To hate dressing up for Halloween?

PinkGlitter123 · 06/10/2019 18:15

Work always get us to do it and I hate the expense and feeling self conscious.
Will plain black jeans, a black top and black bat wings work or will I be accused of making no effort?

PinkGlitter123 · 06/10/2019 18:21

What about black top/trousers with cat ears headband and draw on whiskers and nose? Probably look a bit better than just wings

I love dressing up for halloween

PinkGlitter123 · 06/10/2019 18:27

I can't wear make up as have skin allergies,
I am very shy so hate doing stuff like this.

What did you do last year?

WaterSheep · 06/10/2019 18:30

If you work in a pre-school then I don't expect the costumes will need to be all singing / dancing, as they will need to be practical and not frightening.

What about something like this.

www.amazon.co.uk/BlessFashions-Halloween-Printed-T-Shirts-Skeleton/dp/B07HNQW7WL?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_2&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

CheeryB · 06/10/2019 18:31

I know several people who won't get involved in Halloween as they are staunch church members. I don't think anyone should be forced to dress up. I wouldn't.

GADA9215 · 06/10/2019 18:33

Do not do it if you don’t feel comfortable. I am like you and hate anything fancy dress.

GADA9215 · 06/10/2019 18:34

You can get Halloween t shirts etc. Not a costume but an idea and proably much cheaper!

PinkGlitter123 · 06/10/2019 18:34

I just end up feeling really self conscious and hate the expense.
Thanks for the idea, I may go for that or keep with the bat wings, add bat ears and wear all black.

I didn't work in this job last year and so haven't dressed up in years for Halloween

I hate costume dress. I have a hoodie with cat ears that says, 'I'm a cat' and wheel that out every year. Also have skin allergies and cannot use makeup.

icanhearapindrop · 06/10/2019 18:37

H&M do a really cheap black skeleton jumper, I think it’s about £7. Maybe that, just so you look like you’ve made an effort?

WaterSheep · 06/10/2019 18:39

It's your choice OP. However I think if you go for bat wings and ears they will get taken off throughout the day, and you will end up looking like you haven't dressed up. The idea of a jumper or T shirt would be better as you can reuse each year, it looks like you've joined in, and most importantly it's comfortable.

Windyone · 06/10/2019 18:43

Wear your normal clothes and when people ask “why haven’t you dressed up?” say “I have”. “I’ve come as a serial killer” Then give them a hard stare 😀

Doobydoo · 06/10/2019 18:44

I loathe all that stuff too. I am a nurse and work with people with learning disabilities. I compromise by wearing something I can take off quickly if I need to be serious happens..ie..for our fun dsy I had fairy wings and a wand....however I did misjudge size of wings and had to walk sidewsys through doors...so beware! Grin

thewayoftheplatypus · 06/10/2019 18:45

Second buying something now you can wear over and over. I have a pair of skeleton leggings I got in the sale around 7 years ago and wear them with a black tunic or dress every Halloween (sometimes with a skull headband/face paint depending on what we’re doing)

BlackCatSleeping · 06/10/2019 18:49

I’m doing the dressing all in black and adding cat ears and a tail thing this year. I think it’s fine.

TheSmallAssassin · 06/10/2019 18:53

Why does anyone think that a jumpsuit is practical? Have you never been to the loo in one?

PinkGlitter123 · 06/10/2019 18:55

I can't see why anyone would think bat wings and ears/dressing all in black is any better than wearing say a skeleton top. (In terms of effort)
Glad its not just me who hates it. The preschool only runs of a morning so not worried too much about practicalities of things being taken off

I hate these sort of things too. Where I work used to try and do this but so many people just ignored it that they gave up asking. Its a shit day for me anyway. My mum died on 31 October (not recently but still...). Obviously I realise no one would know this but I just wish people would have a bit more sensitivity when they are trying to enforce these "fun" occasions on other people.

cardibach · 06/10/2019 19:01

I absolutely refuse to do fancy dress in any circumstances. Stupid and often expensive and wasteful.

Sweetchicken · 06/10/2019 19:03

Just wear a really truly horrific mask, guaranteed to terrify the children, you'll be asked to remove it, then you can say at least you tried. 😂

icanhearapindrop · 06/10/2019 20:19

I wasn’t suggesting the skeleton top would look like you’ve made more of an effort than with the bat wings etc. I meant as opposed to not dressing up, and it was a cheap and easy idea. I think either would be fine, especially for a pre-school where you need to be comfortable.

20viona · 06/10/2019 20:21

Just get a headband with spiders or pumpkins on from Asda.
