Smear test

I was due my smear in March but I was pregnant so had to wait till 3 months after baby was born. Went to have coil fitted. Doctor couldn't get it in (honestly wasn't painful, she couldn't get the right angel or something..I've been referred to have it put in at a gynaecologist, which is fine).
Went this week for my smear, to be told I can't have it because of the coil fitting. This interferes with the cells so I've got to wait 3 months from my gynae appointment for my smear.. so end of January.
The nurse told me the doctor should have done the smear before trying to put the coil in. AIBU to make a complaint? Im upset that I've now got to wait.
I'm nervous that if something is wrong, it's had an extra year, nearly, of going undetected.
What's the chances of something having developed?
I'm so annoyed, I've always previously had my smears on time. I can't help feeling panicky.
