To think Catherine Zeta-Jones is an inspiration!

I was in the hairdressers yesterday and so provided with the obligatory copy of “Hello” magazine. Anyway, in it was CZJ and I just thought she looks fantastic. I’m 45 now, so the 50s are looming and I love seeing a woman like that who is 50, but more stunning than ever. I also think the same about Amanda Holden who I’ve met a few times and she’s another one who has improved with age. I know AH is not popular on MN, but why not? AIBU to think these two defy the myth that women should just let it all go as they get older?

I have to say, I don’t want to give the woman a hard time, but the one I did find actually quite shocking was Cheryl Cole/ Tweedy when she made her comeback in those strange boots. I literally did not recognise her at all. Botox is one thing, but I don’t know how (or why) she has changed her eyes, her face shape and her whole expression. She looks like a younger version of Nigella Lawson now. I did find that quite scary. If someone hadn’t told me that was Cheryl Cole, I would genuinely have thought she was a whole new pop star.

I get that because I find Pink and Kate Moss quite aspirational in terms of a 'look'.

SignedUpJust4This · 12/10/2019 11:49

You're missing the point OP. It's fine to say CZJ/Jen aniston/AH/blah blah blah look good. Im not debating that CZJ looks good for age and good for any age as she is a beautiful lady. Your mistake was to label it 'inspiring'. What a depressing way to 'inspire' people. On a side not i have always loved Linda Hamilton and her bad ass ness and i now love her even more that shes a granny badass. Theres a role model. Old and getting the fuck on with killing terminators. Not sitting there worrying about her face.

ChickenyChick · 12/10/2019 11:54

Haha OP, people keep piling in with their worty comments about truly inspirational women Grin

, I think I get what you mean, but personally think AH looks very plastic to me and I do not aspire to look like that

Ideally I’d like to remain nice looking without effort and through luck Wink, am too lazy and scared to do all that tinkering. Am even allergic to hair dye 🙄

I’d like to be above caring about how I look, at age 47, but I must be too shallow Smile

Seeing women in their 50s looking fab is indeed nice. Am also partial to nice looking men in that age bracket. People watching can be fun

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2019 11:57

Inspiring elements aside, I’ve been watching Call My Agent and that’s been good for older French women, character and style.

I can’t get excited about CZJ and definitely not AH but it is nice to see women 50 plus looking good on the tele rather than invisible.

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2019 11:59

If this had been phrased another way who looks good etc the op could have said hers and others would have said theirs but it’s probably a more interesting thread this way anyway.

RuffleCrow · 12/10/2019 12:04

@Parisa5 Liv Tyler is another one who's gradually morphing into Nigella. Such a shame because all these women are beautiful in their own right. Their plastic surgeon is the only one benefitting.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/10/2019 12:09

CZJ is a very good looking woman

But she looks like she has had loads of work done AH just looks ridiculous the amount of surgery

And most of us would look better if we had the time and more importantly the money to do so with or without surgery

Neither are what I would consider inspirational what have they actually done to be inspirational one is talented (that’s inspirational to some) and very good looking and both married men that elevated their careers

Mrsjayy · 12/10/2019 12:12

She is in her 50s not exactly 100 but no I don't think sticking chemicals in your face so it freezes time is inspirational .

GrimDamnFanjo · 12/10/2019 13:32

I thought this was going to be a thread about CZJ talking about being bipolar?
To me, speaking out about mental health is inspiring rather than her looks.

gubbsywubbsy · 12/10/2019 13:49

Re your post about why it's ok to like Jennifer Anniston etc is because she looks like she still has her face unlike czj and AH .. maybe she has a better plastic surgeon but don't be fooled into thinking that face is possible without a shedload of help .

greenlavender · 12/10/2019 14:09

God no. I'm Welsh if it's relevant. I think CZJ is quite an unpleasant woman & that's far more important.

Alsohuman · 12/10/2019 14:36

Interesting piece in The Times this morning by Dr Perricone (celebs’ dermatologist) who says he doesn’t do injectables. Because Botox freezes the muscles, they atrophy through lack of use - makes total sense when you think about it - apparently that leads to your face losing its contours, making you look older.

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2019 14:41

The other problem is it makes eyes smaller which ages people. Smoother face but offset by subtle changes like that.

IcedPurple · 12/10/2019 17:27

I don't doubt that Aniston has had 'help - she's in Hollywood after all - but I'm her age and have very few wrinkles. It IS possible to look good at 50 and beyond without 'help'.

Parisa5 · 12/10/2019 17:48

The thing with Botox is, you don’t use it in the lower half of the face. Everyone’s face is different. Some people have very strongly or over-pronounced “frown muscles” so you can relax those slightly. Other people tend to raise their eyebrows a lot which causes the horizontal forehead lines. You can have Botox for laughter lines around the eyes , but I have nothing round my eyes at all as I don’t have lines there yet. Everyone’s face is different. I have the Botox mainly in my hairline to smooth the forehead a bit. I can still raise my eyebrows and I have full movement. Most practitioners won’t do the “frozen look” for the reasons given above by Alsohuman. They tell me to go back after 3-4 months, but I tend to go for about 7 months between, sometimes longer. My lines aren’t to bad for 45 at all, but nevertheless, I prefer a softer, fresher look. If you have quite heavy eyelids or not much space between your eyebrows and eyelids, Botox may not be for you.

Last time I was there, she was trying to sell me this new treatment where they inject tiny amounts of collagen into 5 parts of each side of your face your face to add definition and give lift. Apparently it’s a natural substance and boosts the production of your own collagen. I’m not sure about that.

I’ve never had lip fillers or anything like that because I don’t need that, but I know some people who I think have had that because it can look a bit odd for a few days. But after that you can’t tell.

And it can't help being married to a man a quarter of a century her senior. Looks aside, I don't find her lifestyle 'inspirational' at all. She could have had her pick of all sorts of young hotties, and that's who she's lumbered with?

I guess it worked out in terms of career and fame, but sounds like a faustian bargain to me, and it shows in her face.

That's what I think, too.

There are some much older (than me - I'm 66) men who I wouldn't say were attractive - but they look pleasant. I could imagine that they'd be good company and a woman could enjoy being with them.

I've never got that vibe from Michael Douglas.

SerenDippitty · 12/10/2019 18:24

I do admire Helen Mirren because she’s a happy fulfilled childfree woman who has always been upfront about not being maternal.

IcedPurple · 12/10/2019 18:25

The entire Douglas family seem incredibly creepy to me. Always have. Am reminded of the old saw 'When you marry for money, you earn every penny'.

I've also seen that CZJ is trying to 'lauch' her daughter Caris as a model, in the Kaia Gerber or Ireland Baldwin mode. Trouble is... her daughter takes after her father. I think there's something off about encouraging your daughter to go for a career where she will always be compared to her mother - and in a negative way. It's like you're setting her up for a lifetime of psychological issues.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/10/2019 20:40

And of course there was the Kirk Douglas/Natalie Wood allegation.

And he boasted admitted that he was a sexual predator and treated women very badly.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/10/2019 20:42

I do think Carys is pretty, though - but she has an air of arrogance in many of her pictures.

IcedPurple · 12/10/2019 21:02

Remeber CZJ wheeling ol' Kirk on stage during the Golden Globes or some other awards show at the height of #Metoo? Ugh.

As for Carys....Pretty? Sure. But many/most young girls are pretty, or certainly can be made to appear so with the best photographers, make up artists etc. But no way in hell would she be on magazine covers if her parents were teachers or shop assistants.

Really, the son, Dylan, is the looker in that family. Kind of reminds me of Cyndy Crawford's kids. The girl is pretty but nothing special, but the boy is the spitting image of his gorgeous mama. But things being as they are, it's the girl who gets pushed into the 'modelling' career.

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2019 21:06

Carys isn’t typical model material but might get some stuff with good photographers etc.

I don’t see it with Dylan just googled but agree on Cindy Crawford’s son.

They all do it these days, two famous parents and what else is there, Instagram helps since they have the numbers already.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/10/2019 21:14

I do indeed!

It was sordid in the extreme as I recall.

littlepeas · 12/10/2019 21:16

Both of Cindy Crawford’s children are absolutely gorgeous!

I the best example of the child of an actor who is a model and really shouldn’t be is Rafferty Law - it really baffles me.
