I’ve never known what I want to be ‘when I grow up’

Now I’m grown up and I still don’t know!

AIBU to ask you to tell me what your dream career is? (And hopefully inspire me!)

A forensic pathologist or a zoo keeper .
Always wanted to look after big cats

ElizaPancakes · 08/10/2019 10:31

I’d still like to be a ballerina, but I’m at least 6 stone too heavy and 20 years too past it!

More realistic would be a Lady of Leisure Wink

ElizaDee · 08/10/2019 10:36

I wanted to be a pathologist. Unfortunately, although my other subjects were bang on, it involved a lot of maths which I'm shit at.

If I had to choose a different career I'd like to be an interior designer or personal buyer or event planner. I'd be really good at those.

But really, if I had a real choice, I want to be a kept woman, sahm, and not go to work. I've been working for 25 years and am over it.

ElizaDee · 08/10/2019 10:39

Or an archaeologist.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 08/10/2019 10:43

I had it and it broke my heart.

Until recently I was a specialist nurse in a speciality I loved. I worked hard and did multiple additional qualifications to ‘work my way up’. The pressure of endless cuts to the service and the safety risks associated with doing so much more with so much less burnt me out. The stress was immense. I didn’t renew my PIN and whilst I miss some of the aspects of it, my mental health is improving my the day. I am not waking at night in a panicky sweat anymore.

Be careful what you wish for.

CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 08/10/2019 11:05

anything with horses

incontrolofmyownlife · 08/10/2019 11:09

I'd love to sell cakes/fudge/brownies/sweet treats online!

Love the thought of cooking my kitchen all day and packaging things up to send out Grin

In reality I can't see how I'd make enough to live so instead I've stayed with my job that I hate!

PapayaCoconut · 08/10/2019 11:12

Academic. Moral philosophy professor, like Chidi from the good place.

7Worfs · 08/10/2019 11:25

Chief Operations Officer, I like to get things done.

trixiebelden77 · 08/10/2019 11:25

Doctor.

Used to watch ER as a kid and imagine myself managing traumas....and now I do!

Highly recommend doing your dream job.

OnlyYellowRoses · 08/10/2019 11:31

Midwife. Always wanted to do that and got half way through training and then got pregnant myself so had to give up. That was 13 years ago and I'd still like to do it but I've got 4 children of my own now and am single parent so I don't think I could go back to uni and still have enough finances/childcare to support them. Maybe one day when they're older

thecatsthecats · 08/10/2019 12:15

@7Worfs

When I quit to become a writer, send me your CV.

(I'm proofing the last 10 chapters before submission, so you never know!)

TheJoxter · 08/10/2019 12:58

@OnlyYellowRoses I’d love to be a midwife but definitely wouldn’t be practical with young kids. Maybe I’ll consider it when they’re bigger

Well done and good luck, @thecatsthecats! That’s exciting :)

happypotamus · 08/10/2019 13:30

I am a paediatric nurse. It is the only job I have ever wanted since I was 3 years old. I still love my job some days, some days I hate it, it is ruining my mental health.
When I 'grow up' I want to be a librarian. Peace and quiet and books all day. There's not usually many people in my local library so it wouldn't be too 'peoply' (currently I am an introvert doing an extrovert's job that requires me to spend 13hrs a day around lots of people), no one would be dying, probably no one would get angry and start shouting and swearing, I wouldn't have to go to work on Christmas Day, sounds great! I wouldn't be surprised if someone who is a librarian turns up in a bit and posts about all the downsides to the job just like I was tempted to reply to the PP who wanted to be a nurse.

Greywalls12 · 08/10/2019 13:38

Doctor. I'm a nurse and fairly young so it's perfectly do-able.
Just wish i persued it before my nursing degree. No idea how I'll be able to afford the course fees! But I'm working on it.

Carrie7899 · 08/10/2019 13:40

Beachcomber

7Worfs · 08/10/2019 13:41

@thecatsthecats If that’s a genuine offer I’m taking you up on that!
I’m finding it hard to break into the Head of/Director layer.

NomDeQwerty · 08/10/2019 13:42

I saw a documentary about aircraft. A woman was being Paid Actual Money to go through the first class cabins and nitpick. I need that job. Also I'd be brilliant at it having gutted my way through the photos in the Buckingham Palace tour guide (shoddy lack of attention to detail if you ask me). Grin

NomDeQwerty · 08/10/2019 13:43

Tutted not gutted ffs
