To think Catherine Zeta-Jones is an inspiration!

I was in the hairdressers yesterday and so provided with the obligatory copy of “Hello” magazine. Anyway, in it was CZJ and I just thought she looks fantastic. I’m 45 now, so the 50s are looming and I love seeing a woman like that who is 50, but more stunning than ever. I also think the same about Amanda Holden who I’ve met a few times and she’s another one who has improved with age. I know AH is not popular on MN, but why not? AIBU to think these two defy the myth that women should just let it all go as they get older?

I’ve no idea why people can’t just say yes, she looks great.

Translation: “I’ve no idea why people can’t just agree with me” Grin

BettysLeftTentacle · 11/10/2019 16:52

Because it shouldn’t matter how that woman looks. To say someone is ‘inspirational’ because of how they look is insulting and rather sad.

colourlessgreenidea · 11/10/2019 16:53

This is such a strange thread because I honestly think there's hardly anyone apart fro OP who finds someone her age inspiring because that person looks good because they've had work done.

But then when you get to bit where the OP mentions that she, along with half the women she knows, has regular Botox, it becomes clear that it’s not so much about inspiration as validation.

TottieandMarchpane · 11/10/2019 16:53

no idea why people can’t just say yes, she looks great. Over 200 posts of, “She looks fake,” “She’s not real though like me,” “Oh you’re so shallow if that’s ALL you care about,” “She’s got loads of money so that’s it,” “I prefer REAL women like ..,, we .,... Helen Mirren” ??? hmm

If your OP was “doesn’t CZJ look great?”, you probably would have got those kinds of replies.

BettysLeftTentacle · 11/10/2019 16:59

OP are you aware of Amanda Holden’s campaign to do with dispelling the stigma around baby loss? She spoke bravely about her own experiences of losing children and challenged the terminology used when describing a loss of a baby and exposed a near scandal in relation to how hospital dispose of the remains of a pregnancy. Due to that, many hospitals changed their policies and procedures.

But you say she’s inspirations because of how young she looks. Get it?

SesameOil · 11/10/2019 17:01

Yes, people are allowed to disagree with the way you frame an issue in aibu!

In answer to the original question, you're nbu to find someone inspirational if they embody something you admire. She's really not defying anything though. The opposite, shes evidently invested and continuing to invest significant energy and resources to looking like she isn't 50. Which is her business of course.

Andsoltbegins · 11/10/2019 17:05

They do look good for their age. Yes they’ve had work done but it’s their choice
Tbh I’m starting to look at myself and think I could do with some fillers and Botox but even if I could afford it .......the side effects oh dear they can cause some horrific reactions😳 I also saw a couple of videos and I was shocked it looks painful !

Parisa5 · 11/10/2019 17:06

It’s actually quite depressing how nobody can just admit CZJ looks great without doing her down by comparisons to unspecified women who may have “done” something. She’s not claiming to have “done” anything is she? she’s just at some awards ceremony or something. I’m not claiming she’s fine anything. No need to get all holier-than-thou about it.

Amanda Holden's face is full of that much Botox she has to screech that awful laugh so people know she's happy.
And them bloody dresses she wears

Parisa5 · 11/10/2019 17:07

“Done” not “fine” -sorry!

SesameOil · 11/10/2019 17:11

You're verging on holier than thou yourself OP! People are just as allowed to say they dont think obvious work is attractive as you are to say you think she looks great. And you're not just commenting on people you think have gone too far, which would be understandable, you're also commenting on those who merely disagree with you.

SallyWD · 11/10/2019 17:14

There are plenty of women I admire but not those two. Why should you find it inspirational to see a rich woman who looks younger than her age? Are women's appearances the only thing that make them worthy of admiration?

Roussette · 11/10/2019 17:14

I've complimented CZJ for her style. In that respect I think she looks good. But it's hard to explain away the work she's had done.

p.s. AH has no style!

Pixilicious · 11/10/2019 17:17

That’s there job. If my full time job was to look fantastic and I had a bottomless pit of money for makeup, hair, personal trainers and let’s not forget surgery I’m sure I’d look fantastic.
But is this really what we should be measuring women on??

Parisa5 · 11/10/2019 17:22

But why has she “gone too far!” Confused What does that even mean? She was a beautiful woman to begin with and she obviously takes care of herself. Is that a time now? Nobody on here has a clue what she’s had “done” or hasn’t done. She looks perfectly normal to me, just on the more “having a good day” side of normal and she obviously has a stylist, make-up artist etc.

They do look good however i dont really find 'not aging' inspiring. A tad depressing actually when you see the lengths some women will go to to act like time doesnt exist. Aging is a privilege denied to many.

lazylinguist · 11/10/2019 17:31

She doesn't look perfectly normal though. She looks like a celeb who was naturally beautiful but now looks very slightly weird because she's had work done. I guess if you know loads of people who have had work done, maybe it looks more normal to you. I know one woman who has had work done, and she looks ridiculous.

'Fillers and botox are here to stay, so women will use them' doesn't mean they are a good thing or even that they actually improve women's looks. As far as I'm concerned, anything that encourages women to continue to seek approval for their appearance rather than their other more important qualities is a bad thing. I wouldn't have work done if I had all the money in the world.

littlepeas · 11/10/2019 17:32

I’ve just had a look at some pics. I think she’s actually made herself look older with what she’s done to her face. It’s very much the ‘ageing actress’ look lots of the A list from the 90’s/00’s are currently sporting. It’s just a different way of looking older. It’s so much more beautiful to take good care of yourself, but not dick about with putting crap in your face.

SunshineCake · 11/10/2019 17:34

YANBU and a sucker. She doesn't naturally look like thatHmm. . She's had work done.

Roussette · 11/10/2019 17:35

sunshine I think we've established that on this thread.....

SunshineCake · 11/10/2019 17:44

Okay, Rousette.

Maybe people aren't saying CZJ looks great because they don't think she does.

Parisa5 · 11/10/2019 17:45

I think it’s obviously absolutely fine to not opt to get Botox, of course it is! But no need to decry those who do. Different treatments appeal to different women (or men). Invisalign / teeth whitening anyone? Well that’s not natural is it! Using chemicals on your hair rather than going grey “naturally?” Surely not! Eyebrow maintenance? It’s all on the same spectrum. Few women go totally “natural”, so I don’t think anyone is in a position to get on a high horse.

Fairyliz · 11/10/2019 17:49

CZJ was a beautiful young woman in the Darling buds of May (remember that?), but now I think she looks strange.
She’s like an alien masquerading as a beautiful woman but underneath she is a lizard creature.
(Need to get out more and stop watching sci-fi films Smile) xx

IcedPurple · 11/10/2019 17:49

Inspirational?

Firstly, I don't think she looks good. She was astonishingly beautiful in her youth and I'm sure she'd still be beautiful now if she hadn't ruined her face with 'procedures'. In any case, I see attractive women her age and older every single day - with not one fraction of the resources she has to put into looking good - so I don't get your 'wow a woman looks decent despite being ancient (!)' line either.

Other than her looks - which she was born with in any case - what exactly is inspirational about CZJ? She married well, if by 'well' you mean a very famous actor but going by the body language between them, it would appear their marriage is mostly for show these days. She was an OK actress but it was really her looks that made her a star. Nothing wrong with that but again, how is that 'inspirational'? What could your average woman take from CZJ's life that would help her to live hers?
