/10/2019 18:33

Complete dicks, looks like they took a beating though! Shocking response from the commuters, they didn't expect that.

Not really sure that was their best target but it got them on the news. That's what they wanted 🤷‍♀️

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 18:45

How could they not think that a load of pissed off London commuters wouldn’t kick their arses?

Skinnychip · 17/10/2019 18:47

I think they're going a really arse about tit way of acheiving anything. This isn't the first time they've disrupted public transport (even earlier this week they blocked a road that was only for buses and cyclists) and it probably won't be the last. If you stop people using public transport , some commuters will walk, many will hop in a more polluting cab. A week or 2 ago they planned to spray the treasury in "fake blood" (water with dye or colouring). Wasting a)the water they were spraying and b) more water used to clear up their stunt.
I don't know anyone more sympathetic to the climate emergency since XR started and i think they've almost drowned out the message they're trying to put out by pissing people off.
I don't condone violence and its not right that commuters acted in number against him but can understand the frustration.

And we have a crisis in policing, and shortage of police and funding, and instead of tackling crime they are having to deal with twattery such as idiots glued to trains or chained to bridges. I imagine they are on compulsory overtime and limited holiday while this is going on.

Justanotherlurker · 17/10/2019 18:54

If you put a whole load of planning, sewing and choreography into your protest, you are a tit.

It's middle class larpers, the telegram Chanel for XR is full of tankies and trust fund kids, they had to cancel their proposed Gatwich shutdown attempt to avoid more bad PR.

When this initially hit, the XR chanels was comedy gold, from some trying to start a process of pushing a false flag narrative, through to flirting on the edge of classicism as to why the proletariat was not appreciating them, to trying to paint them as all right wing.

If it was a coherent, consistent anti climate disaster movement (hint it's not just read the founders own words) and not infiltrated by uneducated simplistic tankies and part time anarchists it might gain some wider public support.

What's funnier among many who have been highlighting the climate crisis for years it the sudden arrogance of the narrative of "they will be remembered in history" bollocks.

If anyone wants a laugh go look at the telegram posts, there was one unironically complaining that she had traveled over from Australia to show support and was held up at customs. 'Flights for me not for thee'

Justanotherlurker · 17/10/2019 19:03

How could they not think that a load of pissed off London commuters wouldn’t kick their arses?

There was a genuine air of the protelariat would be grateful, they don't listen to twitter as they get shit no matter what obstruction they cause. Whilst it was around 50/50 in support last night it was still generally approved of on their official channels, it is only retrospectively that it's being swing as being voted against. Not that it matters anyway as some don't even listen, the peoples assembly approach that they like to profess is another example of not true socialism in early action.

kenandbarbie · 17/10/2019 19:15

It seems just like the mayday protests from a few years back. They fizzled out. What were they protesting about? I don't even remember.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/10/2019 19:23

I’ve been held up by ER I wasn’t happy at all and didn’t want to hear the reasons why from a middle class eco warrior work and soap dodger - I was hoping to get in early to allow someone who have been on a 12 hour shift go home

Instead of disrupting people going about their everyday work, some who will lose pay if they are late due to their antics why not disrupt parliament
