to wonder why Extinction Rebellion is so concerned about humans becoming extinct?

Are they more concerned about humans becoming extinct or more concerned about the planet? The two are mutually exclusive aren't they?

Errrrr because they are human and don't want they and their offspring to die?

We need to treat the planet better if we want to survive on it longer than 100yeara from now. Science recons we are done for completely within this time frame if we don't try to save the planet we can't save ourselves.

Smashtastick · 13/10/2019 07:24

And no it's not mutually exclusive. How can it be?

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 13/10/2019 07:28

The planet will be fine - very different, but fine. It will survive until the sun dies. It does not need humans, it does not need an atmosphere conducive to the dominant plant and animal species of today.

They want to keep life as it is. Humans, and all the other animals and plants, so we need to stick within certain limits, to ensure the conditions for survivabilty of life as we know it. And that is what they want to see.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/10/2019 07:32

It’s not just about humans, it’s about the hundreds/thousands of other species going extinct rapidly and the collapse of the ecosystem. All species on Earth have lived in equilibrium for millennia and now it’s going out of whack. Also the world is going to get really horrible for billions of humans for a long long time before that potential extinction if things carry on the way they are. The numbers of climate refugees is already growing rapidly and will continue to get worse

lazylinguist · 13/10/2019 07:33

Hmm Because it would be pretty weird for a human not to care about the death of all humans and everything they have achieved and created.

MaxNormal · 13/10/2019 07:36

I'd actually not be too upset if it turned out that the time of humans is drawing to a close. We're a bit shit and a total infestation on the planet. The planet will recover, very quickly if we think of it in terms of its lifespan. There have been mass extinctions before.

goldenzog · 13/10/2019 07:39

The biggest concern is that as the planet becomes less and less able to support human life we will suffer major food shortages, then famines, then in some places it will become to hot to live and in others too cold. People will move because of the famines or extreme weather and then you will have huge mass migration. There will be civil wars, wars. Life will be horrific and its likely to affect any current children so naturally those protesting are concerned for their children and grandchildren (children that already exist, not future generations)

ChickenyChick · 13/10/2019 07:41

I thought the extinction they worried about was from other species

It is indeed mutually exclusive, overpopulation of humans is the worst thing for the planet

NotJustACigar · 13/10/2019 07:45

Agreed that overpopulation of humans is the worst thing for the planet. It would be ideal if the population of humans were significantly smaller day 5-10% of what it is today. Then there would be adequate resources for all other life forms as well and life on earth could be balanced. It's one of the reasons I'm childless by choice.

Moon108 · 13/10/2019 07:45

I think if we die out balance will be restored. Other animals will thrive. Rainforest will grow again.

I think it is meant to happen and nothing we do can stop it.

Much like dinosaurs died out.

There are too many of us and we keep doing dumb things. It’s inevitable!

pooboobsleeprepeat · 13/10/2019 07:47

Did you know giraffes are now endangered? Stop criticising er and inform yourself on what’s really going on!

JasonPollack · 13/10/2019 09:52

I would quite like for my children and grandchildren not to live in a climate apocalypse. Resource wars, out of control storms, flooding, pollinator die off etc etc. Sadly it seems unlikely and I feel guilty about it every day.
