Drinks with no sweeteners

Posting for traffic. Since the sugar tax it’s been hard to find drinks without sweeteners. All my favourites are ruined. Winter won’t be the same without a hot Ribena! Anyone know of anything I can buy? Struggling with HG and can’t keep water down but can keep other things down.

Waitrose do a lemonade which is sweetener free - it's the only one I've been able to find and I'm stocking up in case it disappears.

Sweeteners are on my boycott list along with palm oil.

FizzyIce · 09/10/2019 19:15

I absolutely hate the taste of sweeteners so feel your pain OP.
Even the ones that don’t say no added sugar still have the same horrible after taste as they’ve “improved” the flavour.
I buy the apple high juice squash from Tesco and that’s nice or I just drink orange juice .

AleFailTrail · 09/10/2019 19:24

My parter has a problem with Aspartame in that it makes him need to pee. A lot. At least twice an hour.

The sugar tax is just proof that politics rides the current in thing with no thought to the people it affects.

(Also gutted Irn Bru has gone shite since aspartame was added)

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 09/10/2019 19:25

Is there any Diet Coke/Coke Zero equivalents out there which doesn't have aspartame in?

LaPampa · 09/10/2019 19:27

I bought some ginger ale from m&s which said no added sugar. I thought that was great as I didn’t want a sweet drink. Gross. Took one sip and all I could taste was sweeteners. If I want a sugary drink, I want to buy one. If I don’t, I can drink water or tea etc. I’m sure sweeteners will be a problem health wise in due course.

eurochick · 09/10/2019 19:28

The posh cordial section of our local waitrose seems to expand on a weekly basis. I like their own brand elderflower but they also stock belvoir and bottle green, among others.

Mamalicious16 · 09/10/2019 19:33

"Sweeteners are on my boycott list along with palm oil."

Think they're going to be on mine too. Feel crap/ headachy after having artificial sweeteners.
I'm going to try the Stevia sweetener - see if that's any better.

Did I hear Australia banned some sweeteners? ( Goes off to Google)

Teddybear45 · 09/10/2019 19:34

The Vimto imported from the Middle East contains sugar as it’s used during Ramadan to boost energy. You can often find it in the international section at some supermarkets.

VirtualHamster · 09/10/2019 19:42

I take a trip to Waitrose from time to time as it's the only place to get sweetener free lemonade and cordial. Our branch is closing shortly, going to have to start doing an Ocado order every few months I think. Even they've sneaked sweetener into some of their hi juice though, the elderflower now has sweetener for example.

maxybrown · 09/10/2019 19:42

@Teddybear45 where where where please? No sweetener at all?

I can't stand the taste at all, tastes like pure poison to me. I don't want or need to drink fizzy drinks all the time but sometimes fancy one. Gutted about irn bru especially.

I drink appletiser and they also do some cans in Sainsbury's that are different flavours. We also buy rock cordial and sparkling water.

lonelyonee · 09/10/2019 19:46

OMG THIS!!! I am starting to get extremely annoyed that everything we buy now tastes "off".
Particularly hate that we don't have a choice with most drinks whether we would like sugar or not. Like we can't make our own decisions anymore?!
Dandelion and burdock is a personal nostalgic favourite but it's been ruined everywhere by becoming sugar free! Saw a pp mention one that isn't and I'm now going to be on the hunt for it!!!

I feel your pain op! Only thing that worked for me during my 1st trimester was full fat bitter lemon/ Fanta lemon (although they both may have sweeteners in as well as sugar 😩).

Teddybear45 · 09/10/2019 19:52

You can get at most Indo-Pakistani aimed cash and carries. And Sainsburys / Asda / Tesco during both Eids / ramadan in some areas. If you go to Bradford or Manchester it seems all the small newsagents stock the imported Vimto cordial!

Roselilly36 · 09/10/2019 19:53

It’s getting harder to buy products without these additives. sodastream classic diet cola is aspartame free. Tiseree syrup I think may still be free from artificial sweetener, other than the sugar free version of course, which I don’t like at all. Expensive but the Tiseree Passion Fruit version is worth every penny IMHO. Sugar tax not helping of course, thanks Jamie.

BuildBuildings · 09/10/2019 19:59

M and s do a nice cucumber and mint water without sweetener. I think there's a ginger one too. However they also do flavours or a range with sweetners so you have to check each bottle unfortunately. I love the cucumber one very refreshing.

feellikeanalien · 09/10/2019 20:15

AleFailTrail I wrote to Barrs to complain about the change in Irn Bru and they replied saying that tastes change and people no longer want so much sugar in their drinks. Obviously bullshit but I no longer buy it.

Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock is good but quite expensive. Rocks is also good but would agree with what a pp said that you should keep it in the fridge. I've had to throw out a couple of bottles.

Howdidido · 09/10/2019 20:40

Same problem. I think i posted exactly this about a year ago!
Rocks and Belvoir are good but expensive. Lime cordial too!
Sainsburys high juice (not the no added sugar one)
Watching for more suggestions!

maxybrown · 09/10/2019 20:50

@Teddybear45 drat I am.from.manchester but actually now live in a village in Devon so very little.chance I'd say Sad thank you though. I'd love a decent vimto

ratsnest · 09/10/2019 21:17

Talking of nostalgic drinks I'd bloody love a proper cream soda

BrightYellowDaffodil · 09/10/2019 21:39

Last time I checked, Rose's lime cordial was sweetener free.

I used to love the Waitrose lime cordial and then they shoved sweeteners into it - I don't care what they say about sweeteners tasting the same as sugar, the taste makes me feel sick for hours even - so that's bloody ruined. I'd be happy to pay more to have the choice of drinks without sweeteners in!

The other option is making your own - I've make elderflower cordial and it's quite easy. Then you can make it to whatever flavour and sweetness you like :)

BrightYellowDaffodil · 09/10/2019 21:40

Make your own Ribena: hedgecombers.com/blackcurrant-syrup-recipe-aka-make-your-own-ribena/

maxybrown · 09/10/2019 21:51

I can get elderflower cordial without sweeteners and blackcurrant no problem. But irn bru, vimto and some others you just can't recreate yourself

Thetiss · 09/10/2019 22:16

I bought the nicest squash ever the other day in Morrisons, it’s called Rocks. I got the orange one but they had a blackcurrant one too

Gingerkittykat · 10/10/2019 01:53

(Also gutted Irn Bru has gone shite since aspartame was added)

You need to join the plans to storm the factory to bring back the original recipe!

New Bru is disgusting, I would happily pay extra to cover the sugar tax for the original.

RainbowMum11 · 10/10/2019 02:21

Morrison's squash doesn't have sweeteners - the only brand I buy now.

cockcrowfarm · 10/10/2019 04:55

I don't live in the UK so I'm not sure if it has changed but ikea have a range of cordials that are very nice and reasonably price. They had a delicious rhubarb flavor but that has been stopped here. if your not close to a shop maybe you can order online.
