As in people in places such as Richmond, Kingston (insisting they live in Surrey) or places such as Bromley (insisting they are in Kent).

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Is is snobbery? They usually drone only about postal towns which also no longer exist.

@GPatz, didn't realise the London numbers started at Ewell as use so few landlines now. I'd still have said that was Surrey. You definitely sound in Surrey now.

ilovetofu · 07/10/2019 08:25

Why do you care? Hmm

GPatz · 07/10/2019 08:26

@TomHagenMakesMyBosomTrembleomHagen Yes, we were surprised when we got it!

PancakeAndKeith · 07/10/2019 08:27

I used to live in Guildford. At no point ever did I think that was even vaguely London.

I love that some people are getting so irate about including counties in postal address. Every single form I fill out online has a space for county. It might not be needed but everyone still uses it.

Mitebiteatnite · 07/10/2019 08:27

I can see that I'm not alone in being annoyed by people who say 'I'm from Laaaandannnn' when actually they live in Bromley. But then I was born and bred in Zone 1, we considered zones 1-3 as London and 4 onwards were basically another country Blush

DappledThings · 07/10/2019 08:29

I don't, I put N/a if it's a free text box. If it's a drop down I put Kent and scowl at it.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 07/10/2019 08:30

@RoseQuartzGlow - I know someone who did that. She's an Effingham/Mole Valley girl & told all her uni friends she was from South London. Bit of a Hmm moment when a few of us pitched up to visit and it became very clear she was from Surrey. Not even the London borders.

bruffin · 07/10/2019 08:35

In have a post code that is considered London by insurance companies for some reason I dont live in London. The Greater London Border is about a mile away. I live in Herts.
Dd has travelled a bit and tends to tell people she is from London because nobody has heard if our town. In US she met a girl who also said she was from London, drilled down a bit and turned out she was originally from our town and knew many people in common. Also turned out to be related to my old childminder.

Well we live in Barnes which is London SW13. We’re 10-12 min walk to Hammersmith tube which is Zone 2. However, we are in the “London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames”. When I go into Richmond (15 min drive away) the town of Richmond itself is actually in Surrey. I would drive down the Lower Richmond Road through Sheen, but Sheen is SW14. So god knows where the official London / Surrey border is? It’s not as if there is one of those signs as Sheen becomes Richmond - “Welcome to Surrey.” Also, Richmond feels like London because it’s on the District Line.

So I guess what I’m saying is, perfectly possible for someone living in Richmond, Surrey (as it is generally known) to also describe themselves as living in London because they are, in fact, in the same London borough as me. The fact is they live in both.

RoseQuartzGlow · 07/10/2019 08:36

Is it snobbery @Tom? I don't really understand. I don't live in London myself so don't understand why someone would want to say they were living there if they weren't.

FastAway · 07/10/2019 08:38

In what way do people in Richmond borough also live in Surrey, other than it feels quite a lot like Surrey when you are there (which I agree it does).

FastAway · 07/10/2019 08:39

Surrey is a legal entity with legally defined boundaries. It doesn’t include Richmond.

formerbabe · 07/10/2019 08:42

Bromley is an interesting example be a it's a huge borough. You can be way out in the countryside and be in Bromley or also be right on the Lewisham/Bromley border and feel like you are very much in London.

Parisa5 · 07/10/2019 08:43

Fast - because Richmond is in Surrey. It’s known as Richmond, Surrey and is part of that county. But it’s also part of the London Borough which I live in.

formerbabe · 07/10/2019 08:44

*because

Parisa5 · 07/10/2019 08:46

Also, if you go over the bridge from Richmond you are suddenly in Twickenham, Middlesex. I have never understood Middlesex tbh, as it doesn’t even show on maps.

Parisa5 · 07/10/2019 08:52

Oh ok, just found this with a quick Google. It seems that Richmond has been officially classed as London since 1965! So there you go - every day is a school day. I wonder where the official Surrey border would be then? What about places like Petersham and Ham a bit further out down the river but on the Richmond side?

And what about Kingston? I guess that’s not Surrey either then as it’s the “London Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames?”

To be annoyed at people who live in a London Borough but insist they don't (i.e Im in Surrey, Kent etc)
FastAway · 07/10/2019 08:56

No, not at all. Richmond isn’t in Surrey. If you scroll down on this link there is a list of all the boroughs within Surrey, as controlled by Surrey CC. The town of Richmond isn’t in any of them, because Richmond isn’t in Surrey. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrey

Parisa5 · 07/10/2019 09:00

Yes but you can see why people would be confused because although Kingston is not listed there as a Surrey borough, it is stated as the “Admin HQ” of Surrey Confused

FastAway · 07/10/2019 09:05

Yes it’s confusing especially if you’ve been raised as I have to think of Kingston etc as Surrey! And of course they don’t feel in any way London. Colloquially everyone would know what you mean.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/10/2019 09:06

Richmond feels like London now. It’s not really the leafy distant outpost anymore. I live in West London and can get a tfl red bus to Richmond from where I live.

If Kew Gardens is regarded as being in London it’s pretty difficult to argue Richmond isn’t.

Rosehip10 · 07/10/2019 09:07

@magicpaintbrush

Oh so we are going on what some lifestyle magazine says now? The places you mention were in Kent but since 1965 have been in London.

OP posts:
Rosehip10 · 07/10/2019 09:09

@samcro

No it wasn't. It changed in 1965.

Parisa5 · 07/10/2019 09:11

It’s funny because when I occasionally go to the Kingston Bentall Centre, I always feel likeIn driving out into Surrey because I go down the A3. And I always thought Richmond was officially in Surrey, but in the part of Surrey that is also within Greater London. I’ve always just thought this Grin

So I guess Twickenham is still London as well then? And Heathrow airport?

Rosehip10 · 07/10/2019 09:12

@parisa5 the town of Richmond is in the London borough of Richmond, the same as Barnes, not surrey.
