To declare Potted Meat underrated?

Nothing better on crackers with finely sliced raw onion 👄
Don't even mention warm on toast, I can't ever only have two slices.

What do you think is the most over looked/ underrated?

Ooh!! Love slice of Corned Beef👍 In a sandwich with thinly sliced onion and tomatoes, or with chips and beans😄 Quick cheap tea!
Also a fan of chicken and ham paste on crusty bread, and used to love Chicken and stuffing paste, but can’t find it anywhere lately😒 Can’t stand any fish pastes - far too “fishy” for me
And a shout-out for cheese spread and crusty bread or a couple of slice of Hovis and a bag of crisps... lovely quick lunch

PickAChew · 09/10/2019 20:18

It is lovely. M&S used to do little jars of potted chicken and potted salmon, which were lovely - I kept them on hand because they were easy to slather on some bread, straight from the cupboard, in case of the many power cuts we had where we used to live. Must check if they still do them, next time i visit.

I also love brawn. I used to occasionally treat myself to some from the Fenwick food hall before they ruined it.

TheRattleBag · 09/10/2019 20:19

Love potted meat. Definitely underrated. Used to have a lovely recipe but lost it. Might try the Hairy Bikers one mentioned upthread!

PickAChew · 09/10/2019 20:21

And I'm really pissed off that M&S have stopped putting Duck Rillettes out with their Christmas food. I'd make a batch of delia's cranberry and onion confit and have it with that and be very happy with my lunch, for several days.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 09/10/2019 20:24

If you mean meat paste YABVU, disgusting stuff!

Used to be a sandwich staple of my 70's childhood, only to be trumped by the horror that is fish paste.

One of my favorite ever colleagues used to eat fish paste sandwiches. He was such a great nurse, I forgave him but it was a close call🤣

TheQueef · 09/10/2019 20:25

I think corned beef is extortionate these days.
I used to buy a small tin to have sandwich lunch and add the rest to stew and dumplings for the extra seasoning and to boost the meat.
Now it's as cheap to buy braising steak.

I have found my tribe!!!

Love potted meat and adore corned beef. Corned beef sandwich with good brown bread, sliced. tomato and Branston pickle is a thing of beauty.

A tin of corned beef cut into crouton style slices and dipped in HP sauce is another personal favourite Smile

SilverySurfer · 09/10/2019 20:30

I love potted beef but only home made and currently use this recipe: www.waitrose.com/home/recipes/recipe_directory/p/potted_beef.html

iklboo · 09/10/2019 20:31

It's called L A pate in our house (Lips & Arseholes) Grin

UrkStarkadder · 09/10/2019 20:35

Christ, my DH loves this stuff. And as a pp said corned beef is ruddy extortionate these days. You can actually get it on the deli counter- has it become trendy like avocado and grey hair?

TheRattleBag · 09/10/2019 20:55

I'm now craving a potted dog sandwich. And I'm away from home so have no chance of getting any for at least 8 days!

GruciusMalfoy · 09/10/2019 21:08

I've never eaten it, it's not something we ever had in the house growing up. But I remember my grandmother on dad's side spreading this greige meat paste on sandwiches for him. I was never tempted!

Mollypolly2610 · 09/10/2019 22:27

Worked in butchers when I was young. We used to make it from a sheep’s head hence in Scotland called Potted Heid! Yuk!

yogafailure · 09/10/2019 22:32

My granny called it "potted heid" and that was enough to put me off. Back in the day poor farming families like her did make it from the head and gawd knows what else Not for me I'm afraid.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/10/2019 22:38

I love Binghams potted beef with loads of butter on a white bread bun or crusty bread.
I also love corned beef and a nice chutney.

cakeallday · 09/10/2019 22:39

Has no one mentioned Enid Blyton featuring it as a standard food (that I thought sounded exotic and tasty)? Are you all too young to have read her?! Grin

userxx · 09/10/2019 23:14

What the hell is a tomato sausages 😬

Willow2017 · 09/10/2019 23:33

If you mean meat paste YABVU, disgusting stuff!

No potted meat is not meat paste you get in little jars😀
It's fab.

SavetheMinden6 · 09/10/2019 23:36

Don't forget potted shrimps!

TeeniefaeTroon · 09/10/2019 23:39

@Mollypolly2610
I was going to say this, I know it as potted heid too 😁

SavetheMinden6 · 09/10/2019 23:39

A guy from a firm which I won't name once explained it to me. There are no regulations about the amount of meat that goes into pate. So a "duck pate" can be 1% duck meat. Meat paste has to be 50% of the relevant meat, but "potted meat" has to be 90%. It's top of the range stuff!

Mollypolly2610 · 10/10/2019 00:59

I actually had to boil the lambs head and then pick the bits out of it! The smell........could never eat it!

cwg1 · 10/10/2019 01:15

Also reminded of Enid Blyton when I saw the thread Grin I think we tried some of the Bingham's because of her - agree it's very different from meat paste.

Gingerkittykat · 10/10/2019 01:42

I love potted hough, which is like the Hairy Bikers recipe, except you don't blend it till smooth.

My DD is going through a phase of eating it right now, I buy it from the butcher and it is amazing. The shop bought ones from the supermarket are pretty rubbish. She has it on toast, but it is also amazing in a toastie.

My ex used to make amazing potted hough, all good ingredients but a lot of hassle. It's one of the few things I miss about him.
