To declare Potted Meat underrated?

TheQueef · 09/10/2019 19:36

Nothing better on crackers with finely sliced raw onion 👄
Don't even mention warm on toast, I can't ever only have two slices.

What do you think is the most over looked/ underrated?

I LOVE potted Hough Grin

DeRigueurMortis · 10/10/2019 02:10

Ginger I use the HB recipe but tbh I go off piste a bit because I like a bit of texture so only blizz half/three quarters of the meat in the processor and then stir in the rest as small chunks of meat (hard to be precise i just manage the ratio until it looks right to me).

So I'm maybe half way between a pot and a hough Wink

It's delicious...

Rachelover60 · 10/10/2019 02:33

Do you mean things like Shippam's?

A couple of years ago I rediscovered salmon paste and other types of fish paste, thoroughly enjoyed them in sandwiches (not so keen on meat paste). People of my generation often had it in packed lunches or for afternoon tea, cheap and cheerful and, apparently, quite nutritious.

I used to like potted beef and also salmon and shrimp paste in the 1950 era. But I never eat any of this pate stuff today.it always gives me a bad stomach, as I think there are some crap additives in it.

Gingerkittykat · 10/10/2019 03:12

@mawbroon Not surprising you love potted hough with a user name like that!

No, potted beef/potted hough is absolutely nothing like those vile little jars of Shipmans paste.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/10/2019 08:53

I think some people are being snobby about something that they don't even know what they are talking about. Even fresh bought potted meat is 90% meat or you can always make your own.

What the hell is a tomato sausages

Just a normal pork sausage with tomato puree in the mix. DPs favourite kind and you can get them in most supermarkets, butchers, Farm shops etc. I thought they were a common type of sausage but apparently not?

TheQueef · 10/10/2019 08:53

Potted chap (what we called pork head spread) is dangerous.
When I was a nipper I looked in the pan, full pig head with black crosses for eyes, bobbling up at me Shock made a clockwork Orange look like brer rabbit.
Scarey stuff.
Had toast and mucky dripping today....living my best life 💘

Potted heid is my favourite new year tradition.

Not being able to buy knap bones during the bse crisis was a major trauma of my over privileged childhood!

pinkdelight · 10/10/2019 09:36

I used to love sardine and tomato paste as a kid, but then I also enjoyed pilchards on toast, which would now make me boak. I think the turning point was when I mistakenly left a crab paste sandwich in a bag in the bottom of my wardrobe for a few weeks after a junior school trip. Not pleasant.

Still a fan of pate but not so much paste these days.

Busybusybust · 10/10/2019 09:38

Potted beef. Mmmmm you can’t beat it. But only the proper stuff as sold by bakeries in Yorkshire.

NoSauce · 10/10/2019 09:40

Even the name “potted meat” makes me queasy.

BobLobLawLLB · 10/10/2019 09:41

Dead animals on a cracker? no thanks!

UrsulaPandress · 10/10/2019 09:45

The butchers in town used to sell potted meat. It was lush. When I’d spent two weeks in hospital at the age of 13, all I wanted when I got home was potted meat and silver skin onions on de clercs oven bottom muffins.

I had two then promptly threw up.

AngelicInnocent · 10/10/2019 09:48

Potted meat and salt and vinegar crisps on a sandwich are amazing.

Also corned beef and Philadelphia sandwiches.

x2boys · 10/10/2019 10:07

I.always used to read about potted meat in Enid blyton books ,I used to.think they were those meat paste things ,but as they are a bit shite and far from delicious im thinking not?

TheQueef · 10/10/2019 10:15

No X2 those single slice meat paste jars (shiphams I'm looking at you) are ok but not the same.
Texture can vary but it's the meatyness and seasoning (fat) that makes it.
Think real butter vs margarine.
I get mine from the butchers still, I'm fairly sure it's Bingham though in a tray as opposed to a pot.

Good job we had this thread, so many of you missing out of conned by inferior meat spread Shock

Thanks Queef, we have really good market ( food hall ) near us I expect one of the meat stalls sell them .

CathyorClaire · 10/10/2019 10:39

Minced snouts and arseholes Grin

Dh and I always call sausages minced lips and balls. Can't say it puts me off them though Grin

I can get on board with potted meat although the rolls royce of potted meats is French Rillettes which I don't think is available here. I'm also partial to the odd fish paste sandwich. Amazing Grin

UrsulaPandress · 10/10/2019 12:22

Pecks Anchovette Paste is the king of fish pastes. It used to be available in Lewis's in Manchester but the EU stopped it being imported from South Africa because of some random ingredient.

I stock up whenever I am over there.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 10/10/2019 12:42

I LOVE potted heid. On toast with lashings of butter, or fresh crusty bread.

Also corned beef hash is the comfort food of the gods.

Not keen on fish paste, but then I'm not keen on fish generally.

zukiecat · 10/10/2019 12:50

Known as Potted Heid here

My granny used to give us that most Fridays when we were kids

Absolutely vile, disgusting stuff, only thing worse was her Fish Tatties, but that's another story

ScreamingValenta · 10/10/2019 12:53

YANBU. It's lovely.
