Missing old Saturday nights in

Maybe just over 10 years ago, a Saturday night in would have included a trip to Blockbusters to spend half an hour trying to choose a film, then onto wherever to pick up a takeaway - sometimes if you had to wait you’d grab a quick beer or wine while waiting, then home to tuck in and watch.

Now it’s “oh it’s 7 o’clock, let’s order the food and pick a film . Appreciate it’s all easier but Aibu to miss those little trips.

You CAN still make the trips though...so YABU.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 05/10/2019 15:39

Well not to pick a video I can’t - you have a point with the takeaway though.

YANBU. These are the things that make memories. Saturday's used to be a drive into town; butcher's, baker's, wine shop, hire two films then back for a lunch of cheese, pate, bread and wine. Afternoon was a couple of hours in the garden, this time of year pulling weeds, pulling out end of season flowers, raking leaves. A walk round the woods, then back home to lay the fire. Jacket potato, pickles, finish the rest of the wine and rake the fire down before climbing up to bed.

Technology changed that, for sure. But kids, a business and a small-holding means those lazy days are long gone.

Though, I have just been in to the small independent cheese shop this afternoon! It was like a geography lesson "Epoisses....where is that?" then the owner explained about the Grubb family cheeses from Cashel.
Not quite Blockbusters, but a trip out.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 05/10/2019 15:47

I also had some of my finest ridiculous whispered disagreements with dh in video shops... I miss them.

I live quite rurally so while you can now get some takeaways delivered, the best Chinese near us doesn’t deliver, so one of still has to go out to collect our order. We do try to combine it with a drink at a nice country pub (take it in turns to drive) before we go and pick up though. I quite enjoy the ritual.

@ Nononononono33. That sounds lovely, perfect start to a Saturday evening.

Oh OP I have completely forgotten we used to do that. Nothing like the excitement of choosing a film in Blockbuster and then the crushing disappointment that the person before you hadn’t rewound the tape Grin

BettyFilous · 05/10/2019 16:08

The video shop which I frequented in the 90s with my student housemates had a porn cave (literally) at the back. We liked watching all the men sidling in there furtively.

StCharlotte · 05/10/2019 16:15

Blockbusters c.1986...

Best friend (quietly): Shall we watch Curly Killer?

Me (loudly): Curly Killer???

Best friend (hissing): Caligula!

Which was a very risque film at the time.

confusedandemployed · 05/10/2019 16:17

@BettyFilous did you go to uni in Cardiff?!

Danglingmod · 05/10/2019 16:21

We still go and fetch takeaways: all of ours deliver but you're waiting 45 mins + whereas if you collect, it's like 10!

I agree about the films, though. And I love the sound of Freshwater's "old" Saturdays.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 05/10/2019 16:24

I also think I used to watch a wider range of films when you couldn’t do a quick google of the reviews.

Yanbu,I miss Sunday evening Tv in the 80s ,Howard's way ,Tenko etc and the whole family watching TV together not upstairs / in different rooms on various devices Sad

WarshipWarrior · 05/10/2019 17:03

I got lost at jacket potatoes and pickles Wink not for me but sounds like an idyllic saturday though.

Yes my finest memories of the honeymoon period with my now DH involve blockbusters and a takeaway and loads of snacks. No wonder I now weigh 3 stone more than I used to. Will definitely go back to going to collect a takeaway though - I HATE waiting for a delivery but due to a toddler and timings etc we usually end up just ordered for delivery and you're right it's not as nice/usually cold when it turns up.

Barchester · 05/10/2019 17:07

Dear Freshwater Bay please can you let me know the technology that now pulls weeds, pulls out end of season flowers and rakes leaves. I haven't come across it yet and would love to do so!

FeckOffGraham · 05/10/2019 17:09

Our local selection of takeaways is piss poor, so we almost always go and collect it. I don't miss video shops. They were always a bit weird imo.

Anyway, I'm watching strictly tonight - no shame! ok, a little shame Blush.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 05/10/2019 19:28

Well we tried to recreate things by going to Sainsbury’s and browsing the dvd collection - it really wasn’t the same Smile

It's all fun and games until Sunday night comes, you're all settled in then you remember it was a one night only rental and you then had to prize your arse off the sofa to return it or pay the fine.
