How much is too much

Primary school homework.

DD works hard at school and is doing well. However now in year 5 she gets 3 pieces of homework, plus spellings, plus reading to do every week.

With after school clubs twice a week it’s a lot to fit in and it’s taking over our weekends. Is it really necessary? Do your children get this much?

Sounds about right

How long does it take?

My 8 year old has at least an hour a night every day and I do feel that is too much.

20-30 minutes a day isnt excessively i think

Our primary school has been great I think.
Reading every night and maybe ten minutes or so of something once a week up till about year 4.
Year 4 - reading every night plus about 45 mins per week.
Year 5 and 6 so far - carry on reading plus about 1.5 hours per week.
Excellent school, excellent results, kids thriving.

Reading is fine as we’ve done that at bedtime daily since forever. Even spellings which she’s fine with. It’s the maths, English and ‘other’ which takes all the time. I reckon anywhere between 20-60 mins for each, depending on whats involved.

I understand the importance of homework, I guess it just feels like a lot when you’re trying to do other things too.
